[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) A method is applied to maintain the long-term calibration of a microwave radiometer through intersatellite calibration and is used to mitigate an observed calibration drift of the Advanced Microwave Radiometer (AMR) on Jason-2/Ocean Surface Topography Mission. The AMR provides a correction for the wet tropospheric path delay (PD) of the radar altimeter signal, and it is critical that any drift in the radiometer be estimated and removed to enable studies of global mean sea-level variability. The intersatellite calibration method transfers the long-term calibration from other satellite microwave radiometers using a transfer function to map the other sensor's brightness temperature (TB) observations to those of the AMR. Intersensor mapping functions are derived separately for ocean observations and observations over the Amazon rainforest. This provides a warm and cold TB calibration reference to enable the distinction between long-term gain and offset drifts. A database of co-incident observations is generated between the AMR and conically scanning microwave sensors, namely, AMSR-E, TMI, and SSMIS. Monthly averaged differences are found between the AMR and the AMR equivalent TBs computed from the reference sensors. The apparent change in the AMR calibration determined from the three reference sensors is intercompared between the sensors and compared to that determined using natural on-Earth references. It is found that apparent trends in the AMR TBs between the reference sensors and the natural on-Earth references agree within a month to better than 0.4 K. The AMR 18.7- and 23.8-GHz channels are found to be stable to 0.5 K over the first three years of the mission, and the calibration 34.0-GHz channel is found to drift downward by approximately 6 K. In all channels, the calibration change is determined to be a series of offset jumps (independent of TB). These calibration changes in each AMR channel are estimated and removed using the comparisons to the reference sensors. The uncertainty in the PD long-term stability after recalibration is estimated to be less than 0.5 mm/year from July 2008 to August 2011. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The payload on board the FengYun 3 (FY-3) satellite series has been providing critical observations to the Earth, and the observation data have been processed and distributed to various users by the corresponding ground application system. In this paper, the FY-3 payload and its future development plan are presented, and its ground system is introduced. The major characteristics of the FY-3 instruments and the requirement on the instruments for major applications are discussed as well. There are nine new instruments, including the Microwave Temperature Sounder (MWTS), Microwave Humidity Sounder (MWHS), Infrared Atmospheric Sounder (IRAS), Medium-Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI), Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI), Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Sounder, Total Ozone Unit, Solar Irradiation Monitor, and Earth Radiation Measurement. The data quality from the IRAS, MWTS, MWHS, and MWRI has proved to be good, and according to our evaluation at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the data have a very high availability. The MERSI has 20 visible (VIS) and infrared (IR) channels, of which three are VIS channels with a 250-m spatial resolution, one is a near-IR channel with a 250-m spatial resolution, and one is a long-wave IR channel with a 250-m spatial resolution. The global data at a 250-m spatial resolution are very useful in weather, disaster, and environmental monitoring. Compared with the ground observations, the ozone products derived from the FY-3 series are highly accurate. We have completed the calibration and validation of these sensors and most products. [Termes IGN] MalaisieRésumé : (Auteur) We analyzed the 10-year record (1999-2009) of SeaWinds Ku-band microwave backscatter from humid tropical forest regions in South America, Africa, and Indonesia/Malaysia. While backscatter was relatively stable across much of the region, it declined by 1-2 dB in areas of known large-scale deforestation, and increased by up to 1-2 dB in areas of secondary forest or plantation forest growth and in major metropolitan areas. The reduction in backscatter over 142 18.5 km * 18.5 km blocks of tropical forest was correlated with gross forest cover loss (as determined from Landsat data analysis) (R = -0.78); this correlation improved when restricted to humid tropical forest blocks in South America with high initial forest cover (R = -0.93, n = 22). This study shows that scatterometer-based analyses can provide an important geophysical data record leading to robust identification of the spatial patterns and timing of large-scale change in tropical forests. The coarse spatial resolution of SeaWinds ( ~ 10 km) makes it unsuitable for mapping deforestation at the scale of land-use activity. However, due to a combination of instrument stability, sensitivity to canopy change and insensitivity to atmospheric effects, and straight-forward data processing, Ku-band scatterometery can provide a fully independent assessment of large-scale tropical forest canopy dynamics which may complement the interpretation of higher resolution optical remote sensing. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Since December 2008, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites has been operationally distributing a global 25-km surface soil moisture product derived from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) onboard the meteorological operational platform (METOP) satellite METOP-A. Soil moisture is retrieved by using the semiempirical change detection method originally developed by the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) for the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) flown on the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2. With the launch of the first of the three Meteorological Operational Platforms (METOP-A) in October 2006, ASCAT onboard METOP-A inherits and continues the role of his predecessor AMI. The original soil moisture retrieval algorithm (TU Wien model) was expected to be almost directly applicable for ASCAT with only minor changes, since the configuration and technical design is similar to the ERS scatterometers. Since the TU Wien model requires a robust historic long-term reference of scattering parameters, the initial near real-time METOP ASCAT soil moisture product had to rely on the model parameters derived from over 15 years of ERS-1/2. However, the combination of ASCAT backscatter measurements and ERS-1/2 historic long-term reference introduced some artifacts in the soil moisture product. The objectives of this paper were to analyze and investigate the impact of the ERS-1/2 historic long-term reference on the soil moisture retrieval. An error model has been developed to quantify the effects of the two main error sources: differences in spatial resolution and absolute calibration. The results of the study show that a simple model is able to describe the artifacts in the initial near real-time METOP ASCAT soil moisture product, which frequently occur in areas characterized by sharp backscatter contrasts. The expected overestimation of soil moisture using ERS-1/2 model parameters due to a calibration bias between AMI- and ASCAT could be modeled as well. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present an analysis of the radiometric performance of the three 1.4-GHz noise injection radiometers of the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite. The units measure the antenna temperature, which contributes to the average brightness temperature level of SMOS retrievals. We assess the radiometric resolution of the receivers, the similarity between their measurements, and their thermal stability. For these purposes, we use SMOS measurement data gathered during the first year of the orbital operations of the satellite, which was launched in November 2009. The main results from the analysis are that the units meet the design requirements with a margin. Also, we present a new thermal model for the radiometers to further enhance their stability.
