[Termes IGN] spectromètreRésumé : (Auteur) ARES (Airborne Reflective/Emissive Spectrometer) is an airborne imaging spectrometer for remote sensing of land surfaces covering the wavelength regions 0.45-2.45 um and 8-13 um with 160 channels. The instrument is being built by Integrated Spectronics, financed by DLR and GFZ, and will be available to the scientific community from 2005 on. This contribution presents the design of the thermal spectrometer covering the 8-13 um region with 32 channels of 150 nm bandwidth while a separate paper treats the instrument specifications in the solar reflective region. The spectroradiometric design is based on scientific requirements derived from application scenarios comprising vegetation, soils of different compositions, and mineral exploration. The corresponding emissivity spectra are input for a simulation model that calculates at-sensor radiance spectra, resamples them with the channel-specific response functions, adds different amounts of sensor noise to the signal, and performs a retrieval to get the corresponding noisy surface emissivity spectra. The results of the simulation study indicate that a spectral wavelength accuracy of 3 nm and a sensor noise equivalent temperature of 0.05 - 0.1K are required for an accurate retrieval of emissivity spectra. [Termes IGN] thermographie aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) The directional surface temperatures over urban areas are measured using an airborne TIR camera equipped with wide-angle lenses. The experimental design is described and the possible sources of errors related to the instruments and the atmosphere are analysed and corrections proposed. The data acquisition protocol is adapted to provide directional TIR measurements in a - 60° to + 60° range for zenith and 0 to 360° for azimuth view angles. Two parts of the city of Marseille, the densely built old city centre and a built/vegetated mixture of individual houses and gardens in a suburb, have been studied during summer 2001 in the framework of the UBL-ESCOMPTE project. The results obtained reveal important hot spot effects and differences of surface brightness temperatures varying between - 5 and 7 K between nadir and off-nadir measurements, according to azimuth view angles. Acquisitions performed over the two areas also illustrate the impact of the surface structure and presence of vegetation on the hot spot. An example application for the correction of two temporal series of NOAA 14 and NOAA 16 data is given. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) An innovative, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based technique for improved automatic detection of volcanic Hotspots and thermal anomalies is proposed in this paper. It is mainly based on a multitemporal analysis of historical, long-term satellite records. Such a technique basically rests on the Robust AVHRR Techniques (RAT) approach, which has been already successfully applied to sevreral natural and environmental emergencies (e.g., fires, floods, earthquakes). In this work, the proposed technique has been tested on an extended set of eruptive events of Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Results achieved, in terms of reliability (low false alarm rate) as well as of effectiveness (detection sensitivity), are described in detail. Moreover, the potential in low-level thermal anomaly detection, as possible pre-eruptive thermal signs, is also addressed and preliminary results obtained for a couple of events, discussed. The study cases here presented show the benefits of such a technique especially when different observational conditions (time/season of pass, atmospheric moisture content, solar illumination, satellite angles of view, etc.) are considered, making such a method globally applicable. The future prospects, also in terms of possible operational scenarios, coming from the implementation of such an approach on the new generation of satellite sensors (such as SEVIRI aboard Meteosat Second Generation) are also discussed. [Termes IGN] température de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) OMIS1 (Operative Modular Imaging Spectrometer) is a new imaging spectrometer designed by Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, and has eight thermal infrared bands (nos. 105112). This paper presents the use of images obtained from these thermal infrared bands to detect and map coal fires in northwestern China. According to experiments in the Rujigou area of Ningxia municipality, each thermal infrared band has high correlation (>0.939). Regression analysis of land surface temperature (LST) with the pixel value in each thermal infrared band indicates: (1) for images acquired at daytime (from 11:00 to 13:00 local time), the first four thermal infrared bands have a linear relationship, and the final four bands have an exponential relationship; (2) for images acquired in the early morning (from 06:00 to 07:30), each band has a linear relationship. In conclusion, the ground temperature map is based on the 107th band of morning time. The mapping error is greatly determined by the quantity and precision of ground data measured synchronously. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a climatic water budget model, and the STATSGO database were used within a GIS environment to determine the influences of hydrologic soil properties on soil moisture and thermal emission in western-central Kansas for a dry year, 2000. Two important variables, waterholding capacity (WHC) and hydrologic soil group (HSG), were controlled in our water budget experiment to evaluate their impacts on soil moisture content (SMC) changes throughout the period. Results showed that HSG affected drought detection and occurrence very little, but WHC variations explained most local variations of soil moisture content. As a strong indicator of relative soil moisture deficit, the Standardized Thermal Index (STI) patterns were also influenced by WHC. Generally, the earlier the soil moisture content drops below 40%, the earlier the STI reaches a threshold value of 0.2 or higher. Vegetation responses to thermal detection lagged behind the STI by up to 8 weeks, which was computed by comparing the STI and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) deviation from a 10-year mean. The spatial pattern of lagtimes was not apparent, but lagtimes were correlated with a WHC component.
