[Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) represents a rather innovative, quick, and low-cost methodological approach offering applications in several fields of investigation. The present study illustrates the developed method using Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) based on UAV-derived data for evaluating short-term morphological-topographic changes of the beach system and related implications for coastal vulnerability assessment. UAV surveys were performed during the summers of 2019 and 2020 along a beach stretch affected by erosion, located along the central Adriatic coast. Acquired high-resolution aerial photos were used to generate large-scale DEMs as well as orthophotos of the beach using the Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing tool. Comparison of the generated 2019 and 2020 DEMs highlighted significant morphological changes and a sediment volume loss of about 780 m3 within a surface area of about 4400 m2. Based on 20 m spaced beach profiles derived from the DEMs, a coastal vulnerability assessment was performed using the CVA approach that highlighted some significant variations in the CVA index between 2019 and 2020. Results evidence that UAV surveys provide high-resolution topographic data, suitable for specific beach monitoring activities and the updating of some parameters that enter in the CVA model contributing to its correct application. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Spanish black pine (Pinus nigra Arn ssp. salzmannii) is the most widely distributed pine species in mountain areas of the Mediterranean Basin and is commonly used for afforestation in endangered and degraded areas. Despite its importance, little is known regarding the factors driving seedling survival for this species, which may hamper afforestation success in Mediterranean areas. In this study, we assessed the effects of seed origin and plantation site along a natural gradient with contrasting elevation and climatic conditions in a Mediterranean forest in Central-Eastern Spain. Our results showed: (1) higher seedling survival rates when seed origin differed from plantation site (25.3 ± 5.4%) compared to same origin and plantation site (5.3 ± 2.7%); (2) higher survival probability (~ 20%) for high and medium elevation seeds (colder and wetter locations) compared to the warmer and drier low elevation sites (15%); (3) higher seedling survival (~ 40%) at higher elevation sites compared to low-elevation sites ( Numéro de notice : A2021-975 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1007/s00468-021-02184-x Date de publication en ligne : 22/07/2021 En ligne : http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00468-021-02184-x Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=100418

[Termes IGN] PatagonieRésumé : (auteur) Various studies have shown that image correlation calculated in the space domain outperforms frequency-based methods. However, such an approach usually requires great computational efforts, making it challenging to adopt for surveying fast moving processes like glaciers, particularly over wide areas. We present a local adaptive multiscale image matching algorithm (LAMMA), which repeatedly applies image correlation on grids of increasing spatial resolution and adapts the size of the interrogation area according to the local range of displacements. LAMMA allows reducing the number of calculi of several orders of magnitude and limits the occurrence of displacement outliers. We show an example of LAMMA application on Sentinel-2 images to measure glaciers flow of the Southern Patagonian Icefield, where LAMMA's runtime was comparable to that of frequency-based correlation. LAMMA's Matlab code is freely available on GitHub. [Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) The pace of tree microevolution during Anthropocene warming is largely unknown. We used a retrospective approach to monitor genomic changes in oak trees since the Little Ice Age (LIA). Allelic frequency changes were assessed from whole-genome pooled sequences for four age-structured cohorts of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) dating back to 1680, in each of three different oak forests in France. The genetic covariances of allelic frequency changes increased between successive time periods, highlighting genome-wide effects of linked selection. We found imprints of parallel linked selection in the three forests during the late LIA, and a shift of selection during more recent time periods of the Anthropocene. The changes in allelic covariances within and between forests mirrored the documented changes in the occurrence of extreme events (droughts and frosts) over the last 300 years. The genomic regions with the highest covariances were enriched in genes involved in plant responses to pathogens and abiotic stresses (temperature and drought). These responses are consistent with the reported sequence of frost (or drought) and disease damage ultimately leading to the oak dieback after extreme events. They provide support for adaptive evolution of long-lived species during recent climatic changes. Although we acknowledge that other sources (e.g., gene flow, generation overlap) may have contributed to temporal covariances of allelic frequency changes, the consistent and correlated response across the three forests lends support to the existence of a systematic driving force such as natural selection.
