[Termes IGN] transformationRésumé : (auteur) The interaction of three variables—territory, cartography, and terrain—can account for landscape transformation processes at Naharayim/el Baqura, in the Jordan Valley, over the last century and a half. This interface is examined across three historical periods marking the passage from nomadism to sedentism: The Ottoman Period (1858–1917), the British Mandate (1918–1948), and the statehood period (1948–1994). Adopting a hybridized and interdisciplinary approach at the juncture of history, landscape architecture, and geopolitics, this work performs an in-depth analysis of the three variables in each period and examines their relationship to power. The analysis emphasizes territorial concepts and border-making, mapping practices, land survey techniques, infrastructure, agricultural development, and water regimes. It will be shown that mapping has been a medium of politics, with landscapes often being subjugated to political or territorial ambitions. Data is gathered from primary sources, including some previously unknown from the periods in question, fieldwork, interviews, a point cloud data set from both banks of the Jordan River, as well as contemporary social scientific scholarship. It is argued that landscape is neither a natural feature nor a man-made system of engineered spaces, but rather the outcome of a dynamic interaction between natural landscape, human imagination, and various iterations of power, be they natural, theological, technological, political, or military. It is this dynamic interaction across space and time that this work attempts to map. Note de contenu : 1. Domesticated Landscape: Ottoman Imperial Period (1858–1917)

[Termes IGN] Toscane (Italie)Résumé : (auteur) A recent study has proposed and tested a semi-empirical method to estimate crop irrigation based on a water balance logic and Sentinel-2 Multi Spectral Instrument (MSI) NDVI imagery. The current paper aims at extending the same approach to the analysis of the main irrigation patterns occurred in Tuscany (Central Italy) during the 2000–2019 period. This operation was made possible by feeding the irrigation water (IW) estimation method with 250-m spatial resolution Terra/Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI images. The results of this operation were first assessed versus various reference datasets available for the region; next, the annual maps of IW estimated for the 20 study years were analyzed at province scale in conjunction with relevant agricultural statistics. The use of MODIS in place of MSI images reduces the IW estimation accuracy irregularly at local scale, depending on the size and spatial arrangement of irrigated and non-irrigated fields; the reduction in accuracy is, however, marginal over relatively large areas. Irrigated crops are decreasing throughout most Tuscany provinces, while they are increasing in the most southern and driest province. The possible reasons and implications of these findings are finally discussed in relation to the main environmental issues affecting the region. The aim of this study is to provide an efficient index using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to detect water spread areas from satellite images with similar performance in different regions. This index is introduced for images containing water absorption bands from visible to middle infrared wavelengths. Eleven images were prepared from different satellites and water bodies with various environmental conditions. In addition, 40 pixels from water and 40 pixels from non-water regions were selected as training data for PSO algorithm. Results were evaluated using digitized polygons of water bodies on high-resolution images of Google Earth. The best results in PSO-based water index (PSOWI) were obtained by the combination of two bands (red and middle infrared). PSOWI represented proper performance in the selected various land covers and satellite images. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) While annual crop rotations play a crucial role for agricultural optimization, they have been largely ignored for automated crop type mapping. In this paper, we take advantage of the increasing quantity of annotated satellite data to propose to model simultaneously the inter- and intra-annual agricultural dynamics of yearly parcel classification with a deep learning approach. Along with simple training adjustments, our model provides an improvement of over 6.3% mIoU over the current state-of-the-art of crop classification, and a reduction of over 21% of the error rate. Furthermore, we release the first large-scale multi-year agricultural dataset with over 300,000 annotated parcels.
