The units measure the antenna temperature, which contributes to the average brightness temperature level of SMOS retrievals. We assess the radiometric resolution of the receivers, the similarity between their measurements, and their thermal stability. For these purposes, we use SMOS measurement data gathered during the first year of the orbital operations of the satellite, which was launched in November 2009. The main results from the analysis are that the units meet the design requirements with a margin. Also, we present a new thermal model for the radiometers to further enhance their stability. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes several sensitivity studies carried out with the French global 4-D-Var system to check its ability to assimilate surface-sensitive observations over land from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I). As well as a sound knowledge of land-surface parameters, the assimilation of SSM/I observations requires effective rain-detection and bias-correction algorithms. Three sensitivity components are hence analyzed with a special emphasis on the land-surface emissivity at SSM/I frequencies estimated from satellite observations. Several rain algorithms were tested to reject cloudy/rainy observations over land, and the bias-correction scheme was adapted to improve its performance over land and sea surfaces. Once these problems have been outlined, a global 4-D-Var assimilation experiment which assimilates SSM/I observations over land surfaces was run and compared with a control experiment. The impact on forecast scores has been found to be globally positive. Nevertheless, the very high sensitivity of SSM/I to each of the three components presented in this study is characterized by opposite effects that, once clustered together, lead to some residual biases over land due to their combined effects. [Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) The Advanced Land Observing Satellite [(ALOS); nicknamed ldquoDaichirdquo] was successfully launched on January 24, 2006, and it continues to work very well. This paper describes the calibrations of two optical instruments onboard ALOS, which are the Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping (PRISM) and Advanced Visible and Near-Infrared Radiometer type 2 (AVNIR-2). PRISM consists of three panchromatic radiometers and is used to derive a digital surface model (DSM) with high spatial resolution, which is an objective of the ALOS mission. AVNIR-2 has four radiometric bands from blue to near infrared, which are used for investigating regional environment issues such as land-use and land-cover classifications, and disaster monitoring. In this paper, we introduce the calibration and validation plan, methodologies, accuracy assessments of the standard products, image quality evaluations for PRISM and AVNIR-2, and their results. Geometric calibration is important in generating a precise DSM by a stereo pair image of PRISM. The relative geometric calibrations of both PRISM and AVNIR-2 are conducted by evaluating accuracies within one scene and evaluating sensor alignments as absolute calibration. For absolute geometric accuracies, we achieved 8.1 m for nadir-looking images and 9.3 m for forward- and backward-looking images of PRISM; we also achieved 114.2 m for AVNIR-2. PRISM is also radiometrically calibrated both relatively and absolutely. PRISM relative radiometric calibration is accomplished by using acquired images over homogeneous targets, such as oceans, deserts, ice, and snow areas, as well as nighttime observation. Simultaneously observed images with calibrated AVNIR-2 are used for absolute radiometric calibration by cross-calibration. The absolute radiometric accuracy of the PRISM nadir-looking radiometer is similar to that of AVNIR-2. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) A global and consistent characterization of land use and land change in urban and suburban environments is crucial for many fundamental social and natural science studies and applications. Presented here is a dense sampling method (DSM) that uses satellite scatterometer data to delineate urban and intraurban areas at a posting scale of about 1 km. DSM results are analyzed together with information on population and housing censuses, with Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) imagery, and with Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) night-light data. The analyses include Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix in the United States, Bogotá in Colombia, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Guangzhou in China, and Quito in Ecuador. Results show that scatterometer signatures correspond to buildings and infrastructures in urban and suburban environments. City extents detected by scatterometer data are significantly smaller than city light extents, but not all urban areas are detectable by the current SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite. Core commercial and industrial areas with high buildings and large factories are identified as high-backscatter centers. Data from DSM backscatter and DMSP nighttime lights have a good correlation with population density. However, the correlation relations from the two satellite datasets are different for different cities indicating that they contain complementary information. Together with night-light and census data, DSM and satellite scatterometer data provide new observations to study global urban and suburban environments and their changes. Furthermore, the capability of DSM to identify hydrological channels on the Greenland ice sheet and ecological biomes in central Africa demonstrates that DSM can be used to observe persistent structures in natural environments at a km scale, providing contemporaneous data to study human impacts beyond urban and suburban areas.
