[Termes IGN] thermographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) The directional surface temperatures over urban areas are measured using an airborne TIR camera equipped with wide-angle lenses. The experimental design is described and the possible sources of errors related to the instruments and the atmosphere are analysed and corrections proposed. The data acquisition protocol is adapted to provide directional TIR measurements in a - 60° to + 60° range for zenith and 0 to 360° for azimuth view angles. Two parts of the city of Marseille, the densely built old city centre and a built/vegetated mixture of individual houses and gardens in a suburb, have been studied during summer 2001 in the framework of the UBL-ESCOMPTE project. The results obtained reveal important hot spot effects and differences of surface brightness temperatures varying between - 5 and 7 K between nadir and off-nadir measurements, according to azimuth view angles. Acquisitions performed over the two areas also illustrate the impact of the surface structure and presence of vegetation on the hot spot. An example application for the correction of two temporal series of NOAA 14 and NOAA 16 data is given. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) An innovative, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based technique for improved automatic detection of volcanic Hotspots and thermal anomalies is proposed in this paper. It is mainly based on a multitemporal analysis of historical, long-term satellite records. Such a technique basically rests on the Robust AVHRR Techniques (RAT) approach, which has been already successfully applied to sevreral natural and environmental emergencies (e.g., fires, floods, earthquakes). In this work, the proposed technique has been tested on an extended set of eruptive events of Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Results achieved, in terms of reliability (low false alarm rate) as well as of effectiveness (detection sensitivity), are described in detail. Moreover, the potential in low-level thermal anomaly detection, as possible pre-eruptive thermal signs, is also addressed and preliminary results obtained for a couple of events, discussed. The study cases here presented show the benefits of such a technique especially when different observational conditions (time/season of pass, atmospheric moisture content, solar illumination, satellite angles of view, etc.) are considered, making such a method globally applicable. The future prospects, also in terms of possible operational scenarios, coming from the implementation of such an approach on the new generation of satellite sensors (such as SEVIRI aboard Meteosat Second Generation) are also discussed. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a significant parameter for identifying micro-climatic changes, their spatial distribution and intensities in relation to the urban environment. In this study, LST is estimated using thermal infrared data as acquired by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite and by using a split window algorithm that is adjusted to account for the region of Greece. For the assignment of the surface emissivity, a new methodology based on the Coordination of Information on the Environment (CORINE) Land Cover database for Greece is used. The algorithm is applied to a night-time series of NOAA/AVHRR images of Greece in order to produce surface temperature maps of an enhanced spatial resolution of 250m for the cities of Thessaloniki, Patra, Volos and Iraklion, which are the most significant harbour cities of Greece. Results indicate the presence of urban heat islands (UHIs) in each case study, with highest temperatures detected along the coastal zone of the harbour cities resulting from denser urban fabric and road network as well as intense human activity. [Termes IGN] transmission de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Project FiRE (First Response Experiment), a disaster management technology demonstration, was performed in 2001. The experiment demonstrated the use of a thermal multispectral scanning imager, integrated on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a satellite uplink/downlink image data telemetry system, and nearrealtime georectification of the resultant imagery for data distribution via the Internet to disaster managers. The FiRE demonstration provided geocorrected image data over a controlled burn to a fire management community in nearrealtime by means of the melding of new technologies. The use of the UAV demonstrated remotely piloted flight (thereby reducing the potential for loss of human life during hazardous missions), and the ability to "linger and stare " over the fire for extended periods of time (beyond the capabilities of humanpilot endurance). Improvements in a high temperature calibrated thermal imaging scanner allowed "remote" operations from a UAV and provided realtime accurate fire information collection over a controlled burn. Improved bitrate capacity telemetry capabilities increased the amount, structure, and information content of the image data relayed to the ground. The integration of precision navigation instrumentation allowed improved accuracies in georectification of the resultant imagery, easing data ingestion and overlay in a GIS framework. We present a discussion of the feasibility of utilizing new platforms, improved sensor configurations, improved telemetry, and new geocorrection software to facilitate wildfire management and mitigation strategies.
