[Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) An edge extraction model has been developed that uses multitemporal satellite synthetic aperture radar data to delineate shorelines in estuaries. Using Japanese ALOS PALSAR HH data acquired in December 2006 and JERS-1 L-HH SAR data in December 1994, we mapped shorelines of the outer Pamlico Peninsula, Dare County, North Carolina, USA, spanning 12 years. To assess the validity and accuracy of the delineation, we compared (a) 1994 shorelines versus those derived from the 1993 digital orthophotographs, and (b) 2006 shorelines versus field data collected in February 2007. With promising results, we then analysed and quantified the shoreline changes between 1994 and 2006 on the north, east, and south sides of the Peninsula. Virtually no discernible changes on the north and south sides were found. However, significant landward migration in the middle to southern portion on the east shore was observed. Spatial retreat of shorelines varied greatly, with the maximum rate averaged over a span of 12 years exceeding 11 m year?-1? The results support further monitoring of shorelines in estuaries using active remote sensing and the potential for the methodology developed to identify erosional hotspots. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) We applied the Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) technique to study the city of Rome (Italy) aiming to detect and measure the surface movements of buildings and urban structures. The available SAR dataset has been delivered by ESA CAT1 3258 and ranges the period 1992-2005. In particular ERS1-ERS2 data processed covers 1995-2000, while Envisat ASAR 2002-2005. The Point Target velocity map shows a general stability except for some very local areas affected by subsidence rate larger than 10 mm/year. The analysis of the time series, compared to a detailed geological and geotechnical investigation of the lithostratigraphy of the alluvial sediments of the Tiber River, and combined with a temporal reconstruction of the expansion of the city over the alluvial valleys, allowed us to depict the main factors controlling the observed subsidence. These are: the in situ effective stress conditions, the related compressibility and viscous characteristics of the loaded soils, the thickness of the compressible stratum, the time since loading instant, and the entity of loading. Furthermore the observed subsidence is time-dependent, even at a long time-scale, with respect to the age of the buildings being most of the buildings constructed since the '50s still affected by slow subsidence. We mainly focused on the Grottaperfetta stream valley that is characterized by an anomalous high and time-lasting subsidence. Original data on the lithostratigraphic setting of this alluvial valley indicate that the high subsidence rate measured up to 2005 is caused by a still active primary consolidation process. [Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) Focused on the Okavango Delta, Botswana, this research investigates (a) whether ecosystem signals derived from remotely sensed imagery can be decomposed using a harmonic regression, (b) if the deviations from the decomposed signal are correlated with observed flooding and fire regimes, and (c) the impact of explicitly including agriculture, settlement areas, and land management systems on the derived signals. A time-series of 85 TM/ETM+ scenes spanning the period from 1989 through 2002 was used to decompose derived landscape dynamics into trends, annual and seasonal cycles, and long term oscillations. The harmonic fit largely defined by climatic periodicities (semi-annual, annual, and quasi-decadal) accounted for 63 percent to 88 percent of the variance in the trajectories. The trends were found to be robust whether or not urban settlement or landscape management regimes were explicitly included, though there was a reversal of trend in agricultural areas. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEMs) are at the core of most environmental process modelling and disaster management. In flood inundation modelling, surface elevation constitutes one of the most important model boundary conditions. With the availability of high-precision DEMs (e.g. LiDAR) and globally available DEMs (e.g. SRTM InSAR) a big step seems to have been taken in terms of hydraulic modelling application or hydraulic information retrieval from such DEMs, with high potential in particular for ungauged basins. Comparative studies exist that report on both the validation of different remotely sensed elevation sources and their use for both hydrologic and hydraulic studies. To contribute to the existing literature on DEMs and hydraulic information, this study aims at comparing water stages derived from LiDAR, topographic contours and SRTM. A flood inundation model calibrated with distributed ground-surveyed high water marks is used to evaluate the remotely sensed water stages. The results show that, as expected, LiDAR derived water stages exhibit the lowest RMSE (0.35 m), followed by the contour DEM (0.7 m). A relatively good performance of the SRTM (1.07 m), which is possibly linked to the low-lying floodplain, suggests that the SRTM is a valuable source for initial vital flood information extraction in large, homogeneous floodplains. Subsequent 3D flood mapping from remotely sensed water stages confirms this but also indicates that flood mapping with low-resolution, low-precision surface elevation data is hardly possible on the small scale, as the accuracy of the resulting map depends too much on DEM uncertainties and errors both in the horizontal and vertical directions. [Termes IGN] surveillance de l'urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) We have exploited the capability of the differential synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (DInSAR) technique, referred to as Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) approach, to analyse surface deformation at two distinct spatial scales: a low resolution, large scale, and a fine resolution, local scale. At the large scale, the technique investigates DInSAR data with a ground resolution of the order of 100 m*100 m and leads to generate mean deformation velocity maps and associated time series for areas extending to some thousands of square kilometres. At the local scale, the technique exploits the SAR images at full spatial resolution (typically of the order of 5 m*20 m), detecting and analysing localized deformation phenomena. The study is focused on the city of Rome, Italy, and we used the ERS-1/2 satellite radar data relevant to the 1995-2000 time period. The presented results demonstrate the capability of the SBAS approach to retrieve, from the low-resolution DInSAR data, large-scale deformation information leading to identify several sites affected by significant displacements. Our analysis permitted us to conclude that a major contribution to the detected displacements is due to the consolidation of the alluvial soils present in the area, mostly enforced by the buildings' overload. Furthermore, in a selected area, a detailed analysis was carried out by exploiting the full resolution DInSAR data. In this case we investigated deformation phenomena at the scale of single buildings. As key result we showed that differential displacements of few mm a-1, affecting single man-made structures or building complexes, could be detected, thus allowing to identify sites that may potentially be involved in critical situations.
