[Termes IGN] universitéRésumé : (éditeur) This collection amplifies the experiences of some of the world’s young people who are working to address SDGs using geospatial technologies and multi-national collaboration. Authors from every region of the world who have emerged as leaders in the YouthMappers movement share their perspectives and knowledge in an accessible and peer-friendly format. YouthMappers are university students who create and use open mapping for development and humanitarian purposes. Their work leverages digital innovations - both geospatial platforms and communications technologies - to answer the call for leadership to address sustainability challenges. The book conveys a sense of robust knowledge emerging from formal studies or informal academic experiences - in the first-person voices of students and recent graduates who are at the forefront of creating a new map of the world. YouthMappers use OpenStreetMap as the foundational sharing mechanism for creating data together. Authors impart the way they are learning about themselves, about each other, about the world. They are developing technology skills, and simultaneously teaching the rest of the world about the potential contributions of a highly connected generation of emerging world leaders for the SDGs. The book is timely, in that it captures a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the YouthMappers movement’s ability to share emerging expertise, and one that coincides with a pivotal moment in the geopolitical history of planet earth whose inhabitants need to hear from them. Most volumes that cover the topic of sustainability in terms of youth development are written by non-youth authors. Moreover, most are written by non-majoritarian, entrenched academic scholars. This book instead puts forward the diverse voices of students and recent graduates in countries where YouthMappers works, all over the world. Authors cover topics that range from water, agriculture, food, to waste, education, gender, climate action and disasters from their own eyes in working with data, mapping, and humanitarian action, often working across national boundaries and across continents. To inspire readers with their insights, the chapters are mapped to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways that connect a youth agenda to a global agenda. With a preface written by Carrie Stokes, Chief Geographer and GeoCenter Director, United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This is an open access book. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (auteur) Coarse resolution sensors are not very sensitive at detecting small fire patches, making current estimations of global burned areas (BA) very conservative. Using medium or high-resolution sensors to generate BA products becomes then a priority, particularly in areas where fires tend to be small and frequent. Building on previous work that developed a small fire dataset (SFD) for Sub-Saharan Africa for 2016, this paper presents a new version of the dataset for 2019 using the two Sentinel-2 satellites (A and B) and VIIRS active fires. Total estimated BA was 4.8 Mkm2. This value was much higher than estimations from two global, coarser-spatial resolution BA products based on MODIS data for the same area and period: 80 % greater than estimates from FireCCI51 (based on MODIS 250 m bands) and 120 % larger than MCD64A1 (based on MODIS 500 m bands). The main differences were observed in those months with higher fire occurrence (November to January for the Northern Hemisphere regions and June to September for the Southern Hemisphere ones). Accuracy assessment of the SFD product was based on a novel sampling strategy designed to obtain independent fire reference perimeters. Validation results showed remarkable high accuracy values comparing to existing global BA products. Overall omission errors (OE) were estimated as 8.5 %, commission errors (CE) as 15.0 %, with a Dice Coefficient of 87.7 %. All of these estimations implied significant improvements over the global, coarser spatial resolution BA products (OE > 50 % and CE > 20 % for the same area and period), as well as over the previous SFD product for 2016 of the same area, generated from a single Sentinel-2 satellite and MODIS active fires (OE = 26.5 % and CE = 19.3 %). Temporal accuracies greatly increased as well with the new product, with 92.5 % of fires detected within the first 10 days of occurrence. [Termes IGN] teneur verticale totale en électronsRésumé : (auteur) This manuscript explores the divergence of the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) estimated from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements using global, regional, and International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) models over low to high latitude regions during various magnetic activity. The VTEC is estimated using a territorial network consisting of 7 GNSS stations in Egypt and 10 GNSS stations from the International GNSS Service (IGS) Global network. The impact of magnetic activity on VTEC is investigated. Due to the deficiency of IGS receivers in north Africa and the shortage of GNSS measurements, an extra high interpolation is done to cover the deficit of data over North Africa. A MATLAB code was created to produce VTEC maps for Egypt utilizing a territorial network contrasted with global maps of VTEC, which are delivered by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). Thus we can have genuine VTEC maps estimated from actual GNSS measurements over any region of North Africa. A Spherical Harmonics Expansion (SHE) equation was modelled using MATLAB and called Local VTEC Model (LVTECM) to estimate VTEC values using observations of dual-frequency GNSS receivers. The VTEC calculated from GNSS measurement using LVTECM is compared with CODE VTEC results and IRI-2016 VTEC model results. The analysis of outcomes demonstrates a good convergence between VTEC from CODE and estimated from LVTECM. A strong correlation between LVTECM and CODE reaches about 96 % and 92 % in high and low magnetic activity, respectively. The most extreme contrasts are found to be 2.5 TECu and 1.3 TECu at high and low magnetic activity, respectively. The maximum discrepancies between LVTECM and IRI-2016 are 9.7 TECu and 2.3 TECu at a high and low magnetic activity. Variation in VTEC due to magnetic activity ranges from 1–5 TECu in moderate magnetic activity. The estimated VTEC from the regional network shows a 95 % correlation between the estimated VTEC from LVTECM and CODE with a maximum difference of 5.9 TECu.
