[Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) The current Thematic Mapper (TM) class of Landsat sensors began with Landsat-4, which was launched in 1982. This series continued with the nearly identical sensor on Landsat-5, launched in 1984. The final sensor in the series was the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), which was carried into orbit in 1999. Varying degrees of effort have been devoted to the characterization of these instruments and data over the past 22 years. Extensive short-lived efforts early in the history, very limited efforts in the middle years, and now a systematic program for continuing characterization of all three systems are apparent. Currently, both the Landsat-5 TM and the Landsat-7 ETM+ are operational and providing data. Despite 20+ years of operation, the TM on Landsat-5 is fully functional, although downlinks for the data are limited. Landsat-7 ETM+ experienced a failure of its Scan Line Corrector mechanism in May 2003. Although there are gaps in the data coverage, the data remain of equivalent quality to prefailure data. Data products have been developed to fill these gaps using other ETM+ scenes. [Termes IGN] sol nuRésumé : (Auteur) In anticipation of X-band polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from future sensors, we investigated the potential of X-band fully polarimetric data for discriminating between the principal classes present in a study site near Avignon, France. Decomposition and analysis techniques have been applied to a dataset acquired by the ONERA airborne RAMSES (Radar Aéroporté Multi-Spectral d'Etude des Signatures) SAR. Results show that X-band provides some discrimination capability. The polarimetric parameters, entropy and Ü-angle, show clearly that these signature classes are grouped into five clusters corresponding to physical scattering characteristics. The introduction of the anisotropy parameter does not increase our ability to distinguish between different classes whose clusters are in the same entropy/Ü-angle zone. The correlation observed between the radar signal and the surface roughness over bare soils is very low. [Termes IGN] spectre électromagnétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A massive forest fire in Indonesia in 1997 affected the whole Asian region by producing a large smoke plume, with Malaysia bearing the brunt due to the wind direction and weather conditions and because of its proximity to the source. The five primary fire produced pollutants were carbon monoxide (C0), sulphur dioxide (S02), nitrogen dioxide (N02), ozone (03) and particulate matter less than 10 um (PM10). The first four of these are, of course, invisible to conventional satellite-flown multispectral scanners operating in the visible and near infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The fifth PM10, is present in the haze and therefore makes an observable contribution to the signal received by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The haze in AVHIRR channels 1 and 2 data for the fires of September 1997 has been used to study the concentration of PM10 directly. It has also been used to study the concentration indirectly-as a tracer or surrogate-for the four remaining materials, the gases CO, S02, N02 and 03). Data from ground observations have been used to calibrate the results and the distributions of the fire pollutants over Peninsular Malaysia have been plotted. [Termes IGN] Soil Moisture ExperimentRésumé : (Auteur) Watershed scale soil moisture estimates are necessary to validate current remote sensing products, such as those from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR). Unfortunately, remote sensing technology does not currently resolve the land surface at a scale that is easily observed with ground measurements. One approach to validation is to use existing soil moisture measurement networks and scale these point observations up to the resolution of remote sensing footprints. As part of the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02), one such soil moisture gaging system in the Walnut Creek Watershed, Iowa, provided robust estimates of the soil moisture average for a watershed throughout the summer of 2002. Twelve in situ soil moisture probes were installed across the watershed. These probes recorded soil moisture at a depth of 5 cm from June 29, 2002 to August 19, 2002. The sampling sites were analyzed for temporal and spatial stability by several measures including mean relative difference, Spearman rank, and correlation coefficient analysis. Representative point measurements were used to estimate the watershed scale (3 25 km) soil moisture average and shown to be accurate indicators with low variance and bias of the watershed scale soil moisture distribution. This work establishes the validity of this approach to provide watershed scale soil moisture estimates in this study region for the purposes of satellite validation with estimation errors as small as 3%. Also, the potential sources of error in this type of analysis are explored. This study is a first step in the implementation of large-scale soil moisture validation using existing networks such as the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) and several Agricultural Research Service watersheds as a basis for calibrating satellite soil moisture products, for networks design, and designing field experiments. [Termes IGN] Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Mission
[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) In the framework of the preparation of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, several field experiments are required so as to address specific modeling issues. The goal is to improve current models and to test retrieval algorithms. However, adequate ground instrumentation is scarce and not readily available "off the shelf": In this context, a high-accuracy L-band radiometer was required for a specific long-term campaign for the preparation of the SMOS mission. For this purpose, a dual-polarized radiometer was designed and built to check algorithms for surface soil moisture retrieval from multiangular dual-polarized brightness temperatures. This radiometer has been tested in the field for 20 months and is operational since end of January 2003. The aim of this paper is to give details of the system architecture, calibration procedures, together with the performances obtained and some preliminary results.
