[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) This study presents the results from an experiment conducted in two peri-urban areas of Northern Ghana using Participatory GIS (PGIS) to identify land tenure and use rights on customary and statutory lands. P-Mapping was used to uncover indigenous knowledge on the changes in land ownership, land use rights and land-use types over ten years. The paper finds that properly trained local people can reliably delineate and indicate land rights and land uses in their environment on photomaps with little support from professionals. The experiment results show that PGIS can accelerate land adjudication processes on customary lands. [Termes IGN] universitéRésumé : (auteur) It is widely acknowledged that the tools for pedestrian navigation in indoor environments have been increasing while the internal spaces of buildings continue to grow in complexity. The majority of mobile applications for indoor navigation are mostly dependent on access to radio-frequency identification (RFID) and WiFi, which are particularly limited and expensive in most of Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, data from Volunteered Geographic Information such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) lacked clear framework and specification for database design for indoor navigation. Accordingly, this study proposed and illustrated a new database framework for indoor navigation by taking advantage of the popular OSM tag information structure. The proposed framework characterized the indoor environment based on horizontal and vertical partitions, together with description of indoor features by using cardinal directions and qualitative descriptions. The framework was demonstrated by creating sample database records, and retrieval of step-by-step travel information for different internal configurations of the indoor environment. A key contribution of this framework is its simplistic and low-cost nature, where user travel information is retrieved from the database with no need for communication signals from Global Positioning Systems, RFID, or WiFi, making it advantageous for low-cost applications where access to these communication infrastructure are limited. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In this study, we present the first findings of the potential utility of miniaturized light and detection ranging (LiDAR) scanners mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for improving urban flood modelling and assessments at the local scale. This is done by generating ultra-high spatial resolution digital terrain models (DTMs) featuring buildings and urban microtopographic structures that may affect floodwater pathways (DTMbs). The accuracy and level of detail of the flooded areas, simulated by a hydrologic screening model (Arc-Malstrøm), were vastly improved when DTMbs of 0.3 m resolution representing three urban sites surveyed by a UAV-LiDAR in Accra, Ghana, were used to supplement a 10 m resolution DTM covering the region’s entire catchment area. The generation of DTMbs necessitated the effective classification of UAV-LiDAR point clouds using a morphological and a triangulated irregular network method for hilly and flat landscapes, respectively. The UAV-LiDAR data enabled the identification of archways, boundary walls and bridges that were critical when predicting precise run-off courses that could not be projected using the coarser DTM only. Variations in a stream’s geometry due to a one-year time gap between the satellite-based and UAV-LiDAR data sets were also observed. The application of the coarser DTM produced an overestimate of water flows equal to 15% for sloping terrain and up to 62.5% for flat areas when compared to the respective run-offs simulated from the DTMbs. The application of UAV-LiDAR may enhance the effectiveness of urban planning by projecting precisely the locations, extents and run-offs of flooded areas in dynamic urban settings. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Plastic waste, with an estimated lifetime of centuries, accounts for the major share of marine litter. Each year, thousands of fish, sea birds, sea turtles, and other marine species are killed by ingesting or becoming entangled with plastic debris. Reducing marine plastic pollution is particularly challenging for developing countries owing to the wide dispersal of plastic waste disposal and scarce public cleanup resources. To costeffectively reduce marine pollution, resources should target “hotspot” areas, where large volumes of plastic litter have a high likelihood of ending up in the ocean. Using new public information, this study develops a hotspot targeting strategy for Accra and Lagos, which are major sources of marine plastic pollution in West Africa. The same global information sources can support hotspot analyses for many other coastal cities that generate marine plastic waste. The methodology combines georeferenced household survey data on plastic use, measures of seasonal variation in marine plastic pollution from satellite imagery, and a model of plastic waste transport to the ocean that uses information on topography, seasonal rainfall, drainage to rivers, and river transport to the ocean. For cleanup, the results for West Africa assign the highest locational priority to areas with heavy plastic-waste disposal along river channels or in steeply sloped locations with high rainfall runoff potential near rivers. They assign the highest temporal priority to just before the onset of the first-semester rainy season, when runoff from the first rains transports large volumes of plastic waste that have accumulated during the dry season. [Termes IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Operational monitoring of vegetation and its response to climate change involves the use of vegetation indices (VIs) in relation to relevant climatic data. This study analyses the temporal variations of vegetation indices in response to climatic data (temperature and precipitation) to better understand the phenological changes in the Wa-West and Tolon districts of Ghana during 1999–2011. This study also examines the inter-annual variation of vegetation indices and lag effects of climate variables (temperature and precipitation) using simple regression and correlation approaches. Results indicate that the mean Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Soil Index (NDSI) were significantly correlated with the mean temperature, whereby the value of NDVI increases with a decrease in temperature and value of NDSI increases with an increase in temperature. On examining seasonal variations, our findings indicated that the months of August and September have the highest mean NDVI values. This study confirms that consistently rising temperature and altered precipitation patterns have exerted a strong influence on temporal distributions and productivities of the terrestrial ecosystems of the Tolon and Wa-West districts of Ghana. Furthermore, this research demonstrates how vegetation indices can be used as an indicator to monitor phenological changes in the terrestrial ecosystem.
