[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite-based mapping can provide a timely and efficient means of identifying burned vegetation at continental scales for estimating greenhouse gas emissions and impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget. In this study, we used a sample of 55 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes distributed across Canada to validate and calibrate 1998 and 1999 national-level burned areas maps produced using coarse resolution (approx. 1-km) SPOT VEGETATION and NOAA AVHRR imagery. Commission and omissions errors, based on fire events greater than 200 ha, were found to be small in the coarse resolution maps (4 percent and 1 percent, respectively). However, the coarse resolution burned-area estimates were 72 percent larger than the crown fire burned area mapped at 30 m using Landsat TM (11,039 versus 6,403 ha average area). This bias was attributed to spatial aggregation effects in which the coarse resolution product included the tree crown fire, partial burn, and unburned fractions of a pixel. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) The operational utilization of remote sensing techniques for monitoring terrestrial ecosystems is often constrained by problems of undersampling in space and time, particularly in heterogeneous and unstable Mediterranean environments. The current work deals with the use of the NOAA-AVHRR and LandsatTM/ETM+ images to produce long-term NDVI data series characterising coniferous and broadleaved forests in a protected coastal area in Tuscany (Central Italy). Two methods to extract NDVI values of relatively small vegetated areas from NOAA-AVHRR data were first evaluated by comparison to estimates from higher resolution LandsatTM/ETM+ images. The optimal method was then applied to multitemporal AVHRR data series to derive 10-day NDVI profiles of coniferous and broadleaved forests over a 15-year period (19862000). Trend analyses performed on these data series showed that notable NDVI decreases occurred during the study period, particularly for the coniferous forest in summer and early fall. Further analysis carried out on local meteorological measurements led to identify the likely causes of these negative trends in contemporaneous winter rainfall decreases which were significantly correlated with the found NDVI variations. [Termes IGN] turbulenceRésumé : (Auteur) The primary objective of this paper is to describe the validation of a parametric model (C-Fix) designed to estimate the basic carbon mass fluxes of forests in Belgium. Most validation efforts in the literature are based on point measurements. Since landscapes in Belgium are quite heterogeneous, the spatial up-scaling of a point measurement to the level of a sensor pixel is a crucial issue. Process based models quite often have a large set of input variables, some of them hardly available or not measurable on a regional basis; on the other hand most of the process based models possess a prognostic capacity. The parametric C-Fix model estimates carbon mass fluxes from local, regional to continental scales. It ingests only a modest number of meteorological input variables, including satellite observations. Parametric models do not possess a prognostic capacity, but the spatial up-scaling by the use of remote sensing data is much more straightforward than with process models. In this paper, we describe the validation of C-Fix with eddy covariance NEP (net ecosystem production) measurements and further applied C-Fix for the mapping of the geographical distribution of carbon mass fluxes over the entire Belgian territory, using NOAA-AVHRR (1997) and SPOT4-VGT imagery (April 1998-March 1999). We combine a forest probability map, derived from NOAA data for 1997 with the mapped estimates of Belgian NEP to obtain forest NEP per image pixel. Forest NEP is validated regionally, with measurements of carbon exchange obtained at two Belgian Euroflux eddy covariance tower sites (the Brasschaat, 'Inslag' and Vielsalm, 'Tinscubois' forest sites). A correlation analysis is performed for the estimated forest NEPs at both Euroflux sites and the NEP measured there, assumed to be primarily from forest. Finally, a correlation analysis with a process-based stand scale model (ASPECTS) is performed for the two forest sites, as a cross cheek on the validation results. Our results demonstrate that a parametric model, like C-Fix, provides a good basis to estimate the evolution and geographical distribution of the main constituents of the carbon budget of terrestrial ecosystems, in this study specifically forest ecosystems at the regional scale (Belgium). [Termes IGN] réflectance végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) For quantitative studies of vegetation dynamics, satellite data need to be corrected for spurious effects. In this study, we have applied several changes to an earlier advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) processing methodology (ABC3; [Remote Sens. Environ. 60 (1997) 35; J. Geophys. Res.Atmos, 102 (1997) 29625; Can. J. Remote Sens. 23 (1997) 163]), to better represent the various physical processes causing contamination of the AVHRR measurements. These included published recent estimates of the NOAA-11 and NOAA-14 AVHRR calibration trajectories for channels 1 and 2; the best available estimates for the water vapour, aerosol and ozone amounts at the time of AVHRR data acquisition; an improved bidirectional reflectance algorithm that also takes into consideration surface topography; and an improved image screening algorithm for contaminated pixels. Unlike the previous study that compared the composite images to a single-date AVHRR image, we employed coincident TM images to approximate the AVHRR pixel field of view during the data acquisition. Compared to ABC3, the modified procedure ABOV2 was found to improve the accuracy of AVHRR pixel reflectance estimates, both in the sensitivity (slope) of the regression and in r2. The improvements were especially significant in AVHRR channel 1. In comparison with reference values derived from two full TM scenes, the corrected AVHRR surface reflectance estimates had average standard errors values of + 0.009 for AVHRR C1, + 0.019 for C2, and + 0.04 for NDVI; the corresponding r2 values were 0.55, 0.80, and 0.50, respectively. The changes in ABC3V2 were not able to completely remove interannual variability for land cover types with little or no vegetation cover, which would be expected to remain stable over time, and they increased the interannual variability of mixed forest and grassland. These results are attributed to a combination of increased sensitivity to interannual dynamics on one hand, and the inability to remove all sources of noise for barren or sparsely vegetated northern land cover types on the other. [Termes IGN] TRMMRésumé : (Auteur) Eight different fire datasets for Indonesia were compared with each other and to fine spatial resolution burnscar maps. Results show that each dataset detects different fires. More than two-thirds of the fires detected by one dataset are not detected by any other dataset. None of the datasets detect fires in all test areas. Fire regime, satellite sensor characteristics and fire detection algorithms all influence which fires are detected. Fire datasets were not complementing each other as they all had commission as well as omission errors.
