A time series data-set (300 images) acquired from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer for the period July 2002–June 2015 were utilized to retrieve the spatial variations in the mean land surface temperature (LST) for the above-mentioned surface features. Results showed that vegetation, topography and surface albedo have negative correlations with LST. Vegetation/LST correlation has the maximum regression coefficient (R2 = 0.68) and albedo/LST has the minimum (R2 = 0.03). Cultivated lands reveal the lowest mean LST (40 °C) of Cairo region. There is a considerable urban heat island formed at Helwan south of Cairo, where heavy industries are settled. Industrial activities raised the mean LST of the region by at least 4 °C than the surrounding urban lands. [Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are an invaluable source of information in large area studies. Some of the DEMs such as Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission Radiometer-Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM), shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM), and Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 (GMTED2010) are, freely available for the scientific community worldwide. Prior to any application, global datasets of DEMs should he evaluated using reference data of higher accuracy. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to assess the quality of the ASTER GDEM (version 2), SRTM (version 4) and systematic subsample GMTED2010 in Tunisia. The validation process, adopted here, is based on two main approaches: internai and external validations. The internai validation is achieved by petforming visual inspection of shaded relief images extracted from the three DEMs. At this level, results show that SRTM is essentially similar to ASTER GDEM2 in term of relief features representation. In the second alternative, the vertical accuracy of each DEM is evaluated using 60 Global Positioning System (GPS) validation points. The overall vertical accuracy shows RMSE error of 11.96 m, 8.65 m and 10.86 m for ASTER GDEM2, SRTM and GMTED2010 DEM respectively, in comparison with GPS elevation points. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (auteur) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have become a powerful tool use in surveying and mapping, air and maritime navigation, ionospheric/space weather research and other applications. However, in some cases, its maximum efficiency could not be attained due to some uncorrelated errors associated with the system measurements, which is caused mainly by the dispersive nature of the ionosphere. Ionosphere has been represented using the total number of electrons along the signal path at a particular height known as Total Electron Content (TEC). However, there are many methods to estimate TEC but the outputs are not uniform, which could be due to the peculiarity in characterizing the biases inside the observables (measurements), and sometimes could be associated to the influence of mapping function. The errors in TEC estimation could lead to wrong conclusion and this could be more critical in case of safety-of-life application. This work investigated the performance of Ciraolo’s and Gopi’s GNSS-TEC calibration techniques, during 5 geomagnetic quiet and disturbed conditions in the month of October 2013, at the grid points located in low and middle latitudes. The data used are obtained from the GNSS ground-based receivers located at Borriana in Spain (40∘N, 0∘E; mid latitude) and Accra in Ghana (5.50∘N, −0.20∘E; low latitude). The results of the calibrated TEC are compared with the TEC obtained from European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System Processing Set (EGNOS PS) TEC algorithm, which is considered as a reference data. The TEC derived from Global Ionospheric Maps (GIM) through International GNSS service (IGS) was also examined at the same grid points. The results obtained in this work showed that Ciraolo’s calibration technique (a calibration technique based on carrier-phase measurements only) estimates TEC better at middle latitude in comparison to Gopi’s technique (a calibration technique based on code and carrier-phase measurements). At the same time, Gopi’s calibration was also found more reliable in low latitude than Ciraolo’s technique. In addition, the TEC derived from IGS GIM seems to be much reliable in middle-latitude than in low-latitude region. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Commonly, relative GPS positioning technique is used in Egypt for precise positioning applications. However, the requirement of a reference station is usually problematic for some applications as it limits the operational range of the system and increases the system cost and complexity. On the other hand, the single point positioning is traditionally used for low accuracy applications such as land vehicle navigation with positioning accuracy up to 10 meters in some scenarios which caused navigation problems especially in downtown areas. Recently, high positioning accuracy can be obtained through Precise Point Positioning (PPP) technique in which only once GNSS receiver is used. However, the major drawback of PPP is the long convergence time to reach to the surveying grade accuracy compared to the existing relative techniques. Moreover, the PPP accuracy is significantly degraded due to shortage in satellite availability in urban areas. To overcome these limitations, the quad constellation GNSS systems namely GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou can be combined to increase the satellite availability and enhance the satellite geometry which in turn reduces the convergence time. In Egypt, at the moment, the signals of both Galileo and BeiDou could be logged with limited number of satellites up to four and six satellites for both Systems respectively. In this paper, we investigated the performance of the Quad-GNSS positioning in both dual- and single-frequency ionosphere free PPP modes for both high accurate and low cost navigation application, respectively. The performance of the developed PPP models will be investigated through GNSS data sets collected at three Egyptian cities namely, Cairo, Alexandria and Aswan.
