[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) The Mediterranean region is characterized by intense rainfall events giving rise to devastating floods. In Maghreb countries such as Morocco, there is a strong need for forecasting systems to reduce the impacts of floods. The development of such a system in the case of ungauged catchments is complicated, but remote-sensing products could overcome the lack of in situ measurements. The soil moisture content can strongly modulate the magnitude of flood events and consequently is a crucial parameter to take into account for flood modeling. In this study, different soil moisture products (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative, ESA-CCI; Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity, SMOS; Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity by the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique and Centre d'Etudes Spatiales de la Biosphère, SMOS-IC; Advanced Scatterometer, ASCAT; and ERA5 reanalysis) are compared to in situ measurements and one continuous soil-moisture-accounting (SMA) model for basins located in the High Atlas Mountains, upstream of the city of Marrakech. The results show that the SMOS-IC satellite product and the ERA5 reanalysis are best correlated with observed soil moisture and with the SMA model outputs. The different soil moisture datasets were also compared to estimate the initial soil moisture condition for an event-based hydrological model based on the Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-CN). The ASCAT, SMOS-IC, and ERA5 products performed equally well in validation to simulate floods, outperforming daily in situ soil moisture measurements that may not be representative of the whole catchment soil moisture conditions. The results also indicated that the daily time step may not fully represent the saturation state before a flood event due to the rapid decay of soil moisture after rainfall in these semiarid environments. Indeed, at the hourly time step, ERA5 and in situ measurements were found to better represent the initial soil moisture conditions of the SCS-CN model by comparison with the daily time step. The results of this work could be used to implement efficient flood modeling and forecasting systems in semiarid regions where soil moisture measurements are lacking. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This work is focused on the daily cycle of the backscattering radar coefficient over two different crop Mediterranean types: olive trees and wheat, The MOCTAR experiment consists in the acquisitions of radar fully polarimetric interferometric C-band data acquired continuously at 10 min time step from the top of a tower. The study site is located in semiarid region, near Marrakech, in Morocco. Our first results highlight significant daily variations of intensities and temporal decorrelation, and provide a core database to better explain their link with physical variables such as water content and sapflow. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) The sensitivity of the backscattering coefficient and the interferometric coherence to surface soil moisture changes and wheat crops growth was analyzed using the time series derived from C-band Sentinel-1. Results show that the interferometric coherence is sensitive to wheat biomass while the backscatter intensity is more influenced by the surface soil moisture (SSM) changes. A new method to retrieve SSM combining the interferometric coherence and C-band backscattering coefficient acquired by Sentinel-1 is tested over two irrigated wheat plots during two growth seasons around Marrakech city (center of Morocco). It is shown that SSM can be estimated with a reasonable accuracy from sowing to harvest (R=0.65; RMSE =0.07m3/m3; bias =0.01m3/m3). These results enhance the potentialities of Sentinel1 data for SSM retrieval even in the presence of a dense canopy. [Termes IGN] surveillance agricoleRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses the question of temporal decorrelation at C and L-band in the case of olive tree plantations, considering the very recent tower-based experiments in Morocco, as well as the preliminary results conducted in preparation phases. Based on the expertise gained from the TropiScat-1&2 campaigns, the presented experiments also consist in the acquisition of dense time series using a Vector Network Analyser (VNA) connected to several antennas, herein dedicated to L and C-band data. Likewise, this experiment benefit from auxiliary measurements (meteorological and in-situ data) in order to better understand the processes behind temporal decorrelation, which remains a key issue for future repeat-pass, tandem or geostationary missions. Our first results highlight the importance of the acquisition time during the day, and also rise the challenge on how to disentangle the combined effects of water content variations and wind induced displacements driven by solar convection. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This work aims to investigate the sensitivity of the diurnal differences of radar backscatter to diurnal changes in the vegetation water content (VWC). Sentinel-1 backscattering coefficient differences between two orbits (morning and evening) are analyzed over an irrigated and voluntarily stressed wheat field. A physical model of backscatter prediction is evaluated for wheat and used to examine the sensitivity of radar differences to the VWC for a range of surface soil moisture and biomass conditions. Results highlight the potential of C-band diurnal differences for the monitoring the water stress over agricultural canopies.
