[Termes IGN] voie ferréeRésumé : (auteur) SNCF Réseau gère un réseau ferroviaire qui s'étend sur 33 000 kilomètres de lignes, représentant l'un des réseaux les plus denses d'Europe en termes de circulation. Afin d'assurer la sécurité des biens et des personnes, la surveillance de l'ensemble du Réseau Ferré National est un enjeu majeur. La cartographie mobile apparaît comme une solution évidente, offrant une productivité élevée et des conditions de travail idéales d'un point de vue de la sécurité. En effet, le milieu ferroviaire est un environnement à fortes contraintes en terme de sécurité et l'emploi d'une technologie permettant de limiter l'intervention directe du personnel sur les voies est un avantage certain. Cet article présente l'étude de précision qui a été menée sur le scanner laser dynamique acquis par SNCF Réseau à l'été 2013, dans le but de valider -ou non- son utilisation pour la surveillance du réseau à condition qu'il permette d'atteindre la classe de précision de 5 centimètres fixée par le cahier des charges. [Termes IGN] topographieRésumé : (auteur) Mapping with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) typically involves the deployment of ground control points (GCPs) to georeference the images and topographic model. An alternative approach is direct georeferencing, whereby the onboard Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and inertial measurement unit are used without GCPs to locate and orient the data. This study compares the spatial accuracy of these approaches using two nearly identical UAVs. The onboard GNSS is the one difference between them, as one vehicle uses a survey-grade GNSS/RTK receiver (RTK UAV), while the other uses a lower-grade GPS receiver (non-RTK UAV). Field testing was performed at a gravel pit, with all ground measurements and aerial surveying completed on the same day. Three sets of orthoimages and DSMs were produced for comparing spatial accuracies: two sets were created by direct georeferencing images from the RTK UAV and non-RTK UAV and one set was created by using GCPs during the external orientation of the non-RTK UAV images. Spatial accuracy was determined from the horizontal (X,Y) and vertical (Z) residuals and root-mean-square-errors (RMSE) relative to 17 horizontal and 180 vertical check points measured with a GNSS/RTK base station and rover. For the two direct georeferencing datasets, the horizontal and vertical accuracy improved substantially with the survey-grade GNSS/RTK receiver onboard the RTK UAV, effectively reducing the RMSE values in X, Y and Z by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude compared to the lower grade GPS receiver onboard the non-RTK UAV. Importantly, the horizontal accuracy of the RTK UAV data processed via direct georeferencing was equivalent to the horizontal accuracy of the non-RTK UAV data processed with GCPs, but the vertical error of the DSM from the RTK UAV data was 2 to 3 times greater than the DSM from the non-RTK data with GCPs. Overall, results suggest that direct georeferencing with the RTK UAV can achieve horizontal accuracy comparable to that obtained with a network of GCPs, but for topographic measurements requiring the highest achievable accuracy, researchers and practitioners should use GCPs. Because of the georeferencing error of satellite images, block adjustment is the first step of orthomosaic generation over a large area. However, the geometric relationship of the neighboring orbits of the nadir viewing images is not rigid enough. This paper proposes a new rational function model (RFM) block adjustment approach that constrains the tie point elevation to enhance the relative geometric rigidity. By interpolating the elevations of tie points in a digital elevation model (DEM) and estimating the a priori errors of the interpolated elevations, better overall relative accuracy is obtained, and the local optimal solution problem is avoided. By constraining the adjusted model parameters according to the a priori error of RFMs, block adjustment without ground control point (GCP) is performed. By optimal initializing the object-space positions of tie points with multi-backprojection method, the needed iteration times of block adjustment are reduced. The proposed approach is investigated with 46 Ziyuan-3 sensor-corrected images, a 1:50 000 scale DEM, and 586 GCPs. Compared with Teo's approach that constrains the horizontal coordinates and elevations of tie points, the approach in this paper converges much faster when the GCPs are sparse, and meanwhile, the absolute and relative accuracy of the two approaches are almost the same. The result of block adjustment with only four GCPs shows that no accuracy degeneration occurred in the test area and the root-mean-square error of independent check point reaches about 1.5 ground resolutions. Different DEMs and number of tie points are used to investigate whether the block adjustment result is influenced by these factors. The results show that better DEM accuracy and denser tie points do improve the accuracy when the images have large side-sway angles. The proposed approach is also tested with 5118 IKONOS-2 images that cover the southern Europe without GCP. The result shows that the relative mosaicking accuracy is much better than that of Grodecki's approach. Maps, as external representations of the environment offer intuitive ways to extend the capacities of the human cognitive systems. Operations such as planning a route can be performed on maps instead of in the environment. Question of how to design maps that support cognitive processes such as wayfinding in novel environments have been discussed in several disciplines. The research reported here addresses the question of how map alignment and the presence of landmarks in maps interact during wayfinding. For the purpose of systematically analyzing the relationship between map alignment and landmark presence, nine virtual environments were designed. Routes learned from maps with different alignments and different numbers of landmarks present at decision points were used. While generally landmarks are assumed to foster wayfinding performance, our results indicate that misaligned maps can cancel out positive effects obtained through landmarks. Landmarks within an environment are of great benefit to these navigational tasks, but in large rural environments such landmarks may be sparse. It has been shown that landmarks need not be purely visual and that a change in context for a feature can make it become a landmark against its surroundings (such as being provided with significant meaning). Such meaning could be added through personal experience or by informing the observer via some form of communication. To investigate the effects of providing such contextual information on navigational performance, experiments were conducted in a large rural virtual environment where the delivery method of the information was varied between onscreen and PDA display. Users were instructed to perform a route tracing navigation task. In some instances users were presented with textual information about specific locations within the environment which appeared when they were in the vicinity of the location. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed, with results indicating that although the actual performance in the task was not significantly improved, users felt that their performance was better and the task easier when they were presented with the contextual information.
