[Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (auteur) Surface water storage in floodplains and wetlands is poorly known from regional to global scales, in spite of its importance in the hydrological and the carbon balances, as the wet areas are an important water compartment which delays water transfer, modifies the sediment transport through sedimentation and erosion processes, and are a source for greenhouse gases. Remote sensing is a powerful tool for monitoring temporal variations in both the extent, level, and volume, of water using the synergy between satellite images and radar altimetry. Estimating water levels over flooded area using radar altimetry observation is difficult. In this study, an unsupervised classification approach is applied on the radar altimetry backscattering coefficients to discriminate between flooded and non-flooded areas in the Cuvette Centrale of Congo. Good detection of water (open water, permanent and seasonal inundation) is above 0.9 using radar altimetry backscattering from ENVISAT and Jason-2. Based on these results, the time series of water levels were automatically produced. They exhibit temporal variations in good agreement with the hydrological regime of the Cuvette Centrale. Comparisons against a manually generated time series of water levels from the same missions at the same locations show a very good agreement between the two processes (i.e., RMSE ≤ 0.25 m in more than 80%/90% of the cases and R ≥ 0.95 in more than 95%/75% of the cases for ENVISAT and Jason-2, respectively). The use of the time series of water levels over rivers and wetlands improves the spatial pattern of the annual amplitude of water storage in the Cuvette Centrale. It also leads to a decrease by a factor of four for the surface water estimates in this area, compared with a case where only time series over rivers are considered. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Reclaimed airports usually have fragile geological structures and are susceptible to the uneven ground settlements caused by filling-material consolidation, underground construction, and dynamic loading from takeoff and landing of aircrafts. Therefore, deformation monitoring is of great significance to the safe operation of reclaimed airports. This study adopts an improved permanent-scatterer interferometric synthetic-aperture radar strategy to map the spatiotemporal deformation of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport in China using ascending and descending Envisat/ASAR data acquired from 2007 to 2010 and Sentinel-1 data from 2015 to 2019. The results show that uneven settlements of the airport concentrate in the new reclaimed land. Then we explore the settlement characteristics of each functional area. Furthermore, we separate out the dynamic-load settlement of runway No. 2 and confirm the settlements caused by dynamic load. This study provides new ideas for studying deformation in similar fields, and technical references for the future construction of Shenzhen Airport. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) Earth Observation (EO) provides a unique means of obtaining information on land use/cover and of its changes, which is of key importance in many scientific and practical applications. EO data is already widely used, for example, in environmental practices or decision-making related to food availability and security. As such, it is imperative to examine the suitability of different EO datasets, including their synergies, in respect to their ability to create products and tools for such practices and to guide effectively such decisions. This work aims at exploring the added value of the synergistic use of optical and radar data (from the Landsat TM and Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) sensors respectively). Such information can help towards improving the accuracy of land cover classifications from EO datasets. As a case study, the region of Wales in the UK has been used. Two classifications—one based on optical data alone and another one developed from the synergy of optical and RADAR datasets acquired nearly, concurrently were developed for the studied region. Evaluation of the derived land/use cover maps was performed on the basis of the confusion matrix using validation points derived from a Phase 1 habitat map of Wales. The results showed 15% increase in overall accuracy (84% from 69%) and kappa coefficient (0.81 from 0.65) using the synergistic approach over the scenario where only optical data were used in the classification. In addition, McNemar’s test was used to assess the statistical significance of the obtained results. Results of this test provided further confirmed that the use of optical data synergistically with the radar data provides more accurate land use/cover maps in comparison with the use of optical data alone. [Termes IGN] ventIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been demonstrated invaluable in observing the global ocean winds and waves. SAR images acquired by multiple sensors are employed, including Sentinel-1(S-1), Envisat/ASAR, Gaofen-3 and Radarsat-2. This thesis reviews the commonly used SAR parameters (NRCS and azimuth cutoff) in the first part. A series of calibration steps are required to obtain a proper NRCS and assessment of NRCS is carried out for S-1wave mode (WV). It turns out that WV is poorly calibrated and is thus re-calibrated to obtain accurate NRCS. Azimuth cut off is demonstrated to be complementary to NRCS and can account for the sea state impact on the wind retrieval. Based on the available fully polarimetric SAR products, azimuth cut off is found to vary greatly with polarizations. The present SAR mapping transformation is sufficient to interpret the co-polarized azimuth cut off, while not for the cross-polarization. With the limitations of SAR imaging in mind, a new parameter is proposed and defined based on the SAR image cross-spectra, termed as MACS. The imaginary part of MACS is found to be a signed quantity relative to the wind direction. Given this dependence, an independent wind retrieval algorithm is expected to benefit. The magnitude of MACS is able to aid for estimate of modulation function of SAR mapping. In addition, MACS also gives promising results regarding the global wave studies. The global signatures of MACS at various wave lengths are well representative of the winds distributions, spatially and seasonally. MACS of long waves shows greater values over the storm tracks while the shorter waves are mostly within the trader winds. These results are expected to help evaluate the model outputs and complement further studies of the global wave spectral climate. It was initially designed for measuring the ocean’s topography, with reference to an ellipsoid, and for the determination of the marine geoid. Satellite altimetry has provided extremely valuable information on ocean science (e.g., circulation surface geostrophic currents, eddy structures, wave heights, and the propagation of oceanic Kelvin and Rossby waves). With more than 25 years of observations, it is also becoming vital to climate research, providing accurate measurements of sea level variations from regional to global scales. Altimetry has also demonstrated a strong potential for geophysical, cryospheric, and hydrological research and is now commonly used for the monitoring of Arctic and Antarctic ice sheet topography and of terrestrial surface water levels. This book aims to present reviews and recent advances of general interest in the use of radar altimetry in Earth sciences. Manuscripts are related to any aspect of radar altimetry technique or geophysical applications. We also encourage manuscripts resulting from the application of new altimetric technology (SAR, SARin, and Ka band) and improvements expected from missions to be launched in the near future (i.e., SWOT).
