[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Many large countries, including Canada, rely on earth observation as a practical and cost-effective means of monitoring their vast inland ecosystems. A potentially efficient approach is one that detects vegetation changes over a hierarchy of spatial scales ranging from coarse to fine. This paper presents a Change Screening Analysis Technique (Change-SAT) designed as a coarse filter to identify the location and timing of large (>5-1 0 kM2) forest cover changes caused by anthropogenic and natural disturbances at an annual, continental scale. The method uses change metrics derived from 1-km multi-temporal SPOT VEGETATION and NOAA AVHRR imagery (reflectance, temperature, and texture information) and ancillary spatial variables (proximity to active fires, roads, and forest tenures) in combination with logistic regression and decision tree classifiers. Major forest changes of interest include wildfires, insect defoliation, forest harvesting and flooding. Change-SAT was tested for 1998-2000 using an independent sample of change and no-change sites over Canada. Overall accuracy was 94% and commission error, especially critical for large-area change applications, was less than 1%. Regions identified as having major or widespread changes could be targeted for more detailed investigation and mapping using field visits, aerial survey or fine resolution EO methods, such as those being applied under Canadian monitoring programs. This multi-resolution approach could be used as pan of a forest monitoring system to report on carbon stocks and forest stewardship. [Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) Different methodologies to estimate the amplitude of the sea surface temperature diurnal variation (DV) and remove it from remotly sensed SST images have been proposed in the last years. Among these, the parametrization proposed by Stuart-Menteth et al. (2004a, b) [...] published by the International GHRSST-PP Project-Office pp.241 appeared as the most promising. In fact, it takes into account wind and insolation variations during the day, that effectively drive the SST diurnal cycle. This parametrization has been tested on 6 months of NOAA-16 AVHRR images acquired and processed at CNR with Pathfinder algorithm. The tests evidenced some limits for a correct estimation of the DV in low-wind regimes for any insolation condition, and high insolation regimes (>600 W/m2 ) when the wind intensity increases of more than 2m/s during the morning. The limits of applicability of DV correction to NOAA-16 AVHRR data (at least for the Mediterranean area) were thus identified, and data outside these limits were flagged. However, some anomalous heating were not corrected even with these constraints, due to the lack of accuracy in the wind field used for the correction. As result, a strategy to flag residual outliers in the corrected daily images has been developed, based on the comparison to an optimally interpolated night SSt field of the previous day. A pair of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes over coincident multitemporal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) time-series of directional hemispherical reflectance were used to develop a fine-scale land cover map using either eight or three categories and to estimate the endmembers of the AVHRR image using a positive constrained linear least-squares method. Furthermore, three approaches were evaluated for compositing sub-pixel estimates over cloudy areas in the AVHRR image. Finally, from validation tests made for unmixing and compositing methods, the results suggest that these methods may be generally useful for comparing multispectral images in space and time. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) An innovative, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based technique for improved automatic detection of volcanic Hotspots and thermal anomalies is proposed in this paper. It is mainly based on a multitemporal analysis of historical, long-term satellite records. Such a technique basically rests on the Robust AVHRR Techniques (RAT) approach, which has been already successfully applied to sevreral natural and environmental emergencies (e.g., fires, floods, earthquakes). In this work, the proposed technique has been tested on an extended set of eruptive events of Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Results achieved, in terms of reliability (low false alarm rate) as well as of effectiveness (detection sensitivity), are described in detail. Moreover, the potential in low-level thermal anomaly detection, as possible pre-eruptive thermal signs, is also addressed and preliminary results obtained for a couple of events, discussed. The study cases here presented show the benefits of such a technique especially when different observational conditions (time/season of pass, atmospheric moisture content, solar illumination, satellite angles of view, etc.) are considered, making such a method globally applicable. The future prospects, also in terms of possible operational scenarios, coming from the implementation of such an approach on the new generation of satellite sensors (such as SEVIRI aboard Meteosat Second Generation) are also discussed. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) While accurate information on ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange is available at eddy covariance flux tower sites, method, methods to expand predictions of C02 and energy exchange to regional or global scales with high fidelity are lacking. The main objective of this study was to examine the applicability of land surface and atmospheric products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for assessing the spatial variation in C02 and water vapor fluxes for cloudless agricultural land pixels at the Island of Zealand, Denmark. The spatial distribution of green leaf area index, directbeam ark: diffuse solar radiation and air humidity was inferred on the basis of late morning MODIS data that was combined with afternoon AVHRR data to resolve the diurnal variation in air and surface temperature. These variables were used in a coupled "twoleaf' ecosystem model operating at an hourly time scale. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) was strongly correlated with field measurements of green leaf area index (r2=0.91) and remained sensitive to variations in green biomass up to green leaf area indices of 45. Evaluation against standard meteorological data showed that instantaneous estimates of air temperature, actual vapor pressure and incoming solar radiation could be retrieved with overall root mean square errors of 2.5°C, 138.3 Pa and 47.7 Wm2, respectively. The combination of late morning and afternoon inferences made it possible to resolve the diurnal course in key model parameters, and predicted rates of ecosystem C02 and water vapor exchange were comparable to eddy covariance measurements at a single flux tower. A large spatial diversity in C02 and water vapor exchange was maintained throughout the study period due to significant regional variations in meteorological input variables and large spatial differences in canopy development. The results of this study stress the necessity of pixel based estimates for an accurate evaluation of regional budgets of C02 and water vapor exchange.
