This approach takes into consideration only characteristic pixels, not all pixels of the image, to represent and characterize textural features. Due to the fact that increasing the spatial resolution of satellite sensors leads to the lack of stationarity hypothesis in the acquired images, such an approach becomes relevant since only the interaction and characteristics of keypoints are exploited. Moreover, as this technique does not need to consider all pixels inside the image like classical dense approaches, it is more capable to deal with large-size image data offered by VHR remote sensing acquisition systems. In this work, our pointwise strategy is performed by exploiting the local maximum and local minimum pixels (in terms of intensity) extracted from the image. It is integrated into several texture analysis frameworks with the help of different techniques and methods such as the graph theory, the covariance-based approach, the geometric distance measurement, etc. As a result, a variety of texture-based applications using remote sensing data (both VHR optical and radar images) are tackled such as image retrieval, segmentation, classification, and change detection, etc. By performing dedicated experiments to each thematic application, the effectiveness and relevance of the proposed approach are confirmed and validated. [Termes IGN] UkraineRésumé : (auteur) Global, timely, accurate and cost-effective cropland mapping is a prerequisite for reliable crop condition monitoring. This article presented a simple and comprehensive methodology capable to meet the requirements of operational cropland mapping by proposing (1) five knowledge-based temporal features that remain stable over time, (2) a cleaning method that discards misleading pixels from a baseline land cover map and (3) a classifier that delivers high accuracy cropland maps (>>80%). This was demonstrated over four contrasted agrosystems in Argentina, Belgium, China and Ukraine. It was found that the quality and accuracy of the baseline impact more the certainty of the classification rather than the classification output itself. In addition, it was shown that interpolation of the knowledge-based features increases the stability of the classifier allowing for its re-use from year to year without recalibration. Hence, the method shows potential for application at larger scale as well as for delivering cropland map in near real time. [Termes IGN] viticultureRésumé : (auteur) Physiological measurements are considered to be the most accurate way of assessing plant water status, but they might also be time-consuming, costly and intrusive. Since visible (VIS)-to-shortwave infrared (SWIR) imaging spectrometers are able to monitor various bio-chemical alterations in the leaf, such narrow-band instruments may offer a faster, less expensive and non-destructive alternative. This requires an intelligent downsizing of broad and noisy hyperspectra into the few most physiologically-sensitive wavelengths. In the current study, hyperspectral signatures of water-stressed grapevine leaves (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) were correlated to values of midday leaf water potential (Ψl), stomatal conductance (gs) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) under controlled conditions, using the partial least squares-regression (PLS-R) technique. It was found that opposite reflectance trends at 530–550 nm and around 1500 nm – associated with independent changes in photoprotective pigment contents and water availability, respectively – were indicative of stress-induced alterations in Ψl, gs and NPQ. Furthermore, combining the spectral responses at these VIS and SWIR regions yielded three normalized water balance indices (WABIs), which were superior to various widely-used reflectance models in predicting physiological values at both the leaf and canopy levels. The potential of the novel WABI formulations also under field conditions demonstrates their applicability for water status monitoring and irrigation scheduling.
