[Termes IGN] réseau neuronal artificielRésumé : (auteur) Recent optical remote sensing satellite missions, such as Sentinel-2 with the MultiSpectral Imager (MSI) onboard, allow the estimation of coastal water key parameters with very high spatial resolutions (down to 10 m). In this article, multiple approaches are proposed for retrieving chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) along the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coasts in Italy, using both empirical and model-based frameworks to design regressive and neural network (NN) estimation methods. The latter proves to be more accurate on a regional scale, where standard ocean color physical models exhibit high uncertainty in their local parameterization due to the complex spectral characteristics of the observed scene. Retrieval results are encouraging for Chl-a with a coefficient of determination R2 up to 0.72 with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.33 mg m−3 , using an empirical NN. The TSM algorithms exhibit higher uncertainty, mainly due to scarcity of in situ measurements and model parameterizations, with R2=0.52 and RMSE = 1.95 g/m 3 using NNs. The bio-optical model, used for the development of model-based algorithms, shows some inadequacies in representing the inherent and apparent optical properties for the case study areas, especially considering the different spectral features between the oligotrophic Tyrrhenian Sea and the eutrophic Adriatic Sea. This study confirms the potential of Sentinel-2 MSI products for coastal water monitoring, but it also highlights key issues to be further tackled such as the atmospheric correction impact, the need of reliable in situ measurements, and possible bathymetry effects near the shores. [Termes IGN] tectoniqueRésumé : (auteur) We present the geomorphology of the Southern Atbai Plain (Eastern Sudan) and the western edge of the Eritrean Highlands (Western Eritrea), in the eastern Sahel. The mountainous area consists of Paleo-Proterozoic gneiss and Neo-Proterozoic igneous rocks and meta-volcanic assemblages shaped as inselbergs and whaleback landforms by weathering. Bare-rock hills emerge from a gentle glacis that oversees the Southern Atbai alluvial plain, located between the Atbara and Gash Rivers. The plain features the SSE-NNW-oriented endorheic terminal fan of the Gash River and is crossed by intricate Early to Late Pleistocene paleochannels, whose evolution was controlled by the interplay between Quaternary regional tectonics and arid to humid climatic and environmental oscillations. The map is intended to interpret the evolution of local landscape, thus representing a tool for reconstructing the spatial and temporal distribution of Late Quaternary archaeological features and their functional relationships with the fossil fluvial system and the western foothills. [Termes IGN] teneur intégrée en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) A ground-based network of more than 1200 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) was analysed using GIPSY-OASIS II software package for the documentation of time and space variations of water vapor in atmosphere during the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream impact EXperiment (NAWDEX) during fall 2016. The network extends throughout the North Atlantic, from the Caribbeans to Morocco through Greenland. This paper presents the methodology used for GNSS data processing, screening, and conversion of Zenith Tropospheric Delay (ZTD) estimates to Integrated Water Vapor content (IWV) using surface parameters from reanalysis. The retrieved IWV are used to evaluate the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalyses ERAI and ERA5. ERA5 shows an overall improvement over ERAI in representing the spatial and temporal variability of IWV over the study area. The mean bias is decreased from 0.31±0.63 to 0.19±0.56 kg m−2 (mean ±1σ over all stations) and the standard deviation reduced from 2.17±0.67 to 1.64±0.53 kg m−2 combined with a slight improvement in correlation coefficient from 0.95 to 0.97. At regional scale, both reanalyses show a general wet bias at mid and northern latitudes but a dry bias in the Caribbeans. We hypothesize this results from the different nature of data being assimilated over the tropical oceans. This GNSS IWV data set is intended to be used for a better description of the high impact weather events that occurred during the NAWDEX experiment. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (auteur) One major characteristic of floods is flood extent. Information on this characteristic is indispensable for flood monitoring. Recently, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data have been increasing in quality and quantity. This allows more flood studies conducted over large areas regardless of cloud and weather conditions and provides advantages including clear surface water classification based on SAR scattering mechanisms for low values (open water) and high values (inundated vegetation, etc.). However, challenges remain due to sources of uncertainties, such as atmospheric disturbances and vegetation masking parts of water surfaces. Therefore, in this study, we aim to optimize flood mapping processes on flooded vegetation that generated high-value pixels based on a SAR scattering mechanism called double bounce that classifies vegetative flooded water in L-band SAR images. This optimization is nearly impossible using Sentinel-1 scenes. Backscattering of time-series Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 images acquired for the 2018 and 2019 flood season was analysed, thresholded and hybridized for flood mapping of a study site in the Tam Nong district of the Dong Thap Province of Vietnam. We found that the accuracy of SAR flood maps was improved compared to ground truth data when the SAR-extracted vegetative-flooded plains were considered flooded. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Pure and even-aged (PEA) forests of fast growing conifer species have for long been key providers of industrial raw material. Despite recent concern regarding their greater sensitivity to major natural disturbances, their impacts onto biodiversity and their funding efficiency, PEA conifer forests could remain a major economic target given the ongoing European strategy for bioeconomy. These forests are encountered across contrasted climates and in both native and introduced contexts across Europe giving rise to high uncertainties regarding their growth responses to current climate change. Using the French national forest inventory data, we inquired the radial growth of eight major conifer species in European forestry across 16 regional native and introduced PEA forest systems (n > 10,000 trees). Growth trends over the 2006-2016 period exhibited a negative association with absolute growth level in 2006, with strongest negative trends found for emblematic PEA forestry species (e.g. Norway spruce and Douglas-fir), and strongest positive trends for pine species (e.g. Scots pine). While the greater growth rate advantage of some species may shorten rotation and lower risk exposures for future decades, recent lowered productivity may affect the forest sector in the long run. The prevalence of PEA forests across European forest landscapes and their increasingly reported lower resilience to climate change compared to more complex forest systems call for the establishment of a long-term European forest policy strategy. Maintaining the environmental, social and economic benefits of forests should remain a priority in the European agenda, regardless of the financial costs at stake.
