For this purpose, Hyperion, ALI, IKONOS, and ETM+ data were acquired for southern Cameroon, a region considered to be a representative area for tropical moist evergreen and semideciduous forests. Field data, collected in near-real time to coincide with satellite sensor overpass, were used to (1) quantify and model the biomass of tree, shrub, and weed species; and (2) characterize forest land use/land cover (LULC) classes. The study established that even the most advanced broadband sensors (i.e., ETM+, IKONOS, and ALI) had serious limitations in modeling biomass and in classifying forest LULC classes. The broadband models explained only 13-60% of the variability in biomass across primary forests, secondary forests, and fallows. The overall accuracies were between 42% and 51% for classifying nine complex rainforest LULC classes using the broadband data of these sensors. Within individual vegetation types (e.g., primary or secondary forest), the overall accuracies increased slightly, but followed a similar trend. Among the broadband sensors, ALI sensor performed better than the IKONOS and ETM+ sensors. When compared to the three broadband sensors, Hyperion narrowband data produced (1) models that explained 36-83% more of the variability in rainforest biomass, and (2) LULC classifications with 45-52% higher overall accuracies. Twenty-three Hyperion narrowbands that were most sensitive in modeling forest biomass and in classifying forest LULC classes were identified and discussed. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) A study of the active Mount Cameroon volcano, located south west along the Cameroon Volcanic Line, was carried out during the 1999 volcanic eruption, using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) imagery. It investigated geologic deformations expressed as faults, cracks and lineaments resulting from the eruption. Various image processing techniques were tested and compared in order to detect the most effective output. Principal Component Analysis was found to be useful to determine the extent of deformations caused during the 1999 volcanic eruptions. Landsat ETM revealed the formation of faults and lineaments with proximity to eruption vents. The interpretation obtained from satellite imagery was cross checked with field and ground truthing data. This paper identifies the dimensions and orientations of the newly formed geologic features. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) Surface roughness is a key parameter for computing the emissions and for simulating the atmospheric cycle of mineral dust. However its assessment on the basis of field measurements from source areas scattered round the globe requires much effort. Here we investigate the retrieval of the aerodynamic roughness length of and areas using surface bi-directional reflectance products derived from passive multi-directional measurements in the solar spectrum of the POlarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) sensor. The so-called protrusion coefficient (PC) of the surface derived from the POLDER bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is well suited to estimate surface roughness. From an appropriate selection of POLDER data, a composite PC dataset has been established over the Sahara and the Arabian Peninsula. We have investigated the relationship between aerodynamic roughness length and PC, and have derived a statistically significant empirical relationship between these two parameters. This relationship is applied to the POLDER-derived PC to map the aerodynamic roughness length of and areas in northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula at the spatial resolution of POLDER (- 1/16). When degrading these data for global models, we show that the information is essentially preserved at coarser resolutions up to . This map of roughness length derived from the POLDER instrument, and a corresponding map derived from a geomorphologic classification, have been tested by comparing the predicted dust event frequencies obtained using them to dust indices (IDDI) derived from Meteosat IR observations over the Sahara desert. The agreement using the POLDER derived roughness length is at least as good as using the map of roughness length derived from the geomorphologic approach. Our results show promising new prospects for regional and global scale simulations of mineral dust emissions from and regions.
