[Termes IGN] vent de sableRésumé : (auteur) Sand dune migration poses a potential threat to desert infrastructure, vegetation, and atmospheric conditions. Capturing the patterns of long-term dune migration is useful for predicting probable desertification issues and wind conditions across vast desert areas. In this study, we employed optical image matching and a singular value decomposition approach to estimate the rates of dune migration in the North Sinai Sand Sea using the free Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 archives. Our optical image matching time-series selection and inversion (OPTSI) algorithm limited the difference in the solar illumination of correlated pairs to decrease shadows and seasonal variability. We found that the maximum annual dune migration rates were 9.4 m/a and 15.9 m/a for Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data, respectively, and the results of time-series analysis revealed the existence of seasonal variations in dune migration controlled by wind regimes. The directions of sand movement extracted from the mean velocity solution agreed strongly with each other and with the drift directions estimated using wind data from meteorological stations. We assessed the uncertainty of each solution based on the variance of stable areas. Our results showed that the proposed inversion decreased uncertainty by up to 25% and increased the spatial coverage by up to 20%. This algorithm is also promising for the retrieval of historical time series on the ground displacements of glaciers and slow-moving landslides employing free archives that provide high-frequency images. [Termes IGN] Suez, canal deRésumé : (auteur) The Nile Delta is located very close to the Suez Canal, the main route for oil transport in the world, makes it prone to pollution from any accidental oil spills in the Mediterranean Sea. The coast of the Nile Delta is generally arcuate and highly exposed to waves and currents. The present study attempted to perform the environmental sensitivity of the shoreline to oil slicks. Six variables were incorporated together in order to determine the environmental sensitivity index (ESI). Data were collected from different resources and from in situ observations. Results showed that the ESI is generally high for the western section of the Nile Delta, particularly along Alexandria region. Low ESI was observed along the shorelines facing the coastal sand dunes at the middle part of the delta coast. The ESI is an effective approach to delineate the vulnerable coastal areas to marine oil pollution. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The protection of forests is crucial to providing important ecosystem services, such as supplying clean air and water, safeguarding critical habitats for biodiversity, and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this importance, global forest loss has steadily increased in recent decades. Protected Areas (PAs) currently account for almost 15% of Earth’s terrestrial surface and protect 5% of global tree cover and were developed as a principal approach to limit the impact of anthropogenic activities on natural, intact ecosystems and habitats. We assess global trends in forest loss inside and outside of PAs, and land cover following this forest loss, using a global map of tree cover loss and global maps of land cover. While forests in PAs experience loss at lower rates than non-protected forests, we find that the temporal trend of forest loss in PAs is markedly similar to that of all forest loss globally. We find that forest loss in PAs is most commonly—and increasingly—followed by shrubland, a broad category that could represent re-growing forest, agricultural fallows, or pasture lands in some regional contexts. Anthropogenic forest loss for agriculture is common in some regions, particularly in the global tropics, while wildfires, pests, and storm blowdown are a significant and consistent cause of forest loss in more northern latitudes, such as the United States, Canada, and Russia. Our study describes a process for screening tree cover loss and agriculture expansion taking place within PAs, and identification of priority targets for further site-specific assessments of threats to PAs. We illustrate an approach for more detailed assessment of forest loss in four case study PAs in Brazil, Indonesia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United States. Sub-Saharan Africa carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. Ethiopia is generally considered a low-to-moderate malaria transmission intensity country. However, the health sector in Ethiopia is greatly affected by climate change, which has profound consequences on the transmission cycles of vector-borne infectious diseases like malaria. The main objective of the study was to assess the spatial distribution of malaria hazard, vulnerability, and risk areas in Dire Dawa City Administration. GIS and remote-sensing in general and multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) in particular was used for assessing and mapping malaria hazard, risk, and vulnerable areas in Dire Dawa City Administration based on the data collected from various sources. The malaria hazard map of the study area labeled 0.6% of the region as low-hazard level, 79.7% moderate, 19.7% high, and 0.1% very low. Results of malaria vulnerability analysis reveal that about 23%, 73%, and 4% of the region was found to be vulnerable to malaria risk at very high, high, and low levels, respectively. The malaria risk map classifies 80% of the region as a moderate malaria-risk area and 20% as high malaria-risk area. This assessment advocates that the GIS and remote-sensing technology as tools can be used to provide timely information on malaria hazard, vulnerability, and risk areas for planning and taking measures at various levels ranging from early warning, monitoring, and control to prevention against malaria epidemics in a resource-efficient and cost-effective way. [Termes IGN] MalawiRésumé : (Auteur) A collection of spectral indices, derived from a range of remote sensing imagery spatial resolutions, are compared to on-farm measurements of maize chlorophyll content and yield at two trial farms in central Malawi to evaluate what spatial resolutions are most effective for relating multispectral images with crop status. Single and multiple linear regressions were tested for spatial resolutions ranging from 7 cm to 20 m using a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) and satellite imagery from Planet, SPOT 6, Pléiades, and Sentinel-2. Results suggest that imagery with spatial resolutions nearer the maize plant scale (i.e., 14–27 cm) are most effective for relating spectral signals with crop health on smallholder farms in Malawi. Consistent with other studies, green-band indices were more strongly correlated with maize chlorophyll content and yield than conventional red-band indices, and multivariable models often outperformed single variable models.
