[Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) The design, characteristics, and operation of the Helsinki University of Technology Fully Polarimetric Radiometer (FPoR) are described. The developed 36.5-GHz radiometer can be used for airborne remote sensing ; however, ground-based and laboratory measurements are also possible. A direct crosscorrelation technique with analog correlators, which measures all four Stokes parameters simultaneously, is applied. This paper is the first successful demonstration of an analog direct crosscorrelation technique for polarimetric remote sensing radiometry. The radiometer was subjected to a variety of laboratory tests, and considerable attention is given to analysis of the characteristics of the instrument. Owing to the effective active temperature control system of the receiver, the radiometric stability of the instrument was found to be very high ; test results showing stabilities below 10 mK and of 440 mK on time scales of 800 and 8000 s, respectively, are presented. Furthermore, the absolute accuracy of the system is analyzed to be at a sub-Kelvin level for most measurement conditions. A maritime wind vector experiment was carried out over the Gulf of Finland. The feasibility and performance of the applied correlation technique and the whole radiometer system were verified for fully polarimetric airborne measurements. The obtained brightness temperatures of the first three Stokes parameters show typical harmonic behavior with respect to the surface wind ; the results suggest, however, that the model coefficients presented earlier for oceans may not be directly applicable for different conditions. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Landsat program has been dedicated to sustaining data continuity over the 20-year period during which Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced TM Plus (ETM+) sensors have been acquiring images of the earth's surface. In 2000, NASA launched the Earth Observing1 (EO1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) to test new technology that could improve the TM/ETM+ sensor series, yet ensure Landsat data continuity. The study reported here quantified the continuity of satelliteretrieved surface reflectance () for the three most recent Landsat sensors (Landsat-4 TM, Landsat-5 TM, and Landsat-7 ETM+) and the EO-1 ALI sensor. The study was based on grounddata verification and, in the case of the ETM+ to ALI comparison, coincident image analysis. Reflectance retrieved from all four sensors showed good correlation with groundmeasured reflectance, and the sensortosensor data continuity was excellent for all sensors and all bands. A qualitative analysis of the new ALI spectral bands (4p: 0.845-0.890 um and 5p: 1.201.30 um) showed that ALI band 5p provided information that was different from that provided by the ETM+/ALI shortwave infrared bands 5 and 7 for agricultural targets and that ALI band 4p has the advantage over the existing ETM+ nearinfrared (NIR) band 4 and ALI NIR band 4 of being relatively insensitive to water vapor absorption. The. basic conclusion of this study is that the four sensors can provide excellent data continuity for temporal studies of natural resources. Furthermore, the new technologies put forward by the EO1 ALI sensor have had no apparent effect on data continuity and should be considered for the upcoming Landsat8 sensor payload. [Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The Advanced Spacebome Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) onboard the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Terra spacecraft provides alongtrack digital stereo image data at 15m resolution. As part of ASTER digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy evaluation efforts by the US/Japan ASTER Science Team, stereo image data for four study sites around the world have been employed to validate prelaunch estimates of heighting accuracy. Automated stereocorrelation procedures were implemented using the Desktop Mapping System (DMS) software on a personal computer to derive DEMs with 30-to 150m postings. Results indicate that a rootmeansquare error (RMSE) in elevation between + 7 and + 15 m can be achieved with ASTER stereo image data of good quality. An evaluation of an ASTER DEM data product produced at the US Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Data Center (EDC) yielded an RMSE of + 8.6 m. Overall, the ability to extract elevations from ASTER stereopairs using stereocorrelation techniques meets expectations. [Termes IGN] radiomètre à hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU), and the Humidity Sounder for Brazil (HSB) form an integrated cross-track scanning temperature and humidity sounding system on the Aqua satellite of the Earth Observing System (EOS). AIRS is an infrared spectrometer/radiometer that covers the 3.7-15.4 um spectral range with 2378 spectral channels. AMSU is a 15-channel microwave radiometer operating between 23 and 89 GHz. HSB is a four-channel microwave radiometer that makes measurements between 150 and 190 GHz. In addition to supporting the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's interest in process study and climate research, AIRS is the first hyperspectral infrared radiometer designed to support the operational requirements for medium-range weather forecasting of the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and other numerical weather forecasting centers. AIRS, together with the AMSU and HSB Wcrowave radiometers, will achieve global retrieval accuracy of better than 1 K in the lower troposphere under clear and partly cloudy conditions. This paper presents an overview of the science objectives, AIRS/AMSU/HSB data products, retrieval algorithms, and the ground-data processing concepts. The EOS Aqua was launched on May 4, 2002 from Vandenberg AFB, CA, into a 705 km-high, sun-synchronous orbit. Based on the excellent radiometric and spectral performance demonstrated by AIRS during prelaunch testing, which has by now been verified during on-orbit testing, we expect the assimilation of AIRS data into the numerical weather forecast to result in significant forecast range and reliability improvements.
