[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The use of digital models and tools to support a more sober, sustainable and human-centred spatial planning is constantly expanding. Among those, digital models of buildings and territories are considered useful by scientists and practitioners and used for a wide range of purposes. Several labels are currently used to characterise those digital tools and models, partly reflecting on technological developments: 3D city models, Planning support systems, Smart Cities, urbanism 3.0., City Information Model (CIM), Digital Twins (DT), etc. First used in industry, the label DT is now both used by practitioners and researchers, in relation to the development of innovative city models. Nevertheless, this label remains fuzzily defined and designates heterogeneous models from a technical standpoint. In this paper, we propose an exploration of the definitions and technical contents of DT at the city scale and a comparison with CIM approaches, as CIM is also used to label similar city models. Our analysis is based on a literature review of both DT and CIM definitions and applications to the urban context, an exploratory survey conducted with 13 practitioners about their views on DT and its potential regarding urban planning and management and a comparison of a few real-world projects either labelled CIM or DT by practitioners. Our analysis leads us to pinpoint several of the remaining challenges for a DT approach to be developed at the city scale. We also shed light on potential shortcomings of future research, if based on too narrow DT definitions. [Termes IGN] plantation forestièreRésumé : (auteur) As a place to live, work and play, urban spaces are the nerve centers of human activity. The urban spaces, which are becoming increasingly extensive and dense, are particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change. Greening cities has been identified as one of the most effective ways to mitigate one of these effects, the urban heat island. In this context, the city of Liège, Belgium, has adopted a greening plan, called “Plan canopée”, to increase the tree canopy area at city level. The aim of this study is to present the methodology used to objectivize and prioritize the selection of potential planting sites. This research proposes the production of a series of spatial indicators allowing, on the one hand, the precise mapping of urban surfaces ready for planting, and on the other hand, the objective prioritization of city districts to be vegetated. The research integrates airborne image classification, urban heat island modeling and a series of reference geodata combinations. The set of data produced provides a transparent decision support tool to the authorities for the operational planning of tree plantations. These results contribute to the development of a planting strategy that maximizes the chances of ownership by the citizens, and consequently the sustainable and effective impact of the achievements. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) A light hemispherical radiance field imaging system based on fish-eye camera was developed for the measurement of the surface incident radiance in an urban environment, which is often affected by radiometric heterogeneity problems. A linear radiometric model and a polynomial fish-eye lens model are used. A temperature-dependent dark level model is proposed to improve the dark correction for high dynamic range photography. This paper describes the calibration procedure for spectral and geometrical radiance field measurements and presents the results of the calibration. The spectral radiometric calibration error is 2.07%, 1.34%, and 0.98% for blue, green, and red bands, respectively. The mean geometrical calibration error is 2.037 pixels. [Termes IGN] ville intelligenteRésumé : (auteur) Understanding urban morphology is essential for various urban management studies and local environmental issues and guiding sustainable city development. Existing studies mainly focus on analyzing urban morphology from the horizontal aspect, while the urban vertical structure has rarely been discussed due to the scarcity of reliable and fine-scale urban three-dimensional (3-D) building data. This study develops an effective data-fusing methodology to estimate the heights of individual buildings at a city scale. We examined a machine-learning regression model by collecting public materials, including multi-source remote sensing-(RS)-based products, building-derived features, and relevant data to verify its performance in building height estimation. By applying the model in Shenzhen City, a dense city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, results demonstrated that integrating rich multi-source explanatory variables could achieve high-accuracy building height retrieval. Using multiple building morphological metrics derived by building height data as proxy measures, the urban 3-D form patterns were further analyzed to understand current heterogeneous urban morphological structures. The proposed methodology can be conveniently applied to worldwide cities for urban 3-D morphology retrieval. Also, the available building height information is useful for planners to design morphological control for cities and thus contributes to sustainable and smart city development. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Urbanization and climate change are two inevitable megatrends of this century. Knowledge about the growth responses of urban trees to climate is of utmost importance towards future management of green infrastructure with the aim of a sustainable provision of the environmental ecosystem services. Using tree-ring records, this study analyzed growth response to climate by stem diameter at breast height (DBH) of 1178 trees in seven large cities worldwide, including Aesculus hippocastanum L. in Munich; Platanus × hispanica Münchh. in Paris; Quercus nigra L. in Houston; Quercus robur L. in Cape Town; Robinia pseudoacacia L. in Santiago de Chile, Munich, and Würzburg; and Tilia cordata Mill. in Berlin, Munich, and Würzburg. Climate was characterized following the de Martonne aridity index (DMI). Overall, trees showed an 8.3% lower DBH under arid than humid climate at the age of 100. Drought-tolerant tree species were overall not affected by climate. However, R. pseudoacacia showed a lower diameter when growing in semi-dry than humid climate. In contrast, drought-sensitive tree species were negatively affected by arid climate. Moreover, the effect of drought years on annual diameter increment was assessed. P. × hispanica and R. pseudoacacia appeared as the most drought-resistant species. The highest sensitivity to drought was detected in T. cordata and Q. robur. A. hippocastanum and Q. nigra showed a lower diameter growth during drought events, followed by a fast recovery. This study’s findings may contribute to a better understanding of urban tree growth reactions to climate, aiming for sustainable planning and management of urban trees.
