[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) Hurricane Harvey in 2017 marked an important transition where many disaster victims used social media rather than the overloaded 911 system to seek rescue. This article presents a machine-learning-based detector of rescue requests from Harvey-related Twitter messages, which differentiates itself from existing ones by accounting for the potential impacts of ZIP codes on both the preparation of training samples and the performance of different machine learning models. We investigate how the outcomes of our ZIP code filtering differ from those of a recent, comparable study in terms of generating training data for machine learning models. Following this, experiments are conducted to test how the existence of ZIP codes would affect the performance of machine learning models by simulating different percentages of ZIP-code-tagged positive samples. The findings show that (1) all machine learning classifiers except K-nearest neighbors and Naïve Bayes achieve state-of-the-art performance in detecting rescue requests from social media; (2) using ZIP code filtering could increase the effectiveness of gathering rescue requests for training machine learning models; (3) machine learning models are better able to identify rescue requests that are associated with ZIP codes. We thereby encourage every rescue-seeking victim to include ZIP codes when posting messages on social media. This study is a useful addition to the literature and can be helpful for first responders to rescue disaster victims more efficiently. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (auteur) Despite the continuous improvement of the widely used empirical model international reference ionosphere (IRI), the recently appeared new models must be tested worldwide. Testing along the meridians has the advantage of dealing with the latitudinal dependent parameters. This paper uses new models of parameters foF2 (critical frequency), TEC (total electron content), and τ (equivalent slab thickness of the ionosphere), which are of great importance for evaluating the effects of space weather. IRI-Plas, NNT2F2, and NTSM models were tested using data from 6 ionosondes located along the meridian 110° E in March 2012. It is shown that the IRI-Plas model provides the closest values to experiment with respect to τ, while the NTSM model provides a rather limited reflection of the latitude dependence. Analyses of foF2(NNT2F2) have shown that, the NNT2F2 model provides good conformity with experimental values in this area, but it is very dependent on the TEC processing method. The latitudinal dependences of foF2 obtained with TEC and polynomial dependence τ(Appr) showed the presence of positive deviations from medians not only during disturbances but also quiet periods, longitudinally at the meridian. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) Land degradation and desertification have recently become a critical problem in Ethiopia. Accordingly, identification of land degradation vulnerable zonation and mapping was conducted in Wabe Shebele River Basin, Ethiopia. Precipitation derived from Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GMP), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST), topography (slope), and pedological properties (i.e., soil depth, soil pH, soil texture, and soil drainage) were used in the current study. NDVI has been considered as the most significant parameter followed by the slope, precipitation and temperature. Geospatial techniques and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach were used to model the land degradation vulnerable index. Validation of the results with google earth image shows the applicability of the model in the study. The result is classified into very highly vulnerable (17.06%), highly vulnerable (15.01%), moderately vulnerable (32.72%), slightly vulnerable (16.40%), and very slightly vulnerable (18.81%) to land degradation. Due to the small rate of precipitation which is vulnerable to evaporation by high temperature in the region, the downstream section of the basis is categorized as highly vulnerable to Land Degradation (LD) and vice versa in the upstream section of the basin. Moreover, the validation using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis shows an area under the ROC curve value of 80.92% which approves the prediction accuracy of the AHP method in assessing and modelling LD vulnerability zone in the study area. The study provides a substantial understanding of the effect of land degradation on sustainable land use management and development in the basin. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) Flood-susceptibility mapping is an important component of flood risk management to control the effects of natural hazards and prevention of injury. We used a remote-sensing and geographic information system (GIS) platform and a machine-learning model to develop a flood susceptibility map of Kangsabati River Basin, India where flash flood is common due to monsoon precipitation with short duration and high intensity. And in this subtropical region, climate change’s impact helps to influence the distribution of rainfall and temperature variation. We tested three models-particle swarm optimization (PSO), an artificial neural network (ANN), and a deep-leaning neural network (DLNN)-and prepared a final flood susceptibility map to classify flood-prone regions in the study area. Environmental, topographical, hydrological, and geological conditions were included in the models, and the final model was selected based on the relations between potentiality of causative factors and flood risk based on multi-collinearity analysis. The model results were validated and evaluated using the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), which is an indicator of the current state of the environment and a value >0.95 implies a greater risk of flash floods. The AUC values for ANN, DLNN, and PSO for training datasets were 0.914, 0.920, and 0.942, respectively. Among these three models, PSO showed the best performance with an AUC value of 0.942. The PSO approach is applicable for flood susceptibility mapping of the eastern part of India, a subtropical region, to allow flood mitigation and help to improve risk management in this region. Given the sensitivity of this forest layer to forest management and global environmental change and the limited knowledge on its long-term dynamics, there is a need for decision support systems that can guide temperate forest managers to optimize their management in terms of understorey outcomes. In this study, using understorey resurvey data collected from across temperate Europe, we developed Generalized Additive Models (GAM) to predict four understorey properties based on forest management and environmental change data, and implemented this model in a web-based tool as a prototype understorey Decision Support System (DSS). Using seventy-two combined climate change, nitrogen(N) deposition and forest management scenarios, applied to two case study regions in Europe, we predicted temperate forest understorey biodiversity dynamics between 2020 and 2050. A sensitivity analysis subsequently allowed to quantify the relative importance of canopy opening, N deposition and climate change on understorey dynamics. Our study showed that, regardless of regions, understorey richness and the proportion of forest specialists generally decreased among most scenarios, but the proportion of woody species and the understorey vegetation total cover increased. Climate warming, N deposition, and increases in canopy openness all influenced understorey dynamics. Climate warming will shift composition towards a selection of forest generalists and woody species, but a less open canopy could mitigate this shift by increasing the proportion of forest specialists. The case studies also showed that these responses can be context-dependent, especially in terms of responses to N deposition.
