The changes of JERS1 backscatter and ERS1/2 tandem coherence between images are consistent over the area studied, in contrast to ERS1/2 backscatter. A modelbased regression analysis has been performed, and the use of the model for inversion is discussed and compared with other approaches found in the literature. The model parameters are discussed in terms of their relation to wind speed and temperature. Results from the different acquisitions are combined to improve the stem volume estimation. The accuracy in terms of rms error (RMSE) for standwise estimated stem volume is 310 m/ha using ERS1/2 coherence. Using backscatter and coherence from JERS1 we obtain an RMSE of 33035 m/ha. Finally, conditions for accurate retrieval of stem volume using multitemporal InSAR observations are discussed. We conclude that G and Lband repeatpass InSAR can provide stem volume estimates in boreal forests with accuracies similar to those of standard in situ measurements. [Termes IGN] image Landsat-TMRésumé : (Auteur) Deforestation and colonization in Amazonia have attracted substantial attention. This article focuses on an area of 3,000 km within the Brazilian State of Rondonia. Two adjacent settlements were compared to assess the role of their different designs in landscape change. Anari was planned following an orthogonal road network. Machadinho was designed with attention to topography in laying out roads and farm properties, while including communal reserves. Field research was undertaken in conjunction with multi-temporal classifications of remotely sensed data (1988, 1994, and 1998) and landscape ecology methods. The results indicate that large patches of communal reserves play an important role in maintaining lower levels of fragmentation. Analyses of landscape structure confirmed that forest patches in Machadinho are less fragmented, more complex, and preserve more interior habitat. By comparing the effects of different settlement designs on landscape change and forest fragmentation, this article contributes to the debate about colonization strategies in Amazonia. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article considers two types of tools used for the analysis of spatial data: computational tools for grid data and visualizationbased interactive exploratory techniques. The main purpose is to demonstrate that computational and visual techniques are complementary, and their combined use in data analysis may produce a synergistic effect. To this end, we describe two example scenarios of data analysis in the evaluation of potential damage from earthquakes and in analysis of forest resources. The analyses were performed with the use of CommonGIS, featuring the availability of powerful geocomputational tools and interactive visualizationrelated facilities that can be efficiently used in combination in a desktop environment or via the World Wide Web. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The identification and classification of mountain pine beetle, Dentroctonus ponderos (Hopkins), red-attack damage patterns in a mature lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forest located in the Forst St-James forest Distric, British Columbia, was accomplished using 1999 Landsat TM satellite imagery, 1999 mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey point data, and GIS forest inventory data. Unrelated variance in the observed spectral response at mountain pine beetle field and aerial survey points was reduced following image stratification with the GIS forest inventory data and removal of other factors uncharacteristic of red-attack damage. Locations of known mountain pine beetle infestation were used to train a maximum-likelihood algorithm ; overall classification accuracy was 73 percent, based on an assessment of 360 independent validation points. If local stand variability is reduced prior to signature generation, accuracies and mao products can be useful for those involved in active forest management decision making regarding mountain pine beetle infestations.
