[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Pansharpening is the process of fusing a high-resolution panchromatic image and a low-spatial-resolution multispectral image to yield a high-spatial-resolution multispectral image. This is a typical ill-posed inverse problem, and in the past two decades, many methods have been proposed to solve it. Still, there is no general consensus on the best way to quantitatively evaluate the spectral and spatial quality of the fused image. In this paper, we compare the two most widely used and accepted methods for quality evaluation. The first method is the verification of the synthesis property which states that the fused image should be as identical as possible to the multispectral image that the sensor would observe at a higher resolution. This is impossible to verify unless the observed images are spatially degraded so that the original observed multispectral image can be used as reference. The second method is to use metrics that do not use a reference, such as the quality no reference (QNR) metrics. However, there is another property, i.e., the consistency property, which states that the fused image reduced to the resolution of the original multispectral image should be as identical to the original image as possible. This has generally been considered a necessary condition that does not have to imply correct fusion. Using real WorldView-2 and QuickBird data and a total of 18 component substitution and multiresolution analysis methods, we demonstrate that the consistency property can indeed be used to give reliable assessment of the relative performance of pansharpening methods and is superior to using the QNR metrics. [Termes IGN] TanzanieRésumé : (auteur) Quantification of forest degradation in monitoring and reporting as well as in historic baselines is among the most challenging tasks in national REDD+ strategies. However, a recently introduced option is to base monitoring systems on subnational conditions such as prevalent degradation activities. In Tanzania, charcoal production is considered a major cause of forest degradation, but is challenging to quantify due to sub-canopy biomass loss, remote production sites and illegal trade. We studied two charcoal production sites in dry Miombo woodland representing open woodland conditions near human settlements and remote forest with nearly closed canopies. Supervised classification and adaptive thresholding were applied on a pansharpened QuickBird (QB) image to detect kiln burn marks (KBMs). Supervised classification showed reasonable detection accuracy in the remote forest site only, while adaptive thresholding was found acceptable at both locations. We used supervised classification and manual digitizing for KBM delineation and found acceptable delineation accuracy at both sites with RMSEs of 25–32% compared to ground measurements. Regression of charcoal production on KBM area delineated from QB resulted in R2s of 0.86–0.88 with cross-validation RMSE ranging from 2.22 to 2.29 Mg charcoal per kiln. This study demonstrates, how locally calibrated remote sensing techniques may be used to identify and delineate charcoal production sites for estimation of charcoal production and associated extraction of woody biomass. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Among others, the wavelet-based pansharpening approach tries to enhance the resolution of the multispectral (MS) image by injection of spatial details extracted from the high-resolution panchromatic (PAN) image. The problem is presented as follows, the inputs are a coarse-resolution MS image and a high-resolution detail image provided from the PAN image; therefore, one would think that the wavelet reconstruction allows combining approximations and details to construct the high-resolution MS image. However, the wavelet transform (WT) assumes that details and approximations are calculated using the same wavelet decomposition. Now, in the pansharpening case, the MS low-resolution image is assumed to be aliased and blurred due to the imaging system modulation transfer function (MTF) that is approximated as a specific low-pass filter. Meanwhile, there are no constraints about details that can be extracted from PAN using discrete WT (DWT). Approximation and details are not any more orthogonal as needed in the reconstruct of the MS high-resolution image based on DWT. For that, we propose in this paper a new fusion schema [coupled multiresolution decomposition model (CMD)] allowing the reconstruction of a high-resolution MS given its approximation and details obtained by MTF-tailored downsampling and wavelet decomposition, respectively. For validation, CMD is applied to Pléiades, GeoEye-1, and SPOT 6 images. Compared to other approaches [i.e., Gram-Schmidt (GS) adaptive, GS mode 2 (GS2), “À trous' WT (AWT), generalized Laplacian pyramid (GLP), DWT, and PCI Geomatics software algorithm], our method performs generally better. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Pansharpening aims at fusing a multispectral and a panchromatic image, featuring the result of the processing with the spectral resolution of the former and the spatial resolution of the latter. In the last decades, many algorithms addressing this task have been presented in the literature. However, the lack of universally recognized evaluation criteria, available image data sets for benchmarking, and standardized implementations of the algorithms makes a thorough evaluation and comparison of the different pansharpening techniques difficult to achieve. In this paper, the authors attempt to fill this gap by providing a critical description and extensive comparisons of some of the main state-of-the-art pansharpening methods. In greater details, several pansharpening algorithms belonging to the component substitution or multiresolution analysis families are considered. Such techniques are evaluated through the two main protocols for the assessment of pansharpening results, i.e., based on the full- and reduced-resolution validations. Five data sets acquired by different satellites allow for a detailed comparison of the algorithms, characterization of their performances with respect to the different instruments, and consistency of the two validation procedures. In addition, the implementation of all the pansharpening techniques considered in this paper and the framework used for running the simulations, comprising the two validation procedures and the main assessment indexes, are collected in a MATLAB toolbox that is made available to the community. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (auteur) Building detection from geospatial optical images has been a popular topic of research for the last twenty years and in particular with the emergence of very high resolution satellites. Existing methods exhibit various flaws and prevent them from being efficient at large scales of space and time: they are context-dependent, require a tedious parameter tuning or several data sources. In this paper, we propose a fully automatic method that alleviates some of these issues by combining the strengths of bottom-up and top-down approaches, i.e., of both classification and pattern recognition algorithms. This allows to correctly detect the objects by geometric prior knowledge while finely delineating their borders and preserving their shapes. The method is evaluated over a complex area of more than 230 buildings using a 0.5 m multispectral pansharpened Pleiades image.
