[Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) We present an overall analysis of the recent seismic activity occurred in the Adriatic Sea region, a strongly debated sector of the Mediterranean area, where several authors have proposed different models of plate configuration and kinematics. In the past, seismic investigations of this marine area have been strongly hampered by non-optimal network geometries, but data quality increase and recent methodological improvements lay the groundwork to attempt more accurate analyses including proper evaluations of result reliability. On these grounds, we investigated the seismic activity of the last decades by means of new hypocenter locations, waveform inversion focal mechanisms and seismogenic stress fields. We used the Bayloc non-linear probabilistic algorithm to compute hypocenter locations for the most relevant seismic sequences by carefully evaluating location quality and seismolineaments reliability. We also provided an updated database of waveform inversion focal mechanisms including original solutions estimated by applying the waveform inversion method Cut And Paste and data available from official catalogs. Then, focal mechanism solutions have been used to estimate seismogenic stress fields through different inversion algorithms. Seismic results indicate a relevant degree of fragmentation and different patterns of deformation in the Central Adriatic region. In particular, our analyses depicted two NW-SE oriented, adjacent volumes: (i) a pure compressive domain with NNE-trending axis of maximum compression characterizes the northeastern volume where the seismic activity occurs on W-to-NW oriented seismic sources; (ii) a transpressive domain with NW-trending axis of maximum compression characterizes the southwestern sector where thrust faulting preferentially occurs on ENE-to-NE oriented planes and strike-slip faulting on E-W ones. Joint evaluation of seismic findings of the present study and kinematic models proposed in the literature indicates just in the Central Adriatic region the presence of a broad deformation zone, accommodating a still evolving fragmentation of the Adriatic domain in two blocks rotating in opposite directions. On these grounds, the obtained results not only furnish new seismological evidence supporting the "two-blocks model" proposed by previous authors, but they also provide additional constraints, useful for better understanding and modeling the seismotectonic processes occurring in the Adriatic region. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) Controversy surrounds the reported dry season greening of the Central Amazon forests based on the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). As the solar zenith angle decreases during the dry season, it affects the sub-pixel shade content and artificially increases Near-infrared (NIR) reflectance and EVI. MODIS' coarse resolution also creates a challenge for cloud and terrain filtering. To reduce these artifacts and then validate MODIS seasonal spectral patterns we use 16 years of 1 km resolution MODIS-MAIAC (Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction) images, corrected to a nadir view and 45° solar zenith angle, together with an improved cloud filter. Then we show that the 30 m Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) surface reflectance over two Landsat scenes provides independent evidence supporting the MODIS-MAIAC seasonality for EVI, NIR, and GCC (an additional important vegetation index, green chromatic coordinate). Our empirical method for controlling for sun-sensor geometry effects in Landsat scenes encompasses the use of seasonally distinct images that have similar solar zenith angles and cloud-free pixels on flat uplands having the same phase angle. We extended this validation to nine Amazon sub-basins comprising ∼546 Landsat-8 images. Our study shows that the dry-season green-up pattern observed by MODIS is corroborated by Landsat-8, and is independent of satellite data artifacts. To investigate the mechanisms driving these seasonal changes we further used Central Amazon tower-mounted RGB cameras providing a 4-year record at the Amazon Tall Tower (ATTO, 2°8′36″S, 59°0′2″W) and a 7-year record at the Manaus k34 tower (2°36′33″ S, 60°12′33″W) to obtain monthly upper canopy green leaf cover (a proxy for Leaf Area Index - LAI) and monthly leaf age class abundances (based on the age since leaf flushing, by crown). These were compared to seasonal patterns of GCC and EVI in small MODIS-MAIAC windows centered on each tower. MODIS-MAIAC GCC was positively correlated with newly flushed leaves (R2 = 0.76 and 0.44 at ATTO and k34, respectively). EVI correlated strongly with the abundance of mature leaves (R2 = 0.82 and 0.80) but was poorly correlated with LAI (R2 = 0.20 and 0.41, respectively). Therefore, seasonal spectral patterns in the Central Amazon are likely controlled by leaf age variation, not quantity of leaf area. Authors from every region of the world who have emerged as leaders in the YouthMappers movement share their perspectives and knowledge in an accessible and peer-friendly format. YouthMappers are university students who create and use open mapping for development and humanitarian purposes. Their work leverages digital innovations - both geospatial platforms and communications technologies - to answer the call for leadership to address sustainability challenges. The book conveys a sense of robust knowledge emerging from formal studies or informal academic experiences - in the first-person voices of students and recent graduates who are at the forefront of creating a new map of the world. YouthMappers use OpenStreetMap as the foundational sharing mechanism for creating data together. Authors impart the way they are learning about themselves, about each other, about the world. They are developing technology skills, and simultaneously teaching the rest of the world about the potential