[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this chapter we discuss the nature of evaluation in the context of automated solutions to map generalisation and highlight the challenges of defining evaluation criteria. Considerable progress has been made in defining and incorporating evaluation criteria in systems that generalise maps over moderately small changes in scale. We seek to give an idealised view of how evaluation methodologies might be incorporated into generalisation systems. Examples are given that illus-trate these ideas. For larger changes in scale, it will be necessary to evolve these techniques, and incorporate evaluation techniques linked to pattern analysis and a more synoptic evaluation of the success of the design solution overall. The chapter highlights the challenges of developing and prioritising evaluation criteria, and where in the process they can be applied. Given the complexity of the task it is important to consider the role of the human in the evaluation process. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Many research works in map generalisation concern building and road themes. Several generalisation models, such as an agent-based generalisation model on which this paper focuses, have been designed and applied for these themes and give promising results. Our purpose is to take into account field themes, such as the relief and the land use cover. Many relationships exist between these themes and other objects and should be preserved during the generalisation process. The focus of this work is to design a hybrid generalisation system able to manage both discrete and continuous operations. Thus, we propose a model, called GAEL (for Generalisation based on Agents and ELasticity), which extends the existing agent-based model in order to make the triggering of continuous operations possible. The objects to deform are decomposed into small constrained objects and the points composing the geometry of these objects are modeled as agents. We apply this model to the deformation of fields. [Termes IGN] système multi-agentsRésumé : (Auteur) Automation of the generalisation process is one of the main research subjects of the COGIT laboratory. The automation of this process is a real challenge for a NMA that in the short term wishes to reduce costs and time taken to produce series mapping, and in the longer term wants to be able to deliver maps over the internet, providing generalisation on demand. Research in this area, undertaken at the COGIT laboratory has resulted in the1 award of nine PhDs and a further two that are ongoing. This chapter presents various results with a particular focus on two generalisation engines conceived at the COGIT laboratory and based on the Multi-Agent System paradigm. The first one is based on the concept of constraints, ideas of autonomy and levels of details. It models the micro- and meso-generalisation of roads and urban areas. This model has been reused during the Agent project and has been commercialised in the form of "Clarity" -a Laser-Scan product. The other engine is based on interactions between micro-agents and has been optimised for the generalisation of rural areas. This recent development has produced some promising results. Work is ongoing to develop linkages between the two models. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Generalisation aims at reducing the level of detail of a database in order to meet new specifications. A lot of work have dealt with automated generalisation for many years. Most of them concerned cartographic generalisation that aims at producing maps but this paper focuses on purely database (or model) generalisation. This paper addresses a specific and important problem of database generalisation, the generalisation of river network data. The paper emphasizes on the problem of selection: which stream is important enough to be part of the generalized dataset? River network selection has already been treated in the past by [12,9]. The solution presented here particularly employs the principle of "good continuation" to enrich the database with "river strokes". The second part of the paper presents a state of the art of river network generalisation. The third part explains the problems, the hypotheses and the pre-processes necessary for selection. The fourth part describes the generalisation process proposed to solve the problem. The fifth part presents the results obtained with this process on actual French datasets. Finally, this paper is concluded with leads for further research.
