[Termes IGN] texture du solRésumé : (auteur) The present study aimed to propose an operational approach for estimating surface soil moisture from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data by considering diverse environmental variables such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature (Ts), evapotranspiration, topographic parameters (elevation and aspect) and soil texture (clay, loam and silt). A soil moisture index (SMI) derived from NDVI-Ts space is combined to all other variables, based on stepwise multiple regression, to develop a new SSMC model. Performance of this model was assessed using field-measured data of SSM. Accuracy was performed by the k-fold cross validation method, it showed a R2 (coefficients of determination) of 0.70, RMSE of 1.58% and unRMSE of 0.5%. In addition, the results of the developed model were compared with another soil moisture model SMM proposed in the irrigated perimeter of Tadla (Morocco), and revealed that the established model provided effectiveness results in the study areas. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Most remote sensing studies of urban areas focus on a single scale, using supervised methodologies and very few analyses focus on the “neighborhood” scale. The lack of multi-scale analysis, together with the scarcity of training and validation datasets in many countries lead us to propose a single fast unsupervised method for the characterization of urban areas. With the FOTOTEX algorithm, this paper introduces a texture-based method to characterize urban areas at three nested scales: macro-scale (urban footprint), meso-scale (“neighbourhoods”) and micro-scale (objects). FOTOTEX combines a Fast Fourier Transform and a Principal Component Analysis to convert texture into frequency signal. Several parameters were tested over Sentinel-2 and Pleiades imagery on Bouake and Brasilia. Results showed that a single Sentinel-2 image better assesses the urban footprint than the global products. Pleiades images allowed discriminating neighbourhoods and urban objects using texture, which is correlated with metrics such as building density, built-up and vegetation proportions. The best configurations for each scale of analysis were determined and recommendations provided to users. The open FOTOTEX algorithm demonstrated a strong potential to characterize the three nested scales of urban areas, especially when training and validation data are scarce, and computing resources limited. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) The lack of detailed spatial information on coastal resources, notably shallow water coral reefs and associated benthic habitats, impedes our ability to protect and manage them in the face of global climate change and anthropogenic impacts. Here, we develop a semi-automated workflow in the cloud that uses freely available Sentinel-2 data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Copernicus programme to derive information on near-shore coral reef habitats in the Quirimbas National Park (QNP), a recently declared biosphere reserve in northern Mozambique. We use an end-to-end cloud-based framework within the Google Earth Engine cloud geospatial platform to process imagery from raw pixels to cloud-free composites which are corrected for glint and surface artefacts, water column and derived estimated depth and then classified into four benthic habitats. Using independent training and validation data, we apply three supervised classification algorithms: random forests (RF), support vector machine (SVM) and classification and regression trees (CART). Our results show that random forests are the most accurate supervised algorithm with over 82% overall accuracy. We mapped over 105 000 ha of shallow water habitat inside the protected area, of which 18% are dominated by coral and hardbottom; 27.5% are seagrass and submerged aquatic vegetation and another 23.4% are soft and sandy substrates, and the remaining area is optically deep water. We employ satellite-derived bathymetry to assess slope, bathymetric position, rugosity and underwater topography of these habitats. Finally, a spectral unmixing model provides further sub-pixel–level information of habitats with the potential to monitor changes over time. This effort provides the first, consistent and repeatable and also scalable coastal information system for an east African tropical marine protected area, which hosts shallow-water ecosystems which are of great significance to local communities and building resilience towards climate change. [Termes IGN] SoudanRésumé : Auteur) Within the constraints of operational work supporting humanitarian organizations in their response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we conducted building extraction for Khartoum, Sudan. We extracted approximately 1.2 million dwellings and buildings, using a Mask R-CNN deep learning approach from a Pléiades very high-resolution satellite image with 0.5 m pixel resolution. Starting from an untrained network, we digitized a few hundred samples and iteratively increased the number of samples by validating initial classification results and adding them to the sample collection. We were able to strike a balance between the need for timely information and the accuracy of the result by combining the output from three different models, each aiming at distinctive types of buildings, in a post-processing workflow. We obtained a recall of 0.78, precision of 0.77 and F1 score of 0.78, and were able to deliver first results in only 10 days after the initial request. The procedure shows the great potential of convolutional neural network frameworks in combination with GIS routines for dwelling extraction even in an operational setting. However, the uncertainties involved in such approaches have not been fully addressed. To investigate this problem, this paper proposes a new approach for change detection from multi-temporal very high resolution (VHR) satellite imagery based on uncertainty detection and management. First, two GeoEye-1 images of Giza urban area (Egypt), acquired in 2009 and 2019, have been geographically co-registered and their histograms have been matched. Second, a set of feature attributes have been generated from the co-registered images. Third, the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm has been adopted to classify the data into four classes: building, tree, road, and ground. In this regard, the co-registered images along with the generated attributes have been applied as input data for the SVM to calculate the probability of each pixel belonging to each class. After that, the probability images for both epochs have been compared to model the uncertainty of changes. The uncertainty places are then evaluated to estimate their likelihood of being change or no change. Finally, the obtained results have been compared with manually digitized change detection map. Compared with using the widely used post-classification comparison (PCC) approach, the results suggest that (1) the proposed method has improved the overall accuracy of change detection by 13%; (2) the class-accuracies have been improved by 35.63%; and (3) the achieved accuracies for the proposed approach are less variable. Whereas the standard deviation (SD) of the accuracies obtained for the proposed approach is 6.80, the SD of those obtained for the PCC approach is 35.50.