contributions of a highly connected generation of emerging world leaders for the SDGs. The book is timely, in that it captures a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the YouthMappers movement’s ability to share emerging expertise, and one that coincides with a pivotal moment in the geopolitical history of planet earth whose inhabitants need to hear from them. Most volumes that cover the topic of sustainability in terms of youth development are written by non-youth authors. Moreover, most are written by non-majoritarian, entrenched academic scholars. This book instead puts forward the diverse voices of students and recent graduates in countries where YouthMappers works, all over the world. Authors cover topics that range from water, agriculture, food, to waste, education, gender, climate action and disasters from their own eyes in working with data, mapping, and humanitarian action, often working across national boundaries and across continents. To inspire readers with their insights, the chapters are mapped to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ways that connect a youth agenda to a global agenda. [Termes IGN] teneur intégrée en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) Recent studies using convection-permitting (CP) climate simulations have demonstrated a step-change in the representation of heavy rainfall and rainfall characteristics (frequency-intensity) compared to coarser resolution Global and Regional climate models. The goal of this study is to better understand what explains the weaker frequency of precipitation in the CP ensemble by assessing the triggering process of precipitation in the different ensembles of regional climate simulations available over Europe. We focus on the statistical relationship between tropospheric temperature, humidity and precipitation to understand how the frequency of precipitation over Europe and the Mediterranean is impacted by model resolution and the representation of convection (parameterized vs. explicit). We employ a multi-model data-set with three different resolutions (0.44°, 0.11° and 0.0275°) produced in the context of the MED-CORDEX, EURO-CORDEX and the CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study "Convective Phenomena over Europe and the Mediterranean" (FPSCONV). The multi-variate approach is applied to all model ensembles, and to several surface stations where the integrated water vapor (IWV) is derived from Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. The results show that all model ensembles capture the temperature dependence of the critical value of IWV (IWVcv), above which an increase in precipitation frequency occurs, but the differences between the models in terms of the value of IWVcv, and the probability of its being exceeded, can be large at higher temperatures. The lower frequency of precipitation in convection-permitting simulations is not only explained by higher temperatures but also by a higher IWVcv necessary to trigger precipitation at similar temperatures, and a lower probability to exceed this critical value. The spread between models in simulating IWVcv and the probability of exceeding IWVcv is reduced over land in the ensemble of models with explicit convection, especially at high temperatures, when the convective fraction of total precipitation becomes more important and the influence of the representation of entrainment in models thus becomes more important. Over lowlands, both model resolution and convection representation affect precipitation triggering while over mountainous areas, resolution has the highest impact due to orography-induced triggering processes. Over the sea, since lifting is produced by large-scale convergence, the probability to exceed IWVcv does not depend on temperature, and the model resolution does not have a clear impact on the results. H. Karst (Norway spruce), Abies alba Mill. (silver fir) and Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech) in mixed uneven-aged forests in the French Alps and Jura mountains. Ungulate browsing is an additional pressure on fir and beech that could jeopardise the renewal of these species in the future.
Context: The uncertainty in tree recruitment rates raises questions about the factors affecting regeneration processes in forests. Factors such as climate, light, competition and ungulate browsing pressure may play an important role in determining regeneration, forest structures and thus future forest composition.
Aims: The objective of this study was to quantify sapling densities and height increments of spruce, fir and beech and to identify dominant environmental variables influencing them in mixed uneven-aged forests in the French Alps and Jura mountains.
Methods: Sapling height increment and density were recorded in 152 plots, and non-linear mixed models were obtained to establish relations between them and environmental factors known to affect regeneration, namely altitude, slope, aspect, canopy openness, soil characteristics, temperature, precipitation and ungulate browsing.
Results: Regeneration density, varying from 0 to 7 saplings per m 2, decreased with sapling height and was also negatively affected for spruce by PET, but positively for fir by precipitation and for beech by mean annual soil water content. Height increment reached up to 50 cm annually, increasing with sapling height and canopy openness and decreasing under high maximum summer temperatures for spruce and beech. The statistical effect of different environmental variables varied slightly among species but trends were quite similar. Additionally, ungulate browsing was high, with fir being the most intensely browsed, followed closely by beech, while spruce was rarely browsed.
Conclusions: All these results suggest that more temperature warming and a decrease in water availability could negatively impact sapling growth and density in the three species, with possible reduction of forest renewal fluxes.
