[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (auteur) With the launch of Sentinel-2 new opportunities for large scale urban mapping arise. However, the spectral information embedded in the Sentinel-2 20 m spatial resolution bands cannot yet be fully explored in heterogeneous urban landscapes. The 20 m image pixels are often composed of different land covers, resulting in a difficult to interpret mixed pixel spectrum. Here, we propose an unmixing-based image fusion algorithm (UnFuSen2) that self-adapts to the spectral variability of varying land covers and improves the image fusion accuracy by constraining the unmixing equations on the basis of spectral mixing models and the correlation between spectral bands of coarse and fine spatial resolution, respectively. When compared to alternative state-of-the-art downscaling methods UnFuSen2 consistently showed the highest accuracy when applied across test sites in three different European cities (RMSEUnFuSen2 = 203 vs RMSEalternatives = [252, 337]). In a next step, we applied Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) on the downscaled Sentinel-2 image cube (i.e. ten 10 m bands) to generate subpixel urban land cover fractions. We compared our MESMA results against the traditional MESMA output as applied on the original Sentinel-2 image cube (i.e. four 10 m bands and six 20 m bands) and tested its robustness against reference data obtained over all three study sites. Results revealed an average decrease in RMSE of respectively 18% and 8% for impervious surface and vegetation fractions when our approach was compared to the traditional MESMA outcomes. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The utility of sheer volumes of very high spatial resolution (VHSR) commercial imagery in mapping the Arctic region is new and actively evolving. Commercial satellite sensors typically record image data in low-resolution multispectral (MS) and high-resolution panchromatic (PAN) mode. Spatial resolution is needed to accurately describe feature shapes and textural patterns, such as ice-wedge polygons (IWPs) that are rapidly transforming surface features due to degrading permafrost, while spectral resolution allows capturing of land-use and land-cover types. Data fusion, the process of combining PAN and MS images with complementary characteristics often serves as an integral component of remote sensing mapping workflows. The fusion process generates spectral and spatial artifacts that may affect the classification accuracies of subsequent automated image analysis algorithms, such as deep learning (DL) convolutional neural nets (CNN). We employed a detailed multidimensional assessment to understand the performances of an array of eight application-oriented data fusion algorithms when applied to VHSR image scenes for DLCNN-based mapping of ice-wedge polygons. Our findings revealed the scene dependency of data fusion algorithms and emphasized the need for careful selection of the proper algorithm. Results suggested that the fusion algorithms that preserve spatial character of original PAN imagery favor the DLCNN model performances. The choice of fusion approach needs to be considered of equal importance to the required training dataset for successful applications using DLCNN on VHRS imagery in order to enable an accurate mapping effort of permafrost thaw across the Arctic region. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, a novel building change detection approach is proposed using statistical region merging (SRM) and a shape context similarity model for Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. First, digital surface models (DSMs) are generated from LiDAR acquired at two different epochs, and the difference data D-DSM is created by difference processing. Second, to reduce the noise and registration error of the pixel-based method, the SRM algorithm is applied to segment the D-DSM, and multi-scale segmentation results are obtained under different scale values. Then, the shape context similarity model is used to calculate the shape similarity between the segmented objects and the buildings. Finally, the refined building change map is produced by the k-means clustering method based on shape context similarity and area-to-length ratio. The experimental results indicated that the proposed method could effectively improve the accuracy of building change detection compared with some popular change detection methods. [Termes IGN] R (langage)Résumé : (Auteur) The objective of this article is to evaluate the performance of three pan‐sharpening algorithms (high‐pass filter, principal component analysis and Gram–Schmidt) to increase the spatial resolution of five types of multispectral images and to evaluate the results in terms of color, coherence and spatial sharpness, both qualitatively and quantitatively. A secondary objective is to present an implementation of the aforementioned pan‐sharpening techniques within the open source software R. From a qualitative point of view, pan‐sharpening of images with a high spatial resolution ratio give better results than those whose spatial resolution ratio is 2. According to the quantitative evaluation, there is no pan‐sharpening methodology that obtains optimal results simultaneously for all types of images used. The results of the spectral and spatial ERGAS index vary for four out of the five types of images analyzed. The results show that none of the methods implemented in this work can be considered a priori better than the others. At the same time, this work indicates the importance of both qualitative and quantitative assessment. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (auteur) In this study, we compared the performance of tree-based classification algorithms – Random Forest (RF), Rotation Forest (RotF), J48, The Alternating Decision Tree (ADTree), Forest by Penalising Attributes (Forest PA), Logical Analysis of Data Algorithm (LADTree) and Functional Trees (FT) – for mapping burned forest areas within the Mediterranean region in Turkey. Object-based image analysis (OBIA) was performed to pan-sharpened the Landsat 8 images. Four different burned areas, namely Kumluca, Adrasan, Anamur, and Alanya, were used as study areas. Kumluca, Anamur, and Alanya regions were used as training areas, and Adrasan region was used as the test area. Obtained results were evaluated with confusion matrix and statistically significant analysis. According to the results, FT and RotF produced more accurate results than other algorithms. Also, the results obtained with these algorithms are statistically significant.
