Watering of the tree has limited influence in time on the RCS, i.e., limited to around 30 min, but impacts the coherence over a longer period of time. Analysis of the series shows that according to the season considered, clear daily cycles from 1 to 2 dB may appear on the coherence only (autumn) or on both coherence and RCS (spring), whereas in winter, they are absent on both results. It was analyzed in the literature that the variations in RCS are strongly correlated to the variations in the dielectric constant in trunks and branches. In addition, it was shown that the HV RCS presents seasonal trends with a yearly cycle of roughly 3 dB following similar trends reported for trunk moisture content time series. [Termes IGN] radiomètre à hyperfréquenceRésumé : (auteur) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) mission, which was launched on January 31, 2015, is providing global measurements of soil moisture and freeze/thaw state. The SMAP radiometer operates within the protected Earth Exploration Satellite Service passive frequency allocation of 1400-1427 MHz. However, unauthorized in-band transmitters and out-of-band emissions from transmitters operating at frequencies adjacent to this allocated spectrum are known to cause interference to microwave radiometry in this band. Because measurement corruption by these terrestrial transmissions, which is referred to as radio-frequency interference (RFI), threatens mission success, the SMAP radiometer includes special flight hardware to enable the detection and filtering of RFI. Results from the first year of SMAP data show the presence of RFI with frequent occurrence over Asia and Europe. During the calibration/validation stage of the mission, the RFI detection and mitigation algorithms were modified to provide enhanced performance. Analysis of the L1B_TB products indicates good algorithmic performance with respect to RFI detection and removal. However, some regions of the globe (e.g., Japan) continue to experience complete data loss. This paper summarizes updates to the SMAP RFI processing algorithms based on prelaunch tests and on-orbit measurements, as well as RFI information obtained in SMAP's first year on orbit. [Termes IGN] signal GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) GNSS Reflectometry, Scatterometry and Radio Occultation aboard ISS is the mission concept under study within the European Space Agency. Its core payload consists of an interferometric GNSS-Reflectometry ocean altimeter/scatterometer which does not need to generate any clean replicas of the GNSS codes for its operation. This paper describes a new interferometric technique by which such payload could also perform radio occultation as an add-on, without requiring any additional hardware resources, like the generation of clean code replicas or a storage of them. Two possibilities are studied. The first one consists of performing the complex autocorrelation function of the received signal transmitted by a rising or setting GNSS satellite. The autocorrelation function is evaluated around time epochs that are multiples of the period of suitable codes found in the modulation of the navigation signals. Satellite discrimination has to be performed spatially, through the antenna pattern. The second possibility consists in acquiring the reference signal separately from the occultation event which, in turn, has two options depending upon the geometry at which the reference is recorded: zenithal and top of the atmosphere. The signal-to-noise ratio, the satellite discrimination, and the impact of clock errors are assessed. [Termes IGN] rayonnement électromagnétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) We report an initial investigation of the new location method of a very high frequency (VHF) radiation source, using signals recorded at the International Space Station. A VHF interferometer (VITF) has two VHF sensors. Locating lightning with VHF bands is useful to locate the position of the charge distribution in the thunderstorm. The location method of a radio source proposed used two direction-of-arrival estimation techniques. One is the interferometric technique, and another is based on the ionospheric propagation delay measurement of received signals. The combination of the two techniques provides two angular positions of the radiation source. When an altitude of a radiation source is assumed, we can determine two possible positions. One of the two positions was associated with the radiation source, while the other was not. In this paper, we compared the position of lightning and sprite imager (LSI) data, which are simultaneously captured during a lightning emission, with the locating position near the emission. The data set of the VITF within 100 ms of the optical lightning emission captured with the LSI was used. The temporally simultaneous event seems to be associated with the same lightning event. The estimated radiation positions were spatially in close agreement with the optical lightning positions captured with LSI, under nighttime ionosphere conditions. From statistical analysis, the spatial difference of the standard deviation changed from 15.3 to 30.8 km depending on the installation direction of the VHF sensors. The usefulness and limitations of the method are also discussed. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing radar satellites cover wide areas and provide spatially dense measurements, with millions of scatterers. Knowledge of the precise position of each radar scatterer is essential to identify the corresponding object and interpret the estimated deformation. The absolute position accuracy of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) scatterers in a 2D radar coordinate system, after compensating for atmosphere and tidal effects, is in the order of centimeters for TerraSAR-X (TSX) spotlight images. However, the absolute positioning in 3D and its quality description are not well known. Here, we exploit time-series interferometric SAR to enhance the positioning capability in three dimensions. The 3D positioning precision is parameterized by a variance–covariance matrix and visualized as an error ellipsoid centered at the estimated position. The intersection of the error ellipsoid with objects in the field is exploited to link radar scatterers to real-world objects. We demonstrate the estimation of scatterer position and its quality using 20 months of TSX stripmap acquisitions over Delft, the Netherlands. Using trihedral corner reflectors (CR) for validation, the accuracy of absolute positioning in 2D is about 7 cm. In 3D, an absolute accuracy of up to ∼66 cm is realized, with a cigar-shaped error ellipsoid having centimeter precision in azimuth and range dimensions, and elongated in cross-range dimension with a precision in the order of meters (the ratio of the ellipsoid axis lengths is 1/3/213, respectively). The CR absolute 3D position, along with the associated error ellipsoid, is found to be accurate and agree with the ground truth position at a 99% confidence level. For other non-CR coherent scatterers, the error ellipsoid concept is validated using 3D building models. In both cases, the error ellipsoid not only serves as a quality descriptor, but can also help to associate radar scatterers to real-world objects.
