The various LULC products were developed with different objectives, methods and data sources. Not all new LULC products have land classes that match the land class types defined in climate models. More importantly, when used in regional climate models, simulation results can vary significantly depending on the LULC products. Thus, developing appropriate LULC parameterization for climate models becomes critical depending on objectives and efforts. The objective of this paper is to develop the most accurate LULC scheme possible for East Africa for implementation in the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS). A crosswalk procedure, based on assessments of various LULC products, was performed connecting land class types in RAMS and the newly created LULC scheme. No simulations are discussed here; rather, we present an outline of the procedures that were carried out to take advantage of the strengths of currently available LULC products, Africover and Global Land Cover 2000, for the purpose of conducting regional climate simulations. As images can be made by radar through clouds, radar is complementary to optical systems. Standard processing techniques were applied to both radar and optical data. In addition, radar data were manipulated to optimize this source. All the data covered three different sites (in Sudan and Kenya) with different characteristics in climate and topography. Radar data was compared to combined radar and optical data which led to the conclusion that classification accuracy and discrimination in settlements were improved with the combine. It is based on the measurement of Doppler shifts in radio signals transmitted by ground beacons over two frequencies and received by the onboard package. The DORIS system is placed on the payload of the SPOT2 satellite, that has been launched in January, 1990. It will later be included in the payload of the futur SPOT (3, 4) satellites and the TOPEX-POSEIDON altimetry satellite. The first objective of DORIS concerns very high precision orbit determination. A global network of fifty beacons evenly distributed around the world is specifically used for orbitography and will permit a ~10 cm radial accuracy on the satellite orbit. The DORIS system will also be used for high accuracy postioning of ground beacons. The positioning can be either absolute or relative and takes advantage of the high accuracy orbit determination. During the SPOT2 mission, four precise-positoning experiments for geodetical and geophysical purpose will be implemented : 1) volcanic activity survey over one of the Hawaiian volcanoes, 2) ground sliding survey in France, 3) geodetical network in Japan and 4) tectonic survey of the Asal Rift (Afar region, East Africa). This last experiment takes place in the intense tectonic activity of Afar region where the spreading of an emerged rigde occurs in the Asal Rift. Two DORIS beacons of the local network are permanently placed on each side of the Rift andd will measure its spreading rate (amount of a few cm per year). The activity survey is planned from early 1990, over the lifetime of the SPOT2 satellite.
