[Termes descripteurs IGN] réseau métropolitainRésumé : (Auteur) Schematic maps are simplified representations of line networks, aiming to help people quickly and accurately perform route planning and orientation tasks. The automated generation of such maps is generally treated as an optimization problem. Most researchers prefer to optimize network layouts and name labels separately, because optimizing them simultaneously is still intractable. It is found that optimizing network layouts is extensively studied, while optimizing name labels is rarely considered. In the optimization of name labels, constraints can be established with rules from cartographic experts, literature (e.g., specification and technical documents), and/or existing maps. However, some rules from experts and literature cannot be explicitly and mathematically expressed. This study aims to develop an automated labeling method with rules from existing maps. We first acquire the rules (i.e., the potential positions and the preferences of these positions) from some existing schematic maps and then integrate them into an optimization algorithm. Experimental evaluation is conducted by a questionnaire in terms of “ease level of finding name labels,” “congestion level,” and “satisfaction level” using Tianjin and Hong Kong metro schematic maps and the labels of our method. The results show that the proposed method can automatically generate effective labels. Tactile maps are created manually and printed by specialists, and it takes a large amount of time to create a new one, which prevents using them on demand for everyday use. As a consequence, researchers and cartographers try to automate this creation process, but the existing automated derivation processes do not include generalization or advanced stylization steps, which limits their effectiveness. This paper reports first experiments to include such complex automated cartography processes to provide on-demand tactile maps for visually impaired people. These first experiments were more intended to raise real research issues than solve them, and the paper discusses these issues in a research agenda to achieve automatically derived tactile maps. [Termes descripteurs IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Images from archival aerial photogrammetric surveys are a unique and relatively unexplored means to chronicle 3D land-cover changes occurred since the mid20th century. They provide a relatively dense temporal sampling of the territories with very high spatial resolution. Thus, they offer time series data which can answer to a large variety of long-term environmental monitoring studies. Besides, they are generally stereoscopic surveys, making it possible to derive 3D information (Digital Surface Models). In recent years, they have often been digitized, making them more suitable to be considered in automatic analyses processes. For instance, IGN (the French national mapping agency) has digitized its archival aerial photogrammetric surveys: images can be downloaded from a web service (http://remonterletemps.ign.fr/) Thus, archival aerial photogrammetric surveys appear as being a powerful remote sensing data source to study land use/cover evolution over the last century. However, several difficulties have to be faced to be able to use them in automatic analysis processes. A first bottleneck for accurate comparison between epochs is their fine georeferencing. Such information has generally been lost and must be retrieved. No fully automatic method has been proposed yet and existing studies are rather limited in terms of area and number of dates. State-of-the-art shows that one major challenge is the identification of ground references: cartographic coordinates and their position in the archival images. This task is often manually performed, and extremely time-consuming. This contribution proposes to use a photogrammetric approach, and states that the 3D information that can be computed is the key to full automation. Its original idea lies in a the use of the coarse absolute image orientation from existing metadata to derive coarse Digital Surface Model (DSM) and orthoimage that are then used to improve absolute image orientation. It only relies on a recent orthoimage+DSM, used as master reference for all epochs. The coarse orthoimage, compared with such a reference, allows the identification of dense ground references and the coarse DSM provides their position in the archival images. A new iteration of the georeferencing process can then be done using these ground references. At the end, images orientation is retrieved and orthoimages as well as digital surface models can be computed for each epoch. Another issue is the radiometric equalization of images (to remove atmospheric as well as vignetting effects), in order to obtain a homogeneous mosaic suitable with automatic classification processes. Last but not least, surveys available on a study area can exhibit very different characteristics: survey pattern, focal, spatial resolution, modality (panchromatic, color, infrared...). Planimetric and altimetric accuracies of derived products depend on these characteristics. Thus, automatic change detection and analysis processes have to cope with these uncertainties. Cloud computing, due to its capabilities to deliver on‐demand computing resources, has been embraced to develop and deploy interactive and scalable remote geovisualization applications. However, current cloud computing frameworks do not offer a versatile resource management scheme that is readily applicable for online remote visualization services, which usually require maintaining a satisfactory service level over time under dynamic workloads. To address this gap, we propose an automatic cloud resource management approach based on a bi‐level scheduling and horizontal scaling scheme to exploit cloud resources efficiently. At the lower level, a dynamic task‐scheduling scheme using collaborative filtering techniques is proposed to allocate virtual cloud resources to execute sub‐tasks. The scheduling scheme considers spatio‐temporal patterns presented in visualization views. At the upper level, reinforcement learning is adopted to perform resource auto‐scaling based on a reward function that integrates three different facets, namely: time cost, resource cost, and service stability. The original reinforcement learning algorithm is improved in two main aspects: (1) considering the delay of resource provisioning that is common in cloud environments; and (2) using online Gaussian estimation to estimate Q values. Task scheduling and auto‐scaling interact with each other and are integrated to deliver a comprehensive and responsive resource management solution. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms several existing cloud resource management methods. The proposed approach is also applicable for other interactive visualization applications, which have similar workload characteristics and performance requirements as interactive remote geovisualization.
