[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) An urban heat island (UHI) is a significant anthropogenic modification of urban land surfaces, and its geospatial pattern can increase the intensity of the heatwave effects. The complex mechanisms and interactivity of the land surface temperature in urban areas are still being examined. The urban–rural gradient analysis serves as a unique natural opportunity to identify and mitigate ecological worsening. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Operational Land Imager/Thermal Infrared Sensor (OLI/TIRS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Land Surface Temperature (LST) data in 2000, 2010, and 2019, we examined the spatial difference in daytime and nighttime LST trends along the urban–rural gradient in Greater Cairo, Egypt. Google Earth Engine (GEE) and machine learning techniques were employed to conduct the spatio-temporal analysis. The analysis results revealed that impervious surfaces (ISs) increased significantly from 564.14 km2 in 2000 to 869.35 km2 in 2019 in Greater Cairo. The size, aggregation, and complexity of patches of ISs, green space (GS), and bare land (BL) showed a strong correlation with the mean LST. The average urban–rural difference in mean LST was −3.59 °C in the daytime and 2.33 °C in the nighttime. In the daytime, Greater Cairo displayed the cool island effect, but in the nighttime, it showed the urban heat island effect. We estimated that dynamic human activities based on the urban structure are causing the spatial difference in the LST distribution between the day and night. The urban–rural gradient analysis indicated that this phenomenon became stronger from 2000 to 2019. Considering the drastic changes in the spatial patterns and the density of IS, GS, and BL, urban planners are urged to take immediate steps to mitigate increasing surface UHI; otherwise, urban dwellers might suffer from the severe effects of heatwaves. [Termes IGN] transport publicRésumé : (auteur) The purpose of the paper is to create clear visualization of passenger traffic for Saint Petersburg subway system. This visualization can be used to better understand the passenger flow and to make more informed decisions in future planning. Research was based on officially published information about passenger traffic on subway station for years 2016 and 2018. Visualization was created with the variety of methods and software: Voronoi diagrams (QGIS software), social gravitation potential (R programming language), presentation of gravitation potential as a relief (Blender software), service zones of ground transport accessibility (2GIS, QGIS and Mapbox mapping platform). In this research, authors propose the use of intersection between the service zones and social gravitation potential isolines as an instrument for spatial analysis of traffic data. Analysis shown that current development of subway system does not correspond to passenger distribution. All stations were classified according to their accessibility and propositions about future directions of development were made. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) In this research, the SLEUTH urban growth model is calibrated and validated for the first time to post Soviet Union cities. The aim of the study is to monitor, assess, simulate and compare the spatiotemporal urban growth dynamics and spatial patterns of the two largest cities Almaty and Astana using free remote sensing data. The urban expansion metrics and SLEUTH model are used to assess the urban growth dynamics. Though the capital has been moved to Astana from Almaty in 1998, Almaty is still developing faster than Astana. The urban growth simulation results from SLEUTH show Astana will surpass the urban growth of Almaty to emerge as the largest city in Kazakhstan by 2030. Astana may experience more leapfrog and ribbon developments. In Almaty, the urban growth may likely to take place in north and north-west parts. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Worldwide urbanization has brought about diverse types of urban land use and land cover (LULC) changes. The diversity of urban land changes, however, have been greatly under studied, since the major focus of past research has been on urban growth. In this study, we proposed a framework to characterize diverse urban land changes of 30 global megacities using monthly nighttime light time series from VIIRS data. First, we developed a Logistic-Harmonic model to fit VIIRS time series. Second, by leveraging the uniqueness of urban land change and nighttime light data, we incorporated temporal information of VIIRS time series and proposed a new classification scheme to produce monthly maps of built-up areas and to disentangle urban land changes into five categories. Third, we provided an in-depth analysis and comparison of urban land change patterns of the selected megacities. Results demonstrated that the Logistic-Harmonic model yielded a robust performance in fitting VIIRS time series. Temporal features based classification can not only significantly improve the mapping accuracy of built-up areas, especially for regions with heterogeneous built-up and non-built-up landscapes, but also promoted temporal consistency and classification efficiency. Urban land changes occurred in 51% of the built-up pixels of the megacities. Compared with urban growth, other types of urban land change, particularly land use intensification, contributed to an unexpectedly large proportion of the changes (83%). The findings of this study offer an insightful understanding on global urbanization processes in megacities, and evoke further investigation on the environmental and ecological implications of urban land changes.
