[Termes IGN] système de gestion de bases de données relationnellesRésumé : (auteur) Planners and geospatial analysts have long been using GIS and optimization methods to solve a wide range of spatial decision problems from routing and facility location to political redistricting. However, there has been a notable disconnection between the tools of GIS and optimization, constraining the capability of spatial decision-making in GIS. This article presents relational linear programming (RELP), a new framework and tool for bridging the gap between the two fields by integrating a generic optimization solver into GIS: a solver for integer linear programming (ILP). In particular, we choose relational/spatial databases as the GIS platform. We demonstrate that not only data, but also programs for spatial problems (in the form of ILP) can be managed and executed in SQL inside spatial databases. The main focus of this article is on location modeling, and we show how classic models can be formulated succinctly in a declarative way using SQL. The declarative approach of RELP allows researchers to focus on formulating new spatial decision problems without being bogged down in sophisticated programming. The integrated approach allows data processing and decision-making in one language. Therefore, it brings the power of location modeling to non-specialist GIS practitioners. [Termes IGN] SingapourRésumé : (auteur) Identifying meaningful locations, such as home or work, from human mobility data has become an increasingly common prerequisite for geographic research. Although location-based services (LBS) and other mobile technology have rapidly grown in recent years, it can be challenging to infer meaningful places from such data, which – compared to conventional datasets – can be devoid of context. Existing approaches are often developed ad-hoc and can lack transparency and reproducibility. To address this, we introduce an R package for inferring home locations from LBS data. The package implements pre-existing algorithms and provides building blocks to make writing algorithmic ‘recipes’ more convenient. We evaluate this approach by analyzing a de-identified LBS dataset from Singapore that aims to balance ethics and privacy with the research goal of identifying meaningful locations. We show that ensemble approaches, combining multiple algorithms, can be especially valuable in this regard as the resulting patterns of inferred home locations closely correlate with the distribution of residential population. We hope this package, and others like it, will contribute to an increase in use and sharing of comparable algorithms, research code and data. This will increase transparency and reproducibility in mobility analyses and further the ongoing discourse around ethical big data research. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Change detection within unequally spaced and non-stationary time series is crucial in various applications, such as environmental monitoring and satellite navigation. The jumps upon spectrum and trend (JUST) is developed to detect potential jumps within the trend component of time series segments. JUST can simultaneously estimate the trend and seasonal components of any equally or unequally spaced time series by considering the observational uncertainties or measurement errors. JUST and its modules can also be applied to monitor vegetation time series in near-real-time. Herein, the details of the open-source software package for JUST, developed in both MATLAB and Python, are presented. [Termes IGN] Python (langage de programmation)Résumé : (auteur) Landscapes evolve due to climatic conditions, tectonic activity, geological features, biological activity, and sedimentary dynamics. Geological processes at depth ultimately control and are linked to the resulting surface features. Large regions in Australia, West Africa, India, and China are blanketed by cover (intensely weathered surface material and/or later sediment deposition, both up to hundreds of metres thick). Mineral exploration through cover poses a significant technological challenge worldwide. Classifying and understanding landscape types and their variability is of key importance for mineral exploration in covered regions. Landscape variability expresses how near-surface geochemistry is linked to underlying lithologies. Therefore, landscape variability mapping should inform surface geochemical sampling strategies for mineral exploration. Advances in satellite imaging and computing power have enabled the creation of large geospatial data sets, the sheer size of which necessitates automated processing. In this study, we describe a methodology to enable the automated mapping of landscape pattern domains using machine learning (ML) algorithms. From a freely available digital elevation model, derived data, and sample landclass boundaries provided by domain experts, our algorithm produces a dense map of the model region in Western Australia. Both random forest and support vector machine classification achieve approximately 98% classification accuracy with a reasonable runtime of 48 minutes on a single Intel® Core™ i7-8550U CPU core. We discuss computational resources and study the effect of grid resolution. Larger tiles result in a more contiguous map, whereas smaller tiles result in a more detailed and, at some point, noisy map. Diversity and distribution of landscapes mapped in this study support previous results. In addition, our results are consistent with the geological trends and main basement features in the region. Mapping landscape variability at a large scale can be used globally as a fundamental tool for guiding more efficient mineral exploration programs in regions under cover. [Termes IGN] R (langage)Résumé : (auteur) The availability of advanced Machine Learning algorithms has made the estimation process of biophysical parameters more efficient. However, the efficiency of those methods seldom compared with the efficiency of already established semi-empirical procedures. Aboveground biomass (AGB) of mangrove forests is a crucial biophysical parameter as it is positively correlated to the carbon stocks and fluxes. The free availability of Sentinel-1 C-band SAR data and machine learning algorithms hold promises in estimating AGB of tropical mangrove forests. We reported high AGB (70 t/ha to 666 t/ha) using 185 field quadrats of 0.04ha each from Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the eastern Indian coast that could be attributed to species composition. The AGB maps generated using Interferometric Water Cloud Model (IWCM) and Deep Learning models were different from each other as they rely on different variables. IWCM was more dependent, especially on ground and vegetation components of coherence, while canopy height acted as the most crucial variable in the Deep Learning model. However, the negligible variations in Deep Learning-based AGB maps can be attributed to interpreting the importance of coherence and VH backscatter. Due to low canopy penetration power of C-band SAR, high temporal decorrelation resulting from longer time gap between interferometric image pairs, and high spatial heterogeneity of mangrove forests, IWCM found as an unsuitable method for AGB estimation. Interestingly, a Deep Learning algorithm could translate the exact relationship between predictor variables and mangrove AGB in Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary. The AGB estimation studies in mangrove forests using Sentinel data should focus more on using machine learning algorithms like Deep Learning rather than semi-empirical models.
