[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) In today’s information age, thematic maps increasingly appear in all kinds of media and publications and many users control the map design process themselves. Due to wider prevalence of data, teaching the principles of thematic cartography is gaining interest. Students need to understand the power of thematic maps to reveal geographic patterns and relations, and should learn how to create convincing maps. In this paper, student maps featuring socio-economic themes for Northern South Africa show how attention can be drawn to information hidden in data. Seven students each prepared a black-and-white traditional thematic map and a coloured infographics-style map, which were later enhanced by a well-trained cartographer. Through these maps, we demonstrate that the power of thematic maps depends on the chosen cartographic representation and that diversity of visualization options matters when telling a story with a map. Discussion of the maps illustrates the relevance and challenge of thematic maps for society, the need to develop map literacy, and the possibility to accommodate new visualization trends, like narrative data visualization, in thematic cartography teaching. The emphasis should be on using multivariate data and allowing infographics characteristics, thus fostering creativity and preparing students for a role in interdisciplinary data journalism teams. [Termes IGN] ZambieRésumé : (auteur) Protected forest areas are fraught with severe threats from mining, agriculture and settlement expansion, and unsustainable use of forest resources. Due to funding and technical challenges, the inadequate monitoring and lack of information limits the conservation efforts in Zambia in general and Solwezi district in particular. Field-based methods in monitoring forest quality and suitability are time consuming and inefficient especially in inaccessible areas. However, with the advent of technology, Geographical Information System (GIS) and remote sensing, important data for forest quality can easily be accessed. This study aimed at assessing the state of protected forest areas in Zambia’s Solwezi Copper mining district, prone to forest fragmentation. Furthermore, this study identifies suitable areas for conservation, based on standardized criteria that combine Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and GIS approach. A suitability model was developed for the selection of the suitable areas, and elimination of the unsuitable ones, using GIS and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Five suitability criteria and two restriction criteria were used in this model. The results show different ranked levels of suitability which include 15.4% restricted, 18.1% lowly suitable, 14.9% moderately suitable, 21.2% highly suitable and 30.4% extremely suitable. Our approach informs conservationists, and other stakeholders about the status of protected forest areas and avails novel opportunities for creating new ones. This study’s modelling approach can be a prerequisite to sustainable forest management by policy makers and practitioners, and an essential input into forest monitoring. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The importance of irrigation development is considered a key factor for food security and poverty reduction because it improves crop productivity, and ensures stable expansion of agricultural production. However, irrigation development requires understanding of the available resources including the suitability of the land for agriculture. In this study, the land suitability for paddy fields was evaluated within the United Republic of Tanzania mainland by integrating the geographic information system (GIS) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, 11 criteria based on various sources (soil type, soil drainage, soil organic carbon, soil pH, soil depth, elevation, slope, land use, topographic wetness index, temperature, and precipitation) were used. These criteria were used within the GIS-based AHP to identify the most suitable land for sustainable paddy field cultivation considering the preservation of the natural environment of forests and protected areas by examining two scenarios: rainfed condition and irrigation priority. The former ten criteria were assumed to be constant in both scenarios and were assigned the same scores, while the latter criterion (precipitation) was assigned different scores for varying amounts to plan new irrigation projects. Unsuitable land represents 72.8% of the study area, reducing the potential agriculture land (PAL) appropriate for cultivation to 27.2%. In the rainfed condition scenario, the very high and high suitability classes represent 17.6% of the total land of the study area and 64.7% of the PAL. In the irrigation priority scenario, the same classes represent 21.4% of the total land of the study area and 78.6% of the PAL. Finally, the distribution of the land suitability for both scenarios was analyzed within eight administrative irrigation zones to determine the irrigation zone with the greatest potential for paddy field cultivation. [Termes IGN] ZambieRésumé : (auteur) Past and current cadastral records are among the most valuable information that different countries need to solve land management and planning problems. However, many countries still face critical challenges in adopting modern temporal cadastral systems, including a sound integration of time constructs, efficient data integration and representation methods in the designed models. This research developed a new temporal GIS model to manage spatial and non-spatial temporal cadastral data, namely cadastral parcels, land-use and land-ownerships. Three-time dimensions defined by decision and valid and transaction times were formulated to qualify parcels data. A hybrid approach fusing on the Base State with Amendment and Space-Time Composite models is used to store significant parcel changes and their relationships in two interdependent sub-databases. We used administrative plot identifiers to associate with land use and ownership records, experiencing distinct temporal variations in the third sub-database within the same main repository. We experimented our model with data from Tanzania, and the results from queries demonstrate that the designed model can store all three temporal cadastral data and track their variations semantically and effectively. This model is very useful for storing cadastral parcels, reasons, events, and the transformed parcels’ values to improve decision-making processes. This study assesses the interrelationship between land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference built-up index (NDBI), and land cover change in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. Multi-temporal and multi-spectral Landsat imageries for years 2002, 2013, 2016, and 2019 served as the primary dataset. Using the parallelepiped classifier, the imageries were classified into five land cover classes — mixed vegetation, bare land, built-up area, water body, and wetland. The spectral indices (NDVI and NDBI) were computed and the LST was determined using a single-channel algorithm. Land cover transition matrices were calculated to examine the proportion of land cover change between classes, including the unchanged areas. Pearson’s correlation analysis enabled an analysis of the interdependence or interrelationship in the distribution of the parameters. From 2002 to 2019, the highest land cover transitions recorded were bare land to built-up area (12.64 km2), mixed vegetation to built-up area (21.55 km2), wetland to mixed vegetation (8.87 km2), and mixed vegetation to bare land (8.46 km2). There was a negative correlation between LST and NDVI, and between NDVI and NDBI. The distribution of the LST, NDVI, and NDBI varied correspondingly in accordance with land cover changes. The increase in built-up area could be the major driver of the observed changes in LST, NDBI, and NDVI, with an observed relationship that NDBI and LST values increase with increase in built-up areas.
