[Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) Motivated by the needs of a scalable out-of-core surface reconstruction algorithm available on the cloud, this paper addresses the computation of distributed Delaunay triangulations of massive point sets. The proposed algorithm takes as input a point cloud and first partitions it across multiple processing elements into tiles of relatively homogeneous point sizes. The distributed computation and communication between processing
elements is orchestrated so that each one discovers the Delaunay neighbors of its input points within the theoretical overall Delaunay triangulation of all points and computes locally a partial view of this triangulation. This approach prevents memory limitations
by never materializing the global triangulation. This efficiency is due to our proposed uncentralized model to represent, manage and locally construct the triangulation corresponding to each tile. The point set is first partitioned into non-overlapping tiles, then we construct within each tile the Delaunay triangulation of the local points and a minimal set of replicated foreign points in order to capture the simplices spanning multiple tiles. Inspired by the star splaying approach for Delaunay triangulation computation/repair, communication is limited to exchanging points of potential Delaunay neighbors across tiles. Therefore, our method is guaranteed to reconstruct, within each tile, a triangulation that contains the star of its local points, as though it were computed within the Delaunay triangulation of all points. The proposed algorithm is implemented with Spark for the scheduling and C++ for the geometric computations. This allows both an optimal scheduling on multiple machines and efficient low-level computation. The results show the efficiency of our algorithm in terms of speedup and strong scaling on a classical Spark configuration with both synthetic and real use case
datasets.

[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationMots-clés libres : 3D Movement and Interaction Recorder (3DmoveR) Résumé : (auteur) Various widely available applications such as Google Earth have made interactive 3D visualizations of spatial data popular. While several studies have focused on how users perform when interacting with these with 3D visualizations, it has not been common to record their virtual movements in 3D environments or interactions with 3D maps. We therefore created and tested a new web-based research tool: a 3D Movement and Interaction Recorder (3DmoveR). Its design incorporates findings from the latest 3D visualization research, and is built upon an iterative requirements analysis. It is implemented using open web technologies such as PHP, JavaScript, and the X3DOM library. The main goal of the tool is to record camera position and orientation during a user’s movement within a virtual 3D scene, together with other aspects of their interaction. After building the tool, we performed an experiment to demonstrate its capabilities. This experiment revealed differences between laypersons and experts (cartographers) when working with interactive 3D maps. For example, experts achieved higher numbers of correct answers in some tasks, had shorter response times, followed shorter virtual trajectories, and moved through the environment more smoothly. Interaction-based clustering as well as other ways of visualizing and qualitatively analyzing user interaction were explored. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) Many scholars have demonstrated growing interest in GIScience in recent years, including use of open data portals, shared code and options for open access publication. These practices have made both research and data more transparent and accessible for a broad audience. This research may be open only in a limited sense for populations without expertise in the technology and methods undergirding these data. Based on two case studies using RStudio’s Shiny web platform, we argue that a process-based approach focusing on how analysis is opened throughout the research process provides a supplementary way to define and reflect upon public facing geographic research. Reflecting upon decisions we made at key points in each case study project, we identify four key tensions inherent to work in open GIScience: standardized vs. flexible tools, expert vs. community-led design, single vs. multiple audiences and established vs. emerging metrics. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) SensePlace3 (SP3) is a geovisual analytics framework and web application that supports overview + detail analysis of social media, focusing on extracting meaningful information from the Twitterverse. SP3 leverages social media related to crisis events. It differs from most existing systems by enabling an analyst to obtain place-relevant information from tweets that have implicit as well as explicit geography. Specifically, SP3 includes not just the ability to utilize the explicit geography of geolocated tweets but also analyze implicit geography by recognizing and geolocating references in both tweet text, which indicates locations tweeted about, and in Twitter profiles, which indicates locations affiliated with users. Key features of SP3 reported here include flexible search and filtering capabilities to support information foraging; an ingest, processing, and indexing pipeline that produces near real-time access for big streaming data; and a novel strategy for implementing a web-based multi-view visual interface with dynamic linking of entities across views. The SP3 system architecture was designed to support crisis management applications, but its design flexibility makes it easily adaptable to other domains. We also report on a user study that provided input to SP3 interface design and suggests next steps for effective spatiotemporal analytics using social media sources.
