[Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) represents a rather innovative, quick, and low-cost methodological approach offering applications in several fields of investigation. The present study illustrates the developed method using Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on UAV-derived data for evaluating short-term morphological-topographic changes of the beach system and related implications for coastal vulnerability assessment. UAV surveys were performed during the summers of 2019 and 2020 along a beach stretch affected by erosion, located along the central Adriatic coast. Acquired high-resolution aerial photos were used to generate large-scale DEMs as well as orthophotos of the beach using the Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing tool. Comparison of the generated 2019 and 2020 DEMs highlighted significant morphological changes and a sediment volume loss of about 780 m3 within a surface area of about 4400 m2. Based on 20 m spaced beach profiles derived from the DEMs, a coastal vulnerability assessment was performed using the CVA approach that highlighted some significant variations in the CVA index between 2019 and 2020. Results evidence that UAV surveys provide high-resolution topographic data, suitable for specific beach monitoring activities and the updating of some parameters that enter in the CVA model contributing to its correct application. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal artificielRésumé : (auteur) Recent optical remote sensing satellite missions, such as Sentinel-2 with the MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) onboard, allow the estimation of coastal water key parameters with very high spatial resolutions (down to 10 m). In this article, multiple approaches are proposed for retrieving chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coasts in Italy, using both empirical and model-based frameworks to design regressive and neural network (NN) estimation methods. The latter proves to be more accurate on a regional scale, where standard ocean color physical models exhibit high uncertainty in their local parameterization due to the complex spectral characteristics of the observed scene. Retrieval results are encouraging for Chl-a with a coefficient of determination R2 up to 0.72 with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.33 mg m−3 , using an empirical NN. The TSM algorithms exhibit higher uncertainty, mainly due to scarcity of in situ measurements and model parameterizations, with R2=0.52 and RMSE = 1.95 g/m 3 using NNs. The bio-optical model, used for the development of model-based algorithms, shows some inadequacies in representing the inherent and apparent optical properties for the case study areas, especially considering the different spectral features between the oligotrophic Tyrrhenian Sea and the eutrophic Adriatic Sea. This study confirms the potential of Sentinel-2 MSI products for coastal water monitoring, but it also highlights key issues to be further tackled such as the atmospheric correction impact, the need of reliable in situ measurements, and possible bathymetry effects near the shores. We analyse the creation and production of British charts of the Adriatic from the first charting campaign of the Hydrographic Office of 1800–1801 to charts produced in the period of British rule over the island of Lissa of 1811–1815 to the first systematic hydrographic surveying of the Adriatic of 1817–1819 under the leadership of William Henry Smyth that resulted in the first hydrographic atlas and pilot book of the Adriatic. At the same time, the paper evaluates the British contribution to the creation of some of the first reliable nautical charts of the Adriatic and to the development of the nautical cartography of the Adriatic in general. [Termes IGN] radianceRésumé : (Auteur) An operational system for autonomous above-water radiance measurements, called the SeaWiFS Photometer Revision for Incident Surface Measurements (SeaPRISM), was deployed at the Acqua Alta Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea and used for the validation of remote sensing radiometric products in coastal waters. The SeaPRISM data were compared with simultaneous data collected from an independent in-water system for a wide variety of sun elevations along with different atmospheric, seawater, and sea state conditions. The average absolute differences between the above- and in-water determinations of water-leaving radiances (computed linearly) were less than 4.5% in the 412-555-nm spectral interval. A similar comparison for normalized water-leaving radiances showed average absolute differences less than 5.1%. The comparison between normalized water-leaving radiances computed from remote sensing and SeaPRISM matchup data, showed absolute spectral average (linear) differences of 17.0%, 22.1%, and 20.8% for SeaWiFS, MODIS, and MERIS, respectively. The results, in keeping with those produced by independent in-water systems, suggest the feasibility of operational coastal networks of autonomous above-water radiometers deployed on fixed platforms (towers, lighthouses, navigation aids, etc.) to support ocean color validation activities. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (Auteur) The eathquake activity around the Aegean Sea is the most conspicuous geodynamic phenomenon in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The clearest seismicity feature is associated with the Hellenic are forming a semi-circle from the Ionian Islands to Western Anatolia. The right-lateral Kefalonia Fault Zone (KFZ) dominates the seismic activity in the Ionian Sea. Previous GPS measurements have revealed distinct crustal motion of the Central Ionian Islands and SVV Greece in a SW direction relative to SE Italy. The trajectories constructed from repeated observations lead us to interpret the KFZ as part of the boundary zone separating the stable Apulian/Adriatic block from the Aegean/Anatolian region, which is rapidly moving towards the Southwest. In 1995 the progress made in GPS and Computer technology made it, realistic to consider a relative dense continuous GPS (CGPS) network which would bridge the main tectonic units and provide a high temporal resolution of crustal motion. In order to monitor the deformation and evaluate the strain field in the area, we established a network of continuous GPS stations across the KFZ. The first sites were monumented during Spring 1995, and the network was gradually augmented with new stations. It was considered as fully operational by the beginning of 1996. In addition to our own network, data of four surrounding IGS sites (Graz, Matera, Noto and Ankara) were introduced in the processing. The main results are daily Solutions, which can be used to derive time series and rates of crustal motion. A detailed behavior of the different sites during the period 1.995 to 1998 is presented in terms of N-S. E-W and Up components. Clearly non-tectonic discontinuities due to hardware changes were estimated and corrected, increasing the consistency of the Solution. The use ofa common-mode filtering technique reduced the scatter of the time series by a factor of about 2. Following the calculation of the time series, we have determined the rates and trajectories of crustal motion. These data provide a better overview of the kinematic processes across the KFZ. The sites to the north of the KFZ show almost no motion relative to Eurasia, while an increase of rates up to 30±2mm/a is clearly seen when moving to the southern Ionian Islands. The inter-seismic motion of the Aegean block was interrupted by the Strofades earthquake (Ms 6.1, Nov. 18. 1997). which was associated with a distinct south- oriented co-seismic slip of 12 cm and an uplift of about 10 cm. The time series analysis clearly reveals that also the island of Zakinthos was affected by this event (co-seismic slip of 1.5 cm to the south). The deformation rates are evaluated by means of strain analysis, using the collocation method. The resulting strain rates depend strongly on the correlation length chosen.
