[Termes IGN] water vapour radiometerRésumé : (Auteur) Results are presented from the long-term monitoring and calibration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jason Microwave Radiometer (JMR) on the Jason-1 ocean altimetry satellite and the ground-based Advanced Water Vapor Radiometers (AWVRs) developed for the Cassini Gravity Wave Experiment. Both radiometers retrieve the wet tropospheric path delay (PD) of the atmosphere and use internal noise diodes (NDs) for gain calibration. The JMR is the first radiometer to be flown in space that uses NDs for calibration. External calibration techniques are used to derive a time series of ND brightness for both instruments that is greater than four years. For the JMR, an optimal estimator is used to find the set of calibration coefficients that minimize the root-mean-square difference between the JMR brightness temperatures and the on-Earth hot and cold references. For the AWVR, continuous tip curves are used to derive the ND brightness. For the JMR and AWVR, both of which contain three redundant NDs per channel, it was observed that some NDs were very stable, whereas others experienced jumps and drifts in their effective brightness. Over the four-year time period, the ND stability ranged from 0.2% to 3% among the diodes for both instruments. The presented recalibration methodology demonstrates that long-term calibration stability can be achieved with frequent recalibration of the diodes using external calibration techniques. The JMR PD drift compared to ground truth over the four years since the launch was reduced from 3.9 to $-$0.01 mm/year with the recalibrated ND time series. The JMR brightness temperature calibration stability is estimated to be 0.25 K over ten days. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-18 Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) was successfully launched with the fourth Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A onboard in May 2005. After launch, a systematic postlaunch calibration and validation of the instrument performance was conducted with on-orbit data. A brief report of the initial assessment of the instrument performance is presented in this paper. Scan-by-scan examination of the radiometric calibration counts is employed to confirm normal functioning of the instrument and to detect any anomalous events, such as lunar contamination in the space radiometric counts, which are accurately detected, flagged, and corrected using a physical model of lunar surface temperature and antenna patterns derived from on-orbit data. The long-term trends of the space and warm calibration counts, channel gains, and housekeeping temperature sensors are monitored. Temperature sensitivity (or the noise-equivalent $Delta hbox{T}$) values for individual channels are also monitored since launch. The long-term temporal trends of the monthly averages and angular distributions of brightness temperature measurements from the NOAA-16 and -18 over the Amazon rain forest region are obtained and compared to demonstrate that the Amazon rain forest can be used as a hot reference calibration target. The establishment of a land calibration target is an important addition to the few tools available to date for calibration and validation of spaceborne microwave radiometers. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) We present the results of a study that shows that a simple design modification is sufficient to avoid a major shortcoming in the layout of external warm loads commonly used in the calibration of spaceborne microwave radiometers. The modification consists of placing a layer of Plastazote, a polyethylene foam, over the opening of the warm load enclosure. The foam is transparent at micrometer and millimeter wavelengths, is opaque in the infrared and visible, and isolates the warm load from the environment, keeping the temperature of the radiometric warm load constant. The proposed solution can be easily implemented and is suitable even for retrofitting on instruments that have already been built but not yet launched, and the material presents no obvious shortcomings that could prevent its intended application in space. [Termes IGN] température de surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Due to the limitations of infrared remote sensing, sea surface temperature (SST) can be derived only under clear sky conditions from the infrared channels like those in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR), where as microwave radiometers can provide SST even under cloudy conditions. However, the accuracy of SST derived from the microwave sensor is less with a poor spatial resolution. In this study, SSTs over the Arabian Sea derived from NOAA-AVHRR and Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS-P4) multi-frequency scanning microwave radiometer (MSMR) observations have been compared on weekly basis with a view to blend these two observations, so that SST can be provided continuously even under cloudy conditions. The NOAA-AVHRR derived pathfinder SSTs with spatial resolution of 18 km were averaged to 1.5°*1.5° grid resolutions to match with MSMR observations. The analysis was carried out during 2000. Statistical analysis of the NOAA-AVHRR SST shows that the spatial variation of SST within 1.5° grid is negligible compared with the MSMR accuracy of 1.52°C. Thus the comparison of SST from these two sources with different spatial resolution is reasonable. The RMS difference is 1.55°C with a correlation coefficient of 0.73. After removing the seasonal bias, the RMS difference reduced to 0.66°C and the coefficient of correlation improved to 0.89. The correlation coefficient between the two observations has further improved to 0.90 and the RMS difference reduced to 0.53°C when the averaging was done using 5°*5° grid resolution. The accuracy of satellite derived SSTs are also evaluated with the moored buoy observations over the Arabian Sea. The accuracy of MSMR SST observations have improved if 95% confidence level data is considered. The results indicate the possibility of replacing the data gaps in AVHRR SSTs with MSMR estimations after adjusting for the seasonal biases. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The soil moisture experiments held during June-July 2002 (SMEX02) at lowa demonstrated the potential of the L-band radiometer (PALS) in estimation of near surface soil moisture under dense vegetation canopy conditions. The L-band radar was also shown to be sensitive to near surface soil moisture. However, the spatial resolution of a typical satellite L-band radiometer is of the order of tens of kilometers, which is not sufficient to serve the full range of science needs for land surface hydrology and weather modeling applications. Disaggregation schemes for deriving subpixel estimates of soil moisture from radiometer data using higher resolution radar observations may provide the means for making available global soil moisture observations at a much finer scale. This paper presents a simple approach for estimation of change in soil moisture at a higher (radar) spatial resolution by combining L-band copolarized radar backscattering coefficients and L-band radiometric brightness temperatures. Sensitivity of AIRSAR L-band copolarized channels has been demonstrated by comparison with in situ soil moisture measurements as well as PALS brightness temperatures. The change estimation algorithm has been applied to coincident PALS and AIRSAR datasets acquired during the SMEX02 campaign. Using AIRSAR data aggregated to a 100-m resolution, PALS radiometer estimates of soil moisture change at a 400-m resolution have been disaggregated to 100-m resolution. The effect of surface roughness variability on the change estimation algorithm has been explained using integral equation model (IEM) simulations. A simulation experiment using synthetic data has been performed to analyze the performance of the algorithm over a region undergoing gradual wetting and dry down.
