[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (auteur) In mountainous areas, the landcover extraction out of orthoimages through semi-automatic classification is limited by several factors (such as large shadow areas, radiometric similarities between different themes, inhomogeneous radiometry among regions of the same class...). Image information is not sufficient to separate the different classes. Nevertheless, good results can be obtained by dividing each landcover class “c” into two subclasses “c in shadow” / “c not in shadow” and introducing external information in the classification process. This information can be an older or more generalized database, geographic knowledge concerning the links between relief and landcover, or prior information concerning shadows. This external knowledge is then interpreted in terms of a priori probabilities and merged with radiometric information from the image in a MAP per region classification process. Besides, the results can also be improved by the use of combinations of channels calculated from the initial image. [Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) This study examined the complementarity of spaceborne radar and optical data for surface feature identification. RADARSAT data sets were assessed independently and in combination with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) multispectral data. The primary methodology was spectral signature extraction and the application of a statistical decision rule to classify the surface features for a site near Kericho, Kenya. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by digital integration and comparison to reference information derived from field visitation. Speckle filtering was a great improvement over the poor results achieved with the unfiltered, original radar data but still not adequate for accurate land cover classification. The extraction and use of Variance texture measures was found to be very advantageous. The overall results were not significant improvements over speckle removal (6 % increase) but several individual classes, forest and urban, had excellent results with texture. Combinations of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The highest overall accuracy was achieved with a merger that included the best individual texture image and six reflectance bands of the TM data. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, was effective in managing a very complex, almost infinite set of analysis possibilities. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) The wavelet-based scheme for the fusion of multispectral (MS) and panchromatic (PAN) imagery has become quite popular due to its ability to preserve the spectral fidelity of the MS imagery while improving its spatial quality. This is important if the resultant imagery is used for automatic classification. Wavelet-based fusion results depend on the number of decomposition levels applied in the wavelet transform. Too few decomposition levels result in poor spatial quality fused images. On the other hand, too many levels reduce the spectral similarity between the original MS and the pan-sharpened images. If the shift-invariant wavelet transform is applied, each excessive decomposition level results in a large computational penalty. Thus, the choice of the number of decomposition levels is significant. In this paper, PAN and MS image pairs with different resolution ratios were fused using the shift-invariant wavelet transform, and the optimal decomposition levels were determined for each resolution ratio. In general, it can be said that the fusion of images with larger resolution ratios requires a higher number of decomposition levels. This paper provides the practitioner an understanding of the tradeoffs associated with the computational demand and the spatial and spectral quality of the wavelet-based fusion algorithm as a function of the number of decomposition levels. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper aims at demonstrating the possibility of merging data from various medium-resolution spaceborne sensors to produce a consistent time series of surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and albedo products. The spectral, directional, temporal, and spatial aspects of the multisensor fusion are presented. Emphasis is then given on the spectral normalization for the fusion of Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) data with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and VEGETATION (VGT) data. Two methods are evaluated: a simple statistical method, which relies on a linear regression using all the available spectral bands, and a more innovative method called the spectral mode method, which is based on the restitution of the surface spectral signature by a combination of universal spectral functions. Analysis with Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) hyperspectral data and satellite products reveals that the spectral mode method is more efficient. This approach is used to merge top-of-canopy bidirectional reflectances from MERIS and VGT for the restitution of BRDF and albedo over a subset of West Africa. Compared to the products obtained with MERIS alone, the fusion with VGT demonstrates an improvement of the spatial coverage and a reduction of product uncertainty by about a third. [Termes IGN] UltraCamRésumé : (Auteur) Within the paper a comparative quantification of the spatial image resolution for large-format digital airborne cameras will be presented. For this purpose, imagery of the Leica ADS40, the Intergraph Z/I-imaging DMC and the Vexcel UltraCamD were examined. The respective spatial resolutions are represented by means of the point spread function, which can be measured easily and reliably at image edges. Thus, images of test patterns like a Siemens star were used. In addition to the evaluation of the original images as they are provided by the camera systems, the potential benefit of a resolution improvement by image restoration is demonstrated. Therefore, a linear restoring finite impulse response filter is applied. Usually, colour image acquisition by digital aerial camera systems is realised by combining data from the multi-spectral module with higher resolution panchromatic imagery. The quality of this pan-sharpening process is presented in the final part of the paper. For this purpose, the potential degradation of colour information by this process was quantified for the three tested camera systems in addition to the resolution measurements.
