[Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate target detection and classification in hyperspectral imagery require that the spectral measurements by the imager match as closely as possible the known “true” target as collected under controlled conditions and stored in a target database. Therefore, the effect of the radiation source and the atmosphere must be factored out of the result before detection is attempted. Our objective is to evaluate detection error due to the error in estimating the atmospherics. We apply a range of atmospheric water vapor profiles, corresponding to different relative humidities, to a model-based prediction of the radiative transfer to examine the effect of water vapor on simulated hyperspectral imagery. These profiles are taken from known distribution percentiles as obtained from historic meteorological measurements close to the sites being simulated. We quantify the expected detection error for the adaptive matched filter, as measured by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and the area under the ROC curve, given the range of atmospheric conditions in the historic profile. We discover that, depending on the target, and given the uncertainty as to the true atmospheric conditions, detection rates improve on average across the historic range when we assume the atmospheric profile is at the 35th percentile of atmospheric relative humidity instead of the 50th percentile. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In ground-based GPS meteorology, weighted mean temperature is the key parameter to calculate the conversion factor which will be used to map zenith wet delay to precipitable water vapor. In practical applications, we can hardly obtain the vertical profiles of meteorological parameters over the site, thus cannot use the integration method to calculate weighted mean temperature. In order to exactly calculate weighted mean temperature from a few meteorological parameters, this paper studied the relation between weighted mean temperature and surface temperature, surface water vapor pressure and surface pressure, and determined the relationship between, on the one hand, the weighted mean temperature, and, on the other hand, the surface temperature and surface water vapor pressure. Considering the seasonal and geographic variations in the relationship, we employed the trigonometry functions with an annual cycle and a semi-annual cycle to fit the residuals (seasonal and geographic variations are reflected in the residuals). Through the above work, we finally established the GTm-I model and the PTm-I model with a 2 2.5 (latlon) resolution. Test results show that the two models both show a consistent high accuracy around the globe, which is about 1.0 K superior to the widely used Bevis weighted mean temperature–surface temperature relationship in terms of root mean square error. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose a novel Bayesian procedure to update the probability distribution for a set of possible atmospheric states, once ground measures of temperature, pressure, humidity, and tropospheric delay of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are made. It is based on a representative dataset of matching pairs of reanalysis atmospheric states and ground measures. By applying the basic rules of probability theory and logic inference, a computable expression for the conditional probability of the states given the measures is found. This allows us to select the most plausible atmospheric conditions, consistent with ground observations. Compared with more conventional techniques, the proposed approach has the advantage of always giving a result, even if not all the measures are available. Moreover, it provides the probability distributions of the retrieved quantities, which collapse to the corresponding prior distributions in the worst case of no significant measures. In any case, the final uncertainties are fully quantified, as needed for many meteorological applications, including data assimilation and ensemble forecasts for a numerical weather model. In addition to the theoretical details, a practical example of operational application, using a ten-year dataset on a Mediterranean test site, is also presented. The most probable retrieved atmospheric profiles of water vapor and temperature, as well as the corresponding values of precipitable water, are compared with balloon measurements on such a test site, showing good agreement and a significant improvement when the GNSS delay measure is added. In particular, the precipitable water retrieval turns out at least as accurate as that obtained with conventional approaches. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses real-time monitoring of the precipitable water vapor (PWV) from GNSS measurements and presents some results obtained from 6-month long GNSS PWV experiments using international and domestic GNSS networks. In the real-time GNSS PWV monitoring system a server/client structure is employed to facilitate formation of PWV networks and single-differenced GNSS measurements are utilized to mitigate errors in GNSS satellites’ orbits and clocks. An issue relating to baseline length between the server and clients is discussed in detail and as a result the PWV monitor is configured to perform in two modes depending on the baseline length. The server estimates sequentially the zenith wet delay of the individual stations, which is then converted into the PWV of the stations. We evaluate system performance by comparing the real-time PWV solution with reference solutions including meteorological measurements obtained with radiosondes and deferred-time precision GNSS PWV solutions. Results showed that the standard deviation of difference between the real-time PWV and the reference solutions ranged from 2.1 to 3.4 mm in PWV for a 6-month long comparison, which was improved to 1.4 to 2.9 mm by reducing comparison period to 20 days in winter. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) We can map zenith wet delays onto precipitable water with a conversion factor, but in order to calculate the exact conversion factor, we must precisely calculate its key variable Tm . Yao et al. (J Geod 86:1125–1135, 2012. doi:10.1007/s00190-012-0568-1) established the first generation of global Tm model (GTm-I) with ground-based radiosonde data, but due to the lack of radiosonde data at sea, the model appears to be abnormal in some areas. Given that sea surface temperature varies less than that on land, and the GPT model and the Bevis Tm – Ts relationship are accurate enough to describe the surface temperature and Tm , this paper capitalizes on the GPT model and the Bevis Tm – Ts relationship to provide simulated Tm at sea, as a compensation for the lack of data. Combined with the Tm from radiosonde data, we recalculated the GTm model coefficients. The results show that this method not only improves the accuracy of the GTm model significantly at sea but also improves that on land, making the GTm model more stable and practically applicable.
