[Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) This article describes the outcomes of an international workshop on urban remote sensing. The workshop synthesized the needs of remote sensing scientists to better monitor and analyse urban physical and social dynamics. The workshop was held with urban land use forecasting workshop in April 2011 in Arizona. The four major themes of the jointly held workshops were application, data, scale and case studies. Application refers to how data are used to address urban problems. Data refers to the sources and types of raw data available. Scale is the ever-present concern over data reduction and resolution. Case studies examine a single urban area, typically based on one or two primary themes. One outcome was to integrate multiple case studies to form an urban typology. To respond to this need, this article integrates two case studies on the urban heat island in Atlanta, GA and Phoenix, AZ based on the four themes. For in situ data, Vs30 values are derived from the masw technique deployed in and around the city. For satellite imagery, we use an aster GDEM of Hispaniola. We apply both pixel- and object-based imaging methods on the aster gdem to explore local topography (absolute elevation values) and classify terrain types such as mountains, alluvial fans and basins/near-shore regions. We assign nehrp seismic site class ranges based on available Vs30 values. A comparison of results from imagery-based methods to results from traditional geologic-based approaches reveals good overall correspondence. We conclude that image analysis of RS data provides reliable first-order site characterization results in the absence of local data and can be useful to refine detailed site maps with sparse local data. [Termes IGN] réflectance du solRésumé : (Auteur) Soil surfaces in arid and semi-arid lands often lack photoautotrophic life but are covered by communities of soil surface covering organisms able to tolerate dehydration and thus adapted to aridity. One of the important objectives of multi-spectral remote sensing instruments is the detection of the optical characteristics of the Earth's surface using high spectral resolution bands. In this study ASTER imagery and reflected radiation in VNIR bands were used to investigate Biological Soil Crusts (BSCs) in the field. By applying IARR (Internal Average Relative Reflectance), FCC (False Color Composite), MNF (Minimum Noise Fraction Transform), MEM (Mathematical Evaluation Method) techniques, BSCs are successfully detected in the Chadormalu desert area of central Iran. This study clearly shows the capability of ASTER data (VNIR bands) to detect BSC or cyanobacteria soil crusts. The MEM method is suggested as an accurate tool for full scale studies. [Termes IGN] satellite artificielRésumé : (Auteur) The proposed method in this paper uses circular statistics for the analysis of errors in the positional accuracy of geometric corrections satellite images using Independent Check Lines (ICL) instead of Independent Check Points (ICP). Circular statistics has been preferred because of the vectorial nature of the spatial error. A study case has been presented and discussed in detail. From the terra-aster images of Extremadura area (Spain), the Ground Control Point (GCP), ICP, and ICL data were acquired using differential GPS through field survey, and the planimetric positional accuracy was analyzed by both the conventional method (using ICP) and the proposed method (using ICL). Comparing conventional and proposed methods, the results indicated that modulus statistics are similar (e.g., RMSE of Geometric Correction 1 were 17.5 for the conventional method and 17.2 m for proposed method). But as additional results, azimuthal component statistics was calculated (e.g., mean direction: 247.2° in Geometric Correction 1), and several tests were made which showed the error distribution are not uniform and normal.
