[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The importance of irrigation development is considered a key factor for food security and poverty reduction because it improves crop productivity, and ensures stable expansion of agricultural production. However, irrigation development requires understanding of the available resources including the suitability of the land for agriculture. In this study, the land suitability for paddy fields was evaluated within the United Republic of Tanzania mainland by integrating the geographic information system (GIS) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, 11 criteria based on various sources (soil type, soil drainage, soil organic carbon, soil pH, soil depth, elevation, slope, land use, topographic wetness index, temperature, and precipitation) were used. These criteria were used within the GIS-based AHP to identify the most suitable land for sustainable paddy field cultivation considering the preservation of the natural environment of forests and protected areas by examining two scenarios: rainfed condition and irrigation priority. The former ten criteria were assumed to be constant in both scenarios and were assigned the same scores, while the latter criterion (precipitation) was assigned different scores for varying amounts to plan new irrigation projects. Unsuitable land represents 72.8% of the study area, reducing the potential agriculture land (PAL) appropriate for cultivation to 27.2%. In the rainfed condition scenario, the very high and high suitability classes represent 17.6% of the total land of the study area and 64.7% of the PAL. In the irrigation priority scenario, the same classes represent 21.4% of the total land of the study area and 78.6% of the PAL. Finally, the distribution of the land suitability for both scenarios was analyzed within eight administrative irrigation zones to determine the irrigation zone with the greatest potential for paddy field cultivation. [Termes IGN] ZambieRésumé : (auteur) Past and current cadastral records are among the most valuable information that different countries need to solve land management and planning problems. However, many countries still face critical challenges in adopting modern temporal cadastral systems, including a sound integration of time constructs, efficient data integration and representation methods in the designed models. This research developed a new temporal GIS model to manage spatial and non-spatial temporal cadastral data, namely cadastral parcels, land-use and land-ownerships. Three-time dimensions defined by decision and valid and transaction times were formulated to qualify parcels data. A hybrid approach fusing on the Base State with Amendment and Space-Time Composite models is used to store significant parcel changes and their relationships in two interdependent sub-databases. We used administrative plot identifiers to associate with land use and ownership records, experiencing distinct temporal variations in the third sub-database within the same main repository. We experimented our model with data from Tanzania, and the results from queries demonstrate that the designed model can store all three temporal cadastral data and track their variations semantically and effectively. This model is very useful for storing cadastral parcels, reasons, events, and the transformed parcels’ values to improve decision-making processes. In this paper, the urban thermal environment and vegetation abundance in four East African cities (Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Kampala and Dar es Salaam) were characterised, providing new insights into the role and potentials of blue green infrastructure in differing climate regions. The Local Climate Zone (LCZ) framework was employed to detect the seasonal Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from Landsat-8 data. Significant LST differences between LCZs in dry and rainy seasons were confirmed using a Welch's T test. The LCZs were found to offer potentially new approaches to investigating issues pertaining to urban heating in data-scarce regions. Greater surface urban heat island (SUHI) intensity during the rainy season was apparent in Khartoum and Addis Ababa, emphasising the importance of seasonality in urban thermal studies. Spatial correlations between EVI and LST within each LCZ were analysed through Moran's I and further illustrated the complex relationships of vegetation and thermal behaviour in urban areas. Despite these complexities, urban blue green infrastructure was found to moderate the SUHI, with different types of intervention required across different LCZs. With the increasing role of NFFs, their structures and operational procedures are becoming more complex and diversified. While many of these funds are State-driven and often support projects that include public goods with a focus on social and environmental benefits, some also support privately managed small-scale “for profit” businesses related to wood and non-wood forest-based value chains. This paper describes some the recent developments of NFFs and presents the results of a research effort that analyzed how NFFs’ funding targeting small-scale forest enterprises can contribute to the provision of forest ecosystem services. For this analysis, five case studies from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Tanzania have been selected. In specific, the Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), the FONABOSQUE, the Forest and Climate Change Fund (FCCF) of Luxembourg, the Floresta Atlantica Fund, and the Tanzania Forest Fund (TaFF) are reviewed. The research addressed several key research questions, including: How are NFFs operations conceived to support small-scale forest businesses? What type of funding windows are targeting small-scale enterprises? What are the current practices of NFFs supporting ES provision through small-scale forest businesses? How could NFFs further support small-scale enterprises while unleashing contributions to the provision of ES? However, unlike D measurement, which is easy to measure with high accuracy, H measurement is laborious. This study, therefore, developed H-D relationships for ten different forest types in Tanzania Mainland. Extents in which climate and forest stand variables explain the variation in H-D allometry were also assessed. A total of 31782 sample trees covering miombo woodlands, humid montane, lowland forests, bushlands, grasslands, mangroves, cultivated land, wetlands forests, and pines and Eucalyptus species plantations were used for model development. The H estimating model without climate and forest stand variables referred herein as “base model” was first developed followed by “generalized model” which included climate and stand variables. All the data were fitted using nonlinear mixed effect modelling approach. Results indicated that generalized H estimating models had better fit than the base models. We therefore confirm a significant contribution of climate and forest structure variables in improving H-D allometry. Among the forest structure variables, basal area (BA) was far more important explanatory variable than other variables. In addition, it was found that the mean tree H tends to increase with the increase of mean precipitation (PRA). We therefore conclude that forest specific generalized H model is to be applied when predicting H. When forest type information is not available, generalized regional model may be applied. Base model may be applied when forest stand or climate information are missing.
