[Termes IGN] Vegetation Health IndexRésumé : (Auteur) The continuous increase of heavy metal ions in the environment is imposing serious problems in agricultural yield and increases human health threats through accumulation in the food chain. Various studies have shown that heavy metals influence the metabolic processes and pigment concentrations in leaves, and thus affect the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra. Leaf level in vivo LIF spectra using the 488 nm and 355 nm laser lines, fluorescence induction kinetics (FIK) using the 488 nm laser line, and photosynthetic pigments of the control and nickel treated wheat seedlings were measured. The peak parameters of the blue and UV-excited spectral bands were calculated by Gaussian curve fitting. The FIK measured at both the chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence bands was used to evaluate the fluorescence decrease ratio (R Fd). The variations in RFd and fluorescence ratios of intensities, bandwidth and band area, with varying concentrations of nickel, were revealed as promising parameters in determining the health status of wheat seedlings. These leaf level findings can be extended at canopy level in the field using laser based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry to the retrieval of geophysical parameters from yegetated scenes is based on simple direct models of such scenes. The first part of this paper presents an analysis of the correspon-dence between these simple models, namely, the random volume over ground and the oriented volume over ground (OVoG), and experimental data from samples of two agricultural crops (maize and rice) acquired in controlled conditions. Although an overall agreement between model and data is clear, some discrepancies have been found as a consequence of two assumptions in the model formulation: vertical homogeneity of the vegetation volume and absence of multiple scattering effects inside the volume. This paper presents the shape and location of the visible region of the experimental coherences on the complex plane and compares it with the feasible region predicted by the model. This comparison has also pointed out the low sensitivity of the direct model to extinction coefficients. In the second part, two different strategies for a complete inversion (i.e., estimation of all model parameters) of the OVoG model are proposed and compared, using the same data set. The first one is based on a combination of geometrical and numerical approaches (genetic algorithms) and the second one on a dual-baseline configuration. In all cases, ground topography is accurately estimated, with a maximum error of 10 cm. Vegetation height estimates are accurate up to 30 cm, with some bands and baseline configurations providing errors below 15 cm. However, results obtained for the extinction coefficients are not stable with frequency and exhibit high variability. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In 1999, the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) of China launched the National Land Use Change Program especially to monitor the scale and distribution of urban expansion and the decrease in cultivated land through remote sensing technology. This Program has been carried out annually and continuously for seven years since then and played an important role in the policy-making of MLR about land management and planning. This paper gives an overview about this Program and discusses several research issues. First, the remote sensing data sources and other ancillary data used in this Program are presented. The approaches for image preprocessing, i.e. radiometric normalization, image geometric rectification and image fusion are then introduced with an emphasis on the algorithm development for image registration. Second, land use change detection technique is the most critical and complex aspect of the Program. The methodologies for change detection using either bi-temporal image pair or one existing land use map and one remotely sensed image are detailed. Third, since the data of land use changes derived from remote sensing will be operationally used for local and central government, field validation and accuracy assessment are crucial to ensure the reliability of change detection results. The strategy of field work and the resulting accuracy evaluations is presented. The land use and change information derived from remotely sensed data has wide applications for land management, including land use database updating, verification of land use planning and monitoring of national high-tech parks. Last, suggestions on how to make full use of the images and change detection result, to improve the consistency of land use classification and to develop change detection algorithms for diverse and complex remote sensing data are given. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Using Landsat TM data from 1995 and 2000, changes in the landscape erosion pattern of the Yellow River Basin, China were analysed. The aim was to improve our understanding of soil-erosion change so that sustainable land use could be established. First, a soil-erosion intensity index model was developed to study soil-erosion intensity change in the study area. Over the 5 years, the areas of weak erosion, moderate erosion, severe erosion, and very severe erosion all increased. The area of weak erosion increased dramatically by 7.94*105 ha, and areas of slight erosion and acute erosion decreased by 1.93*106 ha and 4.50*104 ha, respectively. The results show that while the intensity of soil erosion has gradually been decreasing as a whole, in some regions the soil erosion is becoming more severe. Based on landscape indices, the pattern of changes in soil erosion over the past 5 years was analysed. The changes in landscape pattern of soil erosion resulted from human activities. Analysis showed that human impact increases fragmentation, having three major effects on landscape pattern, reduction in patch area, variations in patch shape, and changes in spatial pattern. In the study area, population growth, farming, governmental policy and forest degradation are the major factors causing soil erosion change over a 5-year period.
