[Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) Topographic variations affect the reflectance properties of the Earth's surface and are often removed in remote sensing studies. especially when significant terrain variations exist. In this study, however, we show that shading effects assessed by Landsat can be treated as a signal that stores important topographic information, especially when the spectral characteristics of a surface are homogenous. The coastal transverse dunes of the Ashdod area, and the desert linear dunes of Nizzana (both located in Israel), were selected to investigate the above-mentioned idea. The dune heights in these areas are 10 m on average (relative to their surroundings) and have maximum slopes of 33°. An innovative method for extracting slope, aspect, and height data for sand dunes using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) images was developed, based on the regularity and periodicity of dunes landscapes. Using two Landsat images representing different sun zenith and azimuth angles, reflectance values of each image were converted to cos(i) values (i =incident angle between the surface normal and the solar beam radiation), applying histogram matching methods. The slope and aspect of each pixel were determined as those that give the best prediction of the observed value of cos(i). Height profiles were then extracted, using simple trigonometric relationships. The accuracies of heights and slopes along selected profile lines were to the order of 1 m and 3°, respectively (at a spatial resolution of 15 m). Best results were obtained when the images included one from the summer and the other from the winter, corresponding to maximum difference in solar zenith and azimuth angles. Errors in heights were attributed to surface heterogeneity (e.g., presence of biogenic soil crusts in the rainy season), geometric correction errors, cast shadows, and Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) effects. Comparison to Advanced Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) 3D information showed that the proposed method is better in representing the topographic variation of the area than the digital elevation model (DEM) produced by ASTER. [Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper we present the use of ASTER data for the creation of a Digital Terrain Model (DMT) of high accuracy. Using a stereo pair of ASTER satellite images with 15m resolution we created two DMTs: one with a 30m pixel size and another one with a 15m pixel size. Then we made a statistical verification of the two DTMs accuracy. We created another DTM with 30m pixel size from digitized contours of 1:50000 scale topographic maps. We first made an optical comparison of the two DTMs with 30m pixel size. Then we subtracted the two DTMs and we presented their difference. Finally, we verified the DTMs accuracy using 68 points of a well-known elevation. All the results demonstrated that DTMs derived from ASTER data have very good accuracy. From the different contributions made during this symposium it becomes clear that, after a set of new sensors like Envisat, Ikonos, Quickbird, ASTER, MODIS ... became operational, now also the applications have reached the operational stage. The development of adapted methodologies to this new generation of sensors needs a couple of years before entering the application stage.
It is also clear that Very High Resolution data has entered definitively the remote sensing applications "forum", with the emphasis on studies dealing with resolutions adapted to new application areas, urban structures for example, something which was not possible in the past since the resolutions were not appropriate. Many contributions illustrate the use of sensors with a better and finer spectral resolution. Environmental protection, a new field of application was also the theme of several contributions.
It must be started, nevertheless, that for the moment radar images remain the inherent tool for certain applications and Landsat TM and ETM+ for optical remote sensing, remain the "work horses". The recent difficulties with the Landcast sensor, however, may change this part of the "remote sensing landscape". But other sensors with others and sometimes more possibilities are ready to take over. Wo=ith new strategies for Earth observation being formulated, one may conclude that the remote sensing community really is in transition.Note de contenu : - Keynote lectures

[Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) Mangroves reach their optimal development in the wet tropics although some little known mangrove stands are reported in subtropical arid coastlines especially from the Red Sea to Pakistan where they form one of the driest mangrove habitats in the world. Because they constitute the only available evergreen forest in hyperarid warm coastal areas, the main wetlands for migratory birds and essential nursery ground for many species of fish, it Is imperative to produce a sufficiently accurate map for monitoring their changes and for their protection. The main objective of the present work is to test and to select the best methodological approach to discriminate and map the mangroves and related coastal ecosystems in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, a coastal stretch about 750km long. It was found that the best practical results were produced by the Maximum Likelihood and Mahalanobis classifications although some limitations remain unsolved, especially in open ecosystems, which are common in arid areas. Moreover, SPOT4 HighResolution Visible InfraRed (HRVIR) data proves at least as efficient as TERRA ASTER data, in spite of a slightly finer ground resolution and the great number of channels for ASTER. Ultimately, the most appropriate working scale for mapping coastal habitats, compatible with pixel size, is in the order of 1/25 000. [Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (Auteur) Advanced Land Imager (ALI), Advanced SpaceThermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), and Hyperion imaging spectrometer data covering an area in the Central Andes between Volcan Socompa and Salar de Llullaillaco were used to map hydrothermally altered rocks associated with young volcanic systems. Six ALI channels in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range (0.4-1.0 um) were useful discriminating between ferric-iron alteration minerals based on the spectral shapes of electronic absorption features seen in continuum-removed spectra. Six ASTER channels in the short wavelength infrared (1.0-2.5 um) enabled distinctions between clay and sulfate mineral types based on the positions of band related to Al-OH vibrational absorption features. Hypeimagery embedded in the broader image coverage of ALI and ASTER provided essential leverage for calibrating and improving the mapping accuracy of the multispectral data. This capability is especially valuable in remote areas of the earth where available geologic and other ground truth information is limited.
