[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) This is the first climatological analysis of precipitable water vapor (PWV) from GPS data over Africa. The data reveal significant modulations and variability in PWV over a broad range of temporal scales. GPS PWV estimates are compared to ECMWF reanalysis ERA40. Both datasets show good agreement at the larger scales (seasonal cycle and inter‐annual variability), driven by large scale moisture transport. At intra‐seasonal (15–40 days) and synoptic (3–10 days) scales, strong PWV modulations are observed from GPS, consistently with ECMWF analysis. They are shown to be correlated with convection and the passage of equatorial waves and African Easterly waves. The high‐frequency GPS observations also reveal a significant diurnal cycle in PWV, which magnitude and spectral content depends strongly on geographic location and shows a seasonal modulation. The diurnal cycle of PWV is poorly represented in ERA40 reflecting weaknesses in the water cycle of global circulation models at this timescale. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) The development and validation of an atmospheric correction algorithm designed for the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) with special emphasis on case-2 waters is described. The algorithm is based on inverse modelling of radiative transfer (RT) calculations using artificial neural network (ANN) techniques. The presented correction scheme is implemented as a direct inversion of spectral top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances into spectral remote sensing reflectances at the bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA), with additional output of the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at four wavelengths for validation purposes. The inversion algorithm was applied to 13 MERIS Level 1b data tracks of 2002-2003, covering the optically complex waters of the North and Baltic Sea region. A validation of the retrieved AOTs was performed with coincident in situ automatic sun-sky scanning radiometer measurements of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) from Helgoland Island located in the German Bight. The accuracy of the derived reflectances was validated with concurrent ship-borne reflectance measurements of the SIMBADA hand-held field radiometer. Compared to the MERIS Level2 standard reflectance product generated by the processor versions 3.55, 4.06 and 6.3, the results of the proposed algorithm show a significant improvement in accuracy, especially in the blue part of the spectrum, where the MERIS Level 2 reflectances result in errors up to 122% compared to only 19% with the proposed algorithm. The overall mean errors within the spectral range of 412.5-708.75 nm are calculated to be 46.2% and 18.9% for the MERIS Level2 product and the presented algorithm, respectively. [Termes IGN] nuageRésumé : (Auteur) Satellites provide unique perspectives on aerosol global and regional spatial and temporal distributions, and offer compelling evidence that visibility and air quality are affected by particulate matter transported over long distances. The heights at which emissions are injected into the atmosphere are major factors governing downwind dispersal. In order to better understand the environmental factors determining injection heights of smoke plumes from wildfires, we have developed a prototype system for automatically searching through several years of MISR and MODIS data to locate fires and the associated smoke plumes and to retrieve injection heights and other relevant measurements from them. We are refining this system and assembling a statistical database, aimed at understanding how injection height relates to the fire severity and local weather conditions. In this paper we focus on our working proof-of-concept system that demonstrates how machine-learning and data mining methods aid in processing of massive volumes of satellite data. Automated algorithms for distinguishing smoke from clouds and other aerosols, identifying plumes, and extracting height data are described. Preliminary results are presented from application to MISR and MODIS data collected over North America during the summer of 2004. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) Global positioning system (GPS) data from a dense network have been used for the analysis of the diurnal cycle of water vapor over Marseille, France, during the second intensive observation period (IOP2; 21–26 June 2001) of the Expérience sur Sites pour Contraindre les Modèles de Pollution Atmosphérique et de Transport d’Emission (ESCOMPTE) field experiment. Both tomographic analyses and integrated water vapor (IWV) contents from GPS have been used, in addition to wind profiler data and surface observations. Tomographic analysis of data from the dense GPS network and radiosondes provided the continuous temporal evolution of the vertical distribution of water vapor over the city of Marseille. The city is located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in southeastern France and is often under the influence of sea-breeze effects. Two different layers of breeze circulation are identified: a shallow sea breeze, blowing perpendicular to the local coastline, and a deep sea breeze, induced by the regional temperature gradient between sea and land. The origin of water vapor is shown to be mainly due to the advection of marine moist air by these sea-breeze circulations. However, the diurnal cycle of water vapor over Marseille is strongly influenced by the synoptic situation, which changes during the IOP2 (between a northerly mistral in the early stage of the IOP and an easterly wind at the end). It is shown that vertical profiles from tomographic analyses (combined with wind profiler data) allow for a proper interpretation of the diurnal cycle observed in IWV. Two-dimensional maps of IWV are also shown to complement the description of the horizontal advection of moisture by the different circulation regimes. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Estimation of aerosol loadings is of great importance to the studies on global climate changes. The current Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol estimation algorithm over land is based on the “dark-object” approach, which works only over densely vegetated (“dark”) surfaces. In this study, we develop a new aerosol estimation algorithm that uses the temporal signatures from a sequence of MODIS imagery over land surfaces, particularly “bright” surfaces. The estimated aerosol optical depth is validated by Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements. Case studies indicate that this algorithm can retrieve aerosol optical depths reasonably well from the winter MODIS imagery at seven sites: four sites in the greater Washington, DC area, USA; Beijing City, China; Banizoumbou, Niger, Africa; and Bratts Lake, Canada. The MODIS aerosol estimation algorithm over land (MOD04), however, does not perform well over these non-vegetated surfaces. This new algorithm has the potential to be used for other satellite images that have similar temporal resolutions.
