Software which performs multiple tasks related to aerial photogrammetry and particularized to UAV systems was developed. Specifically, the flight planning and control framework incorporates a robust geometric control that guarantees the effectiveness, precision, and reliability of image acquisition. A real case study was generated to test and validate the flight planning and control strategies developed here. [Termes IGN] SwisstopoRésumé : (auteur) Following the latest developments in Remotely Piloted Airborne Systems (RPAS) industry and attending some of the most prominent fairs related to the field of geomatics one easily recognizes that it is RPAS, which is strongly pushed into the civilian market. It really is of interest, if official authorities like National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) are starting to implement the RPASs technology within their specific data acquisition processes – to establish alternatives to their traditional manned photogrammetric survey flights. The European Spatial Data Research organization (EuroSDR), representing European NMAs and research organizations of currently 17 European states, is following UAV developments since end of 2004, where an ongoing activity was created, to continuously update their members on the developments in this technology. As systems consolidated, new impetus was given to more deeply explore the potential RPAS for national mapping. Today first national mapping agencies have already used RPAS based data for first experiments in mapping. Several NMAs are discussing on the future role of this technology within their agencies. This report will try to give an overview on the current situation on the use of RPAS in European mapping agencies. Based on the input from some selected NMAs, their expectations on RPAS technology, the fields of use they foresee in their country specific surroundings and – exemplarily – first experiences with this type of technology will be presented. Even though the use of RPAS in NMAs is still new, substantial technical and operational benefits become obvious already. With that, the paper will try to give a state-of-the-art report on the current activities and overall acceptance of RPAS technology in European photogrammetric mapping. [Termes IGN] véhicule sans piloteRésumé : (Auteur) This work introduces a Mobile Stereo Mapping System (MSMS) designed for remote operation onboard unmanned vehicles for navigation and rapid collection of 3D spatial data through direct georeferencing and integration of optical and multiple navigation sensors. By avoiding the need for ground control points, the system offers a low-cost mapping solution for both kinematic and static cases, rapid deployments, high data resolutions, and low risk to operators. Position estimation of the camera is based on differential GPS, loosely coupled in a Kalman filter with a low-cost Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Attitude is estimated from gyroscope data, aided by accelerometer and magnetometer data to compensate for gyro drift. Two low-cost consumer digital cameras are calibrated and time-synchronized with the GPS/IMU to provide directly georeferenced stereo imagery. The MSMS determines mapping coordinates using photogrammetric solutions modified for direct georeferencing. A calibration process has been developed for the sensor components and the integrated system itself to determine systematic errors and biases, and to determine the relative geometry of the sensors. Object space accuracies (Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)) in the range of 1/100 at camera-to-object distances of about 30m were achieved using wide baseline overlapping images taken from two separate positions of the stereo-metric MSMS. The system design and the calibration and mapping accuracy of the MSMS are presented and assessed using field testing.
