[Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) Empirical models designed to simulate and predict urban land-use change in real situations are generally based on the utilization of statistical techniques to compute the land-use change probabilities. In contrast to these methods, artificial neural networks arise as an alternative to assess such probabilities by means of non-parametric approaches. This work introduces a simulation experiment on intra-urban land-use change in which a supervised back-propagation neural network has been employed in the parameterization of several biophysical and infrastructure variables considered in the simulation model. The spatial land-use transition probabilities estimated thereof feed a cellular automaton (CA) simulation model, based on stochastic transition rules. The model has been tested in a medium-sized town in the Midwest of Sao Paulo State, Piracicaba. A series of simulation outputs for the case study town in the period 1985-1999 were generated, and statistical validation tests were then conducted for the best results, based on fuzzy similarity measures. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this paper is to propose a new notion on prominent areas of a city defined by two types of comprehensive prominence for identifying urban spatial structure. Not only geometric attributes and topological attributes but also thematic attributes of irregular areas (e.g. districts of a city) are used to define these indices. In the paper, first the topological prominence related to geometric attributes such as size, location, and shape of areas is constructed by spatial weight matrix. Second, for finding comprehensive prominences, the principle axis factor model is adopted, and the first factor score is defined as the comprehensive prominence 1. Then, the proportion of thematic attributes of each area occupied in across the city is used to define the comprehensive prominence 2. Finally, we use these comprehensive prominences to extract some important regions in Matsudo City of Chiba Prefecture in Japan. The areas composing those regions show a high topological prominence, have a large population, have many offices, and are located around the train station. [Termes IGN] Rhénanie-Palatinat (Allemagne)Résumé : (Auteur) Management of megacities is a complex task which should be carried out on a sound basis of information. Decisions most often have to be taken in the dimensions of space and time. Availability of integrated spatial information services is thus important for policymakers, planners, and managers as well as for citizens and their organizations, irrespective of where they are in the world. The strategy followed by the INSPIRE (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community) initiative is a valuable information source for the development of principles and procedures in spatial information management, particularly environmental management. The work done within INSPIRE can also be used to develop specifically adapted solutions for the spatial and environmental information management of urban agglomerations, the megacities. This paper describes a good practice example of a German regional SDI—the approach implemented by Rhineland-Palatinate. The web-based implementation of this regional SDI supports the aim of the INSPIRE directive, namely, improving the usability of spatial data compiled by different authorities. The outlined procedures help to clarify which kind of information has to be provided in which format so that it enhances the understanding of the complex interactions between human activities and their environmental impacts, which are crucial particularly in megacities. The solution presented in this paper, therefore, can be seen as a prototype of a practical realization of a feasible SDI, which can be generalized to larger urban areas.
