[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Across most urban centres, adequate supply of water becomes essential for the urban poor. Attempts at ensuring water availability has been formulated using standard water models. This study developed a water balance model using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques during periods of water surplus and deficit across pre-millennium (1996 – 2000) and the post-millennium (2010 – 2014) periods within an urbanized Sub-Saharan city. Digital Elevation Model of the basin was prepared to generate flow direction and to delimit the watershed using ArcHydro tools in ArcGIS 10.3. Supervised classification was used to delineate the landuse classes from Landsat imageries. The result revealed that 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2010 and 2013 were periods of water deficit, while 1999, 2011, 2012 and 2014 were periods of water surplus. This study affirmed the need to reactivate institutional frameworks that are responsible for assessment, conservation, management and planning of water resources for sustainable utilization. [Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (auteur) China’s claim to a large part of the South China Sea (SCS) is indicated by a specific cartographic convention, the U-shaped (or dashed) line, shown on its official maps. The line has become an important element in Western popular discourse concerning the geopolitics of the SCS. This paper argues that the cartographic re-presentation of the U-shaped line in the Western press contributes to an ‘orientalist’ conception that portrays China as ‘other’; as aggressive and unwilling to ‘play by the rules’, and a portrayal of the whole region as potentially unstable. Its re-circulation may, however, work to China’s advantage by reinforcing cartographic precedent and creating a specific ‘geographic imagination’ of the SCS. Maps are regarded as an important element in the ‘spectacle of fear’ propagated by the West, with the representations of the SCS shown to be part of a wider use of maps by the press to cover issues related to geopolitics and conflict. [Termes IGN] vulnérabilitéRésumé : (auteur) In the present study, data-driven evidential belief function model (belief function) was employed to generate landslides susceptibility index map of Darjeeling Himalaya considering 15 landslide causative factors, which grouped into six categories, i.e. geomorphological factors (elevation, aspect, slope, curvature), lithological factors (geology, soil, lineament density, distance to lineament), hydrologic factors (drainage density, distance to drainage, stream power index, topographic wetted index), triggering factor (rainfall), protective factor (normalized differential vegetation index) and anthropogenic factor (land use and land cover). Total 2079 landslide locations were mapped and randomly divided it into training datasets (70% landslide locations) and validation datasets (30% landslide locations). The resultant susceptibility map was divided into five different susceptibility zones i.e. very low, low, moderate, high and very high which covered 5.60%, 25.65%, 34.47%, 24.67% and 9.61% area respectively of the Darjeeling Himalaya. Receiver operating characteristics curve suggested that 80.20% prediction accuracy of the prepared map whereas frequency ratio plot indicated towards the ideal landslides susceptibility index map. [Termes IGN] Suez, canal deRésumé : (auteur) The Nile Delta is located very close to the Suez Canal, the main route for oil transport in the world, makes it prone to pollution from any accidental oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea. The coast of the Nile Delta is generally arcuate and highly exposed to waves and currents. The present study attempted to perform the environmental sensitivity of the shoreline to oil slicks. Six variables were incorporated together in order to determine the environmental sensitivity index (ESI). Data were collected from different resources and from in situ observations. Results showed that the ESI is generally high for the western section of the Nile Delta, particularly along Alexandria region. Low ESI was observed along the shorelines facing the coastal sand dunes at the middle part of the delta coast. The ESI is an effective approach to delineate the vulnerable coastal areas to marine oil pollution. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) In this study, we propose a modified thresholds method for the determination of land surface emissivity (LSE) for snow covered mountainous areas. The conventional Normalized Differenced Vegetation Index (NDVI) thresholds method (NDVITHM) does not discriminate the snow covered pixels with soil pixels in assigning the LSE based on NDVI thresholds. In the proposed approach, we incorporate different thresholding rules based on the Normalized Differenced Snow Index and the S3 index for incorporating separability in the LSE for the snow covered pixels. The LSE thus derived is used to determine the land surface temperature using the Single Channel Method. The approach was evaluated for a study area around the Kullu Valley in the lower Indian Himalayas for a dataset of the winter season of Landsat-8 multispectral data. The observed coefficient of determination values indicated that the proposed method yielded better results with respect to the conventional NDVITHM approach.
