[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Iowa is the leading agricultural state in the USA. Increasing suburban and rural development as well as industrial and commercial growth threaten Iowa's unique farmlands and cause their rapid conversion into other land uses. Thus, detecting spatial patterns of cropland loss and predicting future loss are important issues for better agricultural planning and management. This study provides a unique approach for monitoring and modeling cropland loss in Iowa, focusing on differences between rapidly growing urban counties and rural depopulating counties. The monitoring of farmland loss is based on classified 1984, 1992, and 2000 two-season Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) satellite imagery. The modeling approach used joint cellular automata - Markov simulation procedures to predict cropland loss for 2008 and 2016. Mapping of cropland dynamics, using remotely sensed data in urban and rural counties between 1984 and 2000, revealed that there was a significant decline of croplands in Iowa. The simulation of land cover changes for 2008 and 2016 showed continuing decline of croplands in both urban and rural counties. The results of the study can be used by local planners and managers for the development and application of sustainable agriculture practices in Iowa. [Termes IGN] Sousson (rivière)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a land cover classification methodology in agricultural contexts that provides satisfactory results with a single satellite image per year acquired during the growing period. Our approach incorporates ancillary data such as cropping history (inter-annual crop rotations), context (altitude, soil type) and structure (parcels size and shape) to compensate for the lack of radiometric data resulting from the use of a single image. The originality of the proposed method resides in the three successive steps used: S1: per-pixel classification of a single SPOT XS image with a restricted number of land cover classes (RL) chosen to ensure good accuracy; S2: conversion of RLs into a per-parcel classification system using ancillary parcel boundaries: and S3: parcel allocation using exhaustive land cover classes (EL) and its refinement through the application of decision rules. The method was tested on a 120 km2 area (Sousson river basin, Gers, France) where exhaustive knowledge of land cover for two successive years allowed complete validation of our method. It allocated 87% of the parcels with a 75% accuracy rate according to the exhaustive list (EL). This is a satisfactory result obtained with one SPOT XS image in a small agricultural parcel context. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) The input roughness parameters for electromagnetic backscattering modelling need to be accurate to estimate radar measurements correctly over bare soils, particularly in agricultural environments. This paper propose to evaluate the roughness description in terms of several characterisations through a correlation function using a numerical backscattering model. The experimental database used in this study is based on ASAR-ENVISAT experimental campaigns in the Beauce region (France). Two presentations of the surface height correlation function are proposed in this study. The first one, referred to as the "Ïfunction" fits the experimental correlation functions up to the correlation length, while the second one, the "(a,b) function" fits the correlation function for scales corresponding to positive values. A relationship is proposed between the rms height of soil surface and the shape of the correlation function. Using Ïfunction, comparisons between radar measurements for high incidence angles and simulations based on the numerical backscattering model (moment method) show a good agreement for soil surfaces with an rms height smaller than 2 cm with medium and high soil moisture. [Termes IGN] variableRésumé : (Auteur) Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is the result of the complex interactions between behavioural and structural factors (drivers) associated with the demand, technological capacity, social relations and the nature of the environment in question. Although no general theory of land use change exists, different disciplinary theories can help us to analyse aspects of LUCC in specific situations. However, paradigms and theories applied by the different disciplines are often difficult to integrate and their specific research results do not easily combine into an integrated understanding of LUCC. Geographical approaches often aim to identify the location of LUCC in a spatially explicit way, while socio-economic studies aim to understand the processes of LUCC, but often lack spatial context and interactions. The objective of this study is to integrate process information from a socioeconomic study into a geographical approach. First, a logistic regression analysis is performed on household survey data from interviews. In this approach the occurrence of the land use types corn, wet rice and banana is explained by a set of variables that are hypothesised to be explanatory for those land use types, with fields as the unit of analysis. The independent variables consist of household characteristics, like ethnicity and age, and plot and field information, like tenure, slope and travel time. The results of these analyses are used to identify key variables explaining land use choice, which subsequently are also collected at watershed level, using maps, census data and remote sensing imagery. Logistic regression analysis of this spatial dataset, where a ten percent sample of a 50 by 50 m grid was analysed, shows that the key variables identified in the household analysis are also important at the watershed level. Important drivers in the study area are, among others, slope, ethnicity, accessibility and place of birth. The differences in the contribution of the variables to the models at household and watershed level can be attributed to differences in spatial extent and data representation. Comparing the model with a mainstream geographical approach indicates that the spatial model informed by the household analysis gives a better insight in the actual processes determining land use than the mainstream geographic approach.
