[Termes IGN] satellite agileRésumé : (Auteur) The Pleiades-HR system, of which the first platform of the constellation shall be ready for launch by early 2009, is the next generation of high resolution optical sensor satellites developed by CNES, the French space agency. With its ability to provide photogrammetrists with instantaneous colour image stereo-pairs of 20km swath and 70cm resolution acquired with B/H ratios ranging from 0.15 to 2, the very agile and precisely pointing Pleiades platforms should open in many countries a new era for the updating of high scale maps, by probably avoiding heavy aerial survey campaigns in many cases. In the framework of a cooperation agreement between CNES and IGN-France, designed to prepare an operational use of these images, several experimentations and simulations are being carried out, in order to verify the ability of the system to fulfil the technical and operational requirements of the map-making processes, in comparison with those presently based on digital aerial photography. Among others, present studies particularly focus on : 1- the geometric and radiometric quality assessment of the planned system products (sensor level, orthoimages and mosaics) ; 2- the capacity assessment of the Pleiades-HR constellation to meet the IGN-F cartographic mission needs in terms of image volume for the coverage of the national territory, whether in monoscopic or stereoscopic mode. After an overview of the main characteristics of the Pleiades-HR system, the paper aims at presenting the first results of these studies, which will be of great importance, together with the economic side, in the decision process of IGN-France to transfer, or not, part of the supplying of fresh images from the aerial source to the satellite source. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Pleiades is the highest resolution civilian earth observing system ever developed in Europe. This imagery program is conducted by the French National Space Agency, CNES. It will operate in 2009-2010 two agile satellites designed to provide optical images to civilian and defense users. Images will be simultaneously acquired in Panchromatic (PA) and multispectral (XS) mode, which allows, in Nadir acquisition condition, to deliver 20 km wide, false or natural colored scenes with a 70 cm ground sampling distance after PA+XS fusion. Imaging capabilities have been highly optimized in order to acquire along-track stereo pairs and triplets, multi-targets and mosaics. The automatic orthomosaic product is the most ambitious innovation of the PHR ground image processing. Starting from an overview of the system characteristics enabling acquisition suitable for mosaic, this paper presents the geometric, radiometric and topological issues of the automatic ortho-mosaic and then focuses on the processing flow. It details the different steps: strategy, bundle adjustment, DEM refining, radiometric adjustment, seam line computation, a helped and quick image quality check and finally mosaic rectification. The process capabilities are illustrated with different sensor images. And finally the ortho-mosaic product content is described. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) The noise spectrum in DORIS ground-station motion is investigated by means of the Allan variance method applied to the decomposition of the 3D signal into its principal components in the time domain. Sets of weekly position time-series from 1994 to 2005 derived by three IDS Analysis Centres (IGN-JPL, INASAN, and LEGOS-CLS) for 119 stations at 69 sites are considered. The observing satellites are SPOT-2, SPOT-3, SPOT-4, and SPOT-5, TOPEX/Poseidon, and ENVISAT. Annual and semi-annual perturbations, as well as the 117.3-day term associated with the TOPEX/Poseidon orbit, are found at most stations. Their amplitudes reach up to 19.3, 23.7, and 13.3 mm, respectively, for the three analysis centres (ACs). When corrected for these components and a linear drift, the time-series dominantly show white noise (WN) at the 10-45mm level the noise level is the highest in the East direction, probably in connection with the high orbit inclinations. The noise level is minimum for the high latitude stations, mostly and intensively observed by the SPOT satellites, and the determination of the noise type is unclear; longer observation spans would be needed to decide between interannual variations and flicker noise. The improvement in positioning due to the DORIS constellation extension from three to five satellites in 2002, and the network rejuvenation program initiated in 2000, results in a decrease of the noise level by a factor of 1.7 in a WN context, both before and after the changes. One example of the benefit of studying the signal in the time eigenspace domain is the detection of anomalously large WN in the East direction for station HBKB (Hartebeesthoek, Africa) that masks the above-mentioned improvement. Studying the projection on the local frame of the second and third time-eigenspace components, a noise excess is detected in the North direction for some of the ACs. Station stability derived from our time-series analysis confirms, in general, the expected performance based on the careful technical review of the station components (antenna, pillar, etc.). The respective merits of our noise qualification method, based on direct time-series analysis in the time-eigenspace domain without any a priori statistical model, in comparison with other methods, such as the selection of a mixed-noise model by maximum likelihood estimation, are discussed. The Landsat system has contributed significantly to the understanding of the Earth’s environment, spawned revolutionary uses of spacebased data by the commercial value-added industry, and encouraged a new generation of commercial satellites that provide regional, high-resolution spatial images. This PE&RS Special Issue provides an update to the 1997 25th Landsat anniversary issue, particularly focused on the contribution of Landsat-7 to the 34+ year history of the Landsat mission. In this overview paper, we place the Landsat-7 system in context and show how mission operations have changed over time, increasingly exploiting the global monitoring capabilities of the Landsat observatory. Although considerable progress was made during the Landsat-7 era, there is much yet to learn about the historical record of Landsat global coverage: a truly valuable national treasure. The time to do so is now, as the memories of the early days of this historic program are fading as we speak. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the influence that certain omission and commission errors can have on the gravity field models estimated from the initial release of data (RL01) from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission. The effects of omission errors were analyzed by limiting the degree and order to which the GPS and K-band range-rate (KBR) measurement partials were extended in the solution process. The commission error studies focused on the impact of an imperfect mean reference gravity field model on the solution. Combinations of both of these error sources were also explored. The nature of these errors makes them difficult to distinguish from the true gravity signal, so the exploration of these error sources was performed using simulations; however, comparisons to real-data solutions are provided. The results show how each of the specific error sources investigated influences the gravity field solution. The simulations also show how all of the errors examined can be sufficiently mitigated through the appropriate choice of processing parameters.
